Chapter 34: The Eruption

The volcano erupted violently as it spat out waves of lava and armies of magma.

"Incoming!" Moana screamed to warn that a ball of burning magma was about to strike them and turn them into a roast chicken, pork chop, steamed hawk, and human meat.

Maui quickly banked left to dodge the incoming burning magma.

"Nice one, Maui!" Moana said as she let out a sigh of relief.

Maui screeched in panic.

"Don't panic!" Moana warned.

"Does it seem like I shouldn't panic?!" Maui was freaking out. "This is worse than Te Kā!"

"There will be better times just dodge all these magma!" Moana screamed as she watched all the magma being spewed out, and flood of lava covering the majority of the land.

"If you haven't known, volcano eruptions can last for hours! You expect me to fly away from all of these for hours?!" Maui screamed back.

"Well, get us out of here as far from possible!" Moana screamed. "Ahh!" She yelped as she looked below.

"What?! What?!" Maui responded.

"People down there! They need help!" Moana screamed. Then she realized this whole scenery was predicted by the painting inside the cave she was in. She was already too far away that she was not able to see how many people were already killed by the volcano. However, she was able to see someone at the base of the volcano, alive, standing tall...

...

.....

....... it was Nana.

She was standing tall and proud with her arms spread out as she faced the volcano. She was not able to hear her, but Nana was laughing maniacally. "HAHAHAA! THIS ISLAND WILL SOON BE MINE!" She said as the lava ran beneath her feet. She did not seem to get hurt at all.

Moana's eyes widened as she saw the lave running down Nana's feet before the black cloud covered her. She also saw black clouds of volcanic ash that swallowed everyone running away from it, no matter how much they tried to run away as quickly as possible. Moana was so shocked that she couldn't even scream. She froze on top of Maui's back as her eyes lost focus.

"Moana! You need to tell me if the magma is falling down on us!" Maui screamed but his voice didn't go through Moana's ears.

Luckily, Pua squealed loud enough that Maui was able to dodge... just the part of it.

The burning lava and sturdy rock struck Maui's right wing. As he couldn't use his right wing properly, he tilted to his right and Moana fell right from it. Maui, noticed that Moana fell of his back, thrusted through the air to retrieve Moana. He noticed that her eyes lost focus. She's in shock, he thought as he read her eyes.

He was able to have Moana land back on his back again and quickly landed on their boat. He turned back into a human to quickly escape the clouds of volcanic ash. Since his right arm was injured, he was not able to do it as fast as he used to. However, he managed to get out of the radius of the dark clouds.

When he felt that they were safe enough, he stopped and tried to wake Moana up. "Princess! Kid! Moana! Wake up!" Maui said as he shook Moana gently. Then he softly slapped her in a face. However, her focus did not come back. Then he splashed water on her face.

"Huh?! Huh..." Moana's focus on her eyes came back.

"You okay kid?" Maui asked.

"I guess so..." Moana said.

"I'm not," Maui winced as the burning pain came back to his right arm.

"Oh, that looks awful," Moana said.

"I don't think I can use this arm for a while," Maui said.

"Here," Moana quickly dived into the storage to get the bottle of ointment. She applied it on Maui gently and beautifully wrapped his wound with the bandage. "There you go. Now why don't you rest a little bit?"

"Yeah, I can't move arms with this burn," Maui said.

"Then let me take care of this," Moana said.

"Moana, you just fainted earlier," Maui said. "How do you expect yourself to do this by yourself?"

"You stay on this piece of island," Moana said as she pointed at the small piece of land next to their boat.

"Kid? What are you thinking?" Maui asked.

"You can't move at all?" Moana asked, avoiding his question.

"Yeah, pretty much, but what are you thinking?" Maui answered and asked once more as he stepped into the land with Pua and Heihei in his left arm.

"See you later, Maui," Moana said as she took off.

"Wha-what?? Moana! Come back!" Maui desperately screamed to bring her back, but she did not look back. Maui wanted to transform her and chase after her, but his right arm was killing him.

You suffered enough because of me, Maui, Moana thought as if she was saying it to Maui. I am not going to make you do everything for me. I need to accomplish something by myself. I have to be strong, both physically and mentally. I cannot just rely on others all the time. This is the moment when I can prove that I can be responsible for what's right!

Moana approached to the island. The black clouds of volcanic ash started to turn gray, then white, then clearer. Stay focused, Moana. Yes, there are traumatizing things but it should never stop me from saving this world.

As she approached closer to the main island, clouds of volcanic ash started to die down. Nana must have done something, Moana thought. Volcano eruption would affect the area around for days, weeks, maybe months. But the cloud of volcanic ash ran less than an hour.

Thankfully, Moana was able to see clearly around as the fog of volcanic ash cleared out. Let's pack this just in case... Moana said as she tied the oar behind her back so that she can use it as a self-defense in case she needs to protect herself.

