Chapter 3: Reunion

Early in the morning, Moana woke to prepare for her morning routines, which included harvesting, fishing, and sometimes, hunting for breakfast. Along with her, a lot of village folks started the morning routine with her. As usual, they picked coconuts, collected the water, saved the fiber, and used the leaves to lit the fire. For breakfast, she collected bags of grain and gathered some fish to go with the bowl of grain.

"Mmm," Moana savored the taste of her breakfast, "I just love it when the grain is cooked not so soft and watery. This fish really goes well with this grain!"

"You seem happier than yesterday," Sina watched Moana talk to herself while she ate.

"Did something good happen yesterday night?" Tui was also glad to see Moana being in a brighter mood again.

Moana looked at her mother and said, "Wasn't I always happy?" Then she turned to her dad and said, "and no, nothing special happened yesterday. Just like any ordinary days." All those tears that Moana let out made her feel much better. Moana didn't want to mention anything about her tears or Maui. About her crying, she would make her parents worried even more. About Maui, it would be weird to tell them that she has a crush on a demigod whom many people think he is just a legend. Even if he was real, it would still be weird if a mortal and an immortal went into a certain relationship. She put her empty bowl down and stood up. "Well, I gotta go check on the farms and bushes. See you later!" She grabbed the farming stick and rushed out cheerfully.

Out on the farm, she hummed as she checked the conditions of the vegetables, dug some holes to plant more vegetables, and picked some berries. She was all alone in the farm as other people went out to pick more coconuts, fish out to the sea, and hunt in the deep forest. All of the sudden, she let out a deep sigh. "Oh, I really want to see him. I wish that he was here right next to me, helping me with picking berries."

"If you want, I'll really help you!" She heard a familiar voice.

She looked around to see where the voice came from. "Where did that voice come from? It sounds so familiar."

"Behind the bushes, kid," the voice replied.

Moana walked over and peeked into the bush, and out popped Maui!

Moana needed a moment to think, then she finally spoke up. "Oh my goodness! Maui! Is that really you?" Moana couldn't believe her eyes.

"Yes it is." Then he turned the other way and scratched his head because he suddenly became a little shy to face her. "My, why is your island so hard to find?" He doesn't know why he lied. He didn't know what to say. "I was flying all over the sea to find this island and now I finally... finally..." Maui peeked over because Moana was unexpectedly quiet. She had her hands over her mouth and tears were pouring out from her eyes. "... found this island."

"Oh, Maui," she blubbered. Before Maui said another word, she wrapped her arms around Maui.

"Ah, kid. I know, I know. I missed you too." Maui patted her back.

"Why didn't you... come earlier? I really... missed you..." Moana sobbed in his shoulder.

"I'm sorry, kid. But I'm here now. There you go, deep breath," Maui said as he continued to pat her back to make her feel better.

Moana hugged him until she calmed down and decided that she hugged him enough. "Glad to see you, Maui."

"Same here, princess." Maui teasingly winked when Moana looked up to him when he said 'princess'.

"I told you I'm not a princess. I don't care if I'm wearing a dress and if I have an animal sidekick. I am a-"

"-daughter of village chief." Maui finished the sentence for her.

"Well, I am a chief now," Moana informed.

"Wow, kid, you grown so much while I was gone," Maui said, impressed.

"Wait a minute..." Moana said. Maui must've heard how much she missed her. "You heard..."

"Yeah, I heard how much you missed me," Maui said. Moana blushed by embarrassment. "But the truth is..." Maui continued as he scratched his head since he was as much as embarrassed as Moana. "I missed you that much too. You don't need to be embarrassed." That made Moana feel better.

"So help me with picking berries?" Moana asked.

"Sure, I'll help you," Maui kindly took the offer.

"Thank you," she thanked him.

"What can I say except, you're welcome?" Maui said in a singsong voice.

Moana snickered. "Believed it or not, I knew you were gonna say that." Moana handed him one of the baskets so that Maui can fill it up. After few moments, Moana decided to check on him. "How are you doing over there?"

"Hmm, these berries are delicious!" Maui said as he swallowed his mouthful.

"Don't eat them all," Moana warned as she continued to pick them.

"Don't worry, I won't." After stuffing his face with few more, he put the rest of the berries he picked in the basket. "So, chief of Motunui, is farming all you do when you're not out to the sea?"

"I do hunt, make some tools, pick some coconuts, and do other things to make our lifestyle better." Soon, Moana's basket was filled with berries. "Are you done?"

"Oh yes," he handed the basket to her and said, "what can I say-"

"-except you're welcome?" Moana and Maui finished his sentence.

The sun was up high. Every citizens of Motunui can tell that it's noon when the sun is that high. "Hmm. It looks like it's lunch time. You want anything?" Moana asked Maui.

"No thanks, I'm really not hungry at this moment since I woke up late." But then his stomach growled. Mini Maui crossed his arms and shook his head.

Moana snickered. "We have plenty of fish you can eat."

"That sounds nice," Maui said.

"Only if you'd help me take these baskets back home," Moana pleaded.

"You're so clever in a lot of ways." Maui carried both baskets with each of his hands and walked with Moana to her cottage. When she entered her cottage, she excitedly greeted her parents. "Mom! Dad! How was harvesting and how was fishing?"

"Successful," Tui replied, "wow, Moana, you seem happier than the morning! Something happened while you were farming?"

"You'll know." Maui just came in. Tui and Sina's eyes widened and jaws dropped when they saw Maui enter their cottage. "Mom, dad, you may know already, but this is Maui. He helped me restore the heart of Te Fiti. I should've introduced him to you earlier but... things happened that delayed."

"How do you do?" Maui asked.

"Wow," Tui breathed in amazement.

"I can't believe a demigod is standing right before our eyes!" Sina gasped in disbelief.

"May I get a permission to stay on this island?" Maui asked rather politely. Moana was surprised. It's not so often when Maui is this polite.

"Oh, yes, you have our permission!" Tui said. "And it would be great if you can guard and take care of our daughter when we decide to go out to the voyage again!"

That suggestion was a little awkward to Moana. "Umm, I need to talk to Maui. Excuse us." She quickly grabbed Maui's wrist and dragged him out of the hut.

"What did you need to talk to me about?" Maui asked as he was being dragged by Moana by the wrist.

"Oh, nothing really, let's just get fresh air somewhere," Moana said without looking at him.

Moana and Maui walked down to the shore to get some fresh air. "Can I tell you something?" Moana started as they both sat on the low tree branch and looked at the sun.

"What is it, kid?" Maui asked.

"When you talked to my dad, that was the most polite tone I've ever heard from you," Moana said, a little amazed.

"Ah, wasn't I always polite?" Maui asked sarcastically.

"Polite person would not throw anyone off the boat." Moana snapped.

"Oh, don't bring that up," Maui said.

"But, seriously, is there a specific reason why you were so polite?" Moana asked.

"Something told me I had to be," Maui said.

"I get inner voice too, sometimes," Moana said.

"Well, I guess mortals and demigods feel the same emotions sometimes," Maui said.

"You were born by human parents after all." Pua walked up to Moana and nuzzled her ankle. "Oh, Pua!" She lifted him up to her lapse. "Maui, this is Pua, my pet pig."

"So you have two animal sidekicks?" Maui asked teasingly.

"I do." Before Maui said something, Moana quickly stopped him, "No, I am still not a princess."

"All right." Maui and Moana looked at the sun for a long time. Then he opened his mouth again to say, "Moana, you know how you cried when we met again just hours ago?"

"Mmhmm, I admit I was really happy," Moana said, a little embarrassed by her waterfall of tears earlier when she reunited with Maui.

"Did you also cry that much when you missed me?" Maui knew the answer to that question, but just to tease her, he asked it anyways.

"Um, no," she hesitated, "I didn't. I did miss you but I didn't cry." She avoided his eye contact.

Oh, you and your pride, Maui thought as he smirked. It was quite an entertainment. "All right, I believe you."

Pua sighed and shook his head. Moana quickly put him on her side where it didn't reach his eyesight. "Hold on, wait here," Moana picked up Pua and hid in the bushes.

I know what she's gonna do. I'm not even going to follow her, Maui smirked as he glanced at the sky and the ocean. Mini Maui pounded. "What? It's really funny!"

"Pua," Moana whispered, "I don't want Maui to know that I have a crush on him." Pua raised one of his eyebrows. "Oh, come on. Think about it. I'm a mortal, and he's a demigod! It can't happen. I don't think he'll let it happen! No one would approve!"

Despite the fact that Maui knew what she was talking about, even though he wasn't listening, he asked loudly so Moana can hear, "Everything okay there, kid?" Mini Maui crossed his arm and shook his head.

"Oh, we're fine! I'll be there!" Then she turned to Pua and begged, "Pua, please?" Pua helplessly nodded. She hugged him tightly and got out of the bush.

"What were you doing back there with that pig?" He had fun teasing her.

"Oh, nothing. I thought I heard Heihei. Speaking of Heihei, where is he?" Moana asked as she looked around.

Then something flew and hit Maui's head. He looked and saw what hit him. He grabbed it and held it up and said, "Well, here he is. I never knew your chicken can fly."

"No, it's the ocean. I told it to not hit me, but it hit you instead," Moana explained.

"Well, what can I expect from the ocean? The Ocean straight up pooky dooks," Maui insulted. Then a large splash of water hit Maui. Moana snickered.