Initially, she was satisfied with the clear view. However, she was disgusted by the corpses of the victims of the volcanoes. (Imagine Pompeii victims). The sight was absolutely atrocious. Everyone has been turned into gray statues. From adults to children. Moana held back her tears as she turned her eyes away from them. She kept looking at the ground when she was walking towards the volcano to confront with Nana.

Suddenly, she heard someone walking. There are survivors?! Moana thought excitedly as she turned to the direction where she heard the walking. But she gasped by the sight. The corpses' eyes lit up red and started to walk towards the volcano.

Creepy... Moana thought. But that was the only thing she was able to think. Her brain started to be adjusted to violent sights. When she realized that the walking dead was not trying to attack her or do anything with her, she decided to let every corpses to lead the way as she started to walk after them. Maybe they'll lead the way, Moana thought as she continued to walk behind them. After walking for few more moments, they all stopped walking. Moana was able to see the base of the volcano with Nana standing tall and proud...

...

.....

.......with a monster she's supposed to capture standing right beside her.

"Bow down to me, peasants!" Nana ordered. Everyone bowed down to her. "That's right! That's what you get for never listening to my orders! If you listened to me, my mother would not have died. I just asked for a simple favor of ginseng and none of you. NONE OF YOU! Volunteered to get it for her. Since you took away her life, I will take away yours. You all deserve this. And don't worry. Father does not have to know anything about this. Sacrifice is part of my life now. It was worth sacrificing corrupt one to return my favor."

"Why is she saying all this? Do these corpses understand what she is saying right now?" Moana asked herself under her breath.

"Now, as a leader of Maui island, I demand you to start taking my orders from now!" Nana screamed. Everyone put their hand over their heart as they kneeled with one knee. "Now, first order of business! Capture Moana and bring her to me!" Nana ordered.

Everyone turned to Moana and chased after her. Moana started to run away from them as fast as her feet ran. Only place she was able to think about was ocean. One small corpse leaped forward and grabbed her by the ankle, causing her to trip and fall. She groaned as she struggled against the corpse. She took out the oar from her back and smacked the corpse in the head. The whole body shattered into pieces. "Pretty fragile..." Moana said to herself. "It should make my job easier." She rose up continued to sprint towards the ocean. However, her chest was nearly killing her as her lungs started to run out of oxygen. She even felt a little cramp building up in her left calf. But she did not give up. She was so eager to get this done by herself.

She did not have time to look down while she was running, so she tripped over the branch and rolled over almost eight times. Moana groaned as she struggled to get up. She ached all over her back, arms, and legs. The molten zombies were much slower than her that they were now much far away from her. However, Moana knew that she should not let her guards down. She made sure her oar was in a right condition, shook off sand off the wounds on her legs and arms, and continued to run forward.

Her wounds were killing her. When she tried to run faster, the wounds were stabbing on her tissues and muscles, preventing her from doing so. "Please! Come on!" Moana started to be irritated by her wounds.

Eventually, she tired herself out. She couldn't run anymore. She collapsed as her right cheek, her chest, her stomach, and her knees were buried inside the bed of sand. "Just few more... then it's a beach..." Moana tried to get up but her knees would not let her stand. She coughed painfully, and she seemed as if she tasted blood from her throat. She smacked her lips to make sure she was not actually bleeding from her throat. Nope. Just the taste. She was still freaking out because she never tasted blood in her mouth before except when her baby teeth fell out.

She heard footsteps coming near. It did not seem like the walking corpses. It was human's foot. Moana immediately knew who it was. "You know, you should've just left when you had the chance," Nana's taunting voice triggered her anger. Moana kept still because she knew if she tried to fight she would lose. She had to be smart about it. But she couldn't move. She was too exhausted to move... to think... to say awake...

Meanwhile, Maui was trying to treat his wound. He sloppily rubbed ointment all around his burn, and poorly wrapped a bandage around the burn. He transformed into a beetle to fly over because he knew that giant hawk would be troublesome. Surely, it was better than he expected. Out of his six wings, only one was unbearable. "You guys stay here, all right? Pugley? You're in charge," Maui said to Pua and Heihei.

Pua nodded as he understood. Heihei kept pecking on the sail pole.

Maui gently flew over to the island to find Moana. He knew she would be in great danger if he did not go to help. Don't worry, kid. I'm on my way. Please... stay safe...

Moana's arms were tied in the cave. Nana snickered evilly in front of her. "It's so fun watching other chiefs suffer while I show them how much I have control over my citizens. Even though it's my first time."

"What do you... want... from me...?" Moana asked weakly yet angrily.

"Oh nothing sweetie, really, nothing," Nana said. "I finally have control over my citizens, and I don't feel like having others ruin my success. Don't worry. I won't kill you."

"Turn them into zombies and force them to treat you like god? That won't work," Moana said, almost grinding her teeth in fury.

"Oh it will, honey, you just wait," Nana replied with an evil smirk.
