Chapter 28: Freezing Consuming (Part I)
Moana shivered as if there was an earthquake throughout her body. Cold droplets of sweats ran down from different parts of her body. Her top and bottom teeth and jaws clattered against each other repeatedly. Her skin ached all over. Even though Pua wanted to warmly nuzzle her, her body refused as they were painful by each contact. She was also coughing nonstop, which made her throat and lungs sting and dry. Her lips were chap and white. She barely had any strength to open her eyes. She also felt like vomiting again.
"I think you have a body ache, princess," Maui said.
"N-no... I c-c-can't have a b-b-body ache," Moana stuttered weakly. "We h-have t-tt-ttt-to h-he-help th-the-the-th-th-them..."
"Well, not like that, kid," Maui said. "I'm not letting you fight any monsters until you're feeling well. We'll rest on the next island... Hangaeke... which is where we're supposed to go next."
"G-g-gg-good-dd," Moana shivered. "W-w-we c-c-cc-can-"
"No, we are not fighting anyone until you're feeling better," Maui said.
"Awhhwhwhw," Moana shivered. "C-cc-c-come o-oo-o-o-o-onnn..."
"No, no," Maui said. "Stop being so stubborn. You can't fight anyone properly with the condition you are in right now."
"Oh-h-k-kkay," Moana's shivering started to become even more aggressive.
"Oh boy," Maui said as he noticed her shivering became even more aggressive. He tried to find something that would warm her. He found nothing but small piece of cloth. He used that at least to wipe the cold sweat off of Moana. Her breath was pretty feeble. She was barely able to open her eyes. "What a nasty fever..." Maui said as he continued to wipe the cold sweat off of Moana. "Oh yeah, the boat!" Maui totally lost track and reached the sail to get back on track, but Pua was controlling the direction. He watched Moana and Maui control the boat all the time that he learned just the basics of controlling the direction. "Wow, Pugley, you're pretty smart!" Maui said as he rubbed his head.
"Oink!" Pua squealed proudly.
"Why don't you watch over Moana? I'll take it from here," Maui said. He switched direction so that he can stop by next island, Hangaeke. "We need to find a doctor around here... wow, this island is pretty cold!" After he secured the boat, he carried Moana on his back, Heihei on his left arm, and Pua on his right arm. "Hang in there, Moana..." He ran around to find a doctor as his breath creating a fog in the cold weather. Everyone was wearing warm clothes such as fur coat, thick leather, and gloves and boots. "Hello?! Hello?! Is anybody here a doctor?!" Maui ran around and announced.
"Over here! Over here!" A man announced back as he exited the wooden house. He had short white hair and short white goatee.
Maui quickly ran towards the house and abruptly went inside. "Please, look over her," Maui pleaded.
"Of course," the man replied. "My name is Takuta, the doctor of this whole village. Please have her lie on the sheet over there and cover her with a blanket. I'll set up the fire and warm water. You must be cold also."
"Thank you," Maui thanked and did as he was told. He gently had Moana lie down on the sheet and carefully covered her body with blanket.
Takuta brought a pot with warm fire and pot of boiling water. He dipped a small towel in the water, carefully squeezed the water out, and used the wet towel to wipe the sweat off of Moana and to place it on her forehead. "That should warm her up," Takuta said. Then he mixed some water and herbal powder in a small bowl, and had Moana drink it. "That would do the trick. Her fever is unbearably high and her body ache is undeniably horrible. This is why you people shouldn't be dressed like this."
"Sorry, we never knew," Maui replied.
"You never knew? Are you visitors?" Takuta asked.
"Yes, we are from Motunui," Maui replied. "My name is Maui, demigod of wind and sea, hero to all. And that is Moana, the chief of Motunui."
"I see," Takuta said. "Are you on the journey?"
"Yes, and we need to complete the part of this mission in this island," Maui said.
"Yes, d-do you happen to kn-know t-this monster?" Moana asked as she took out the charm and showed it to him. "We only have to c-capture th-this one." Her shivering became even calmer, but her fever did not bother to go down.
"Moana, you okay? You seem better than earlier," Maui said, a little surprised yet a bit confused.
"My herbal medicine works like a charm, but that doesn't mean you're completely healed yet. Your pain was only relieved for a long time. You would still need to rest for a day or so," Takuta said to Maui and turned to Moana to look at the charm. "Hmm... ah! This is Hukapehe! Demon of glacier!"
"Hukapehe?" Moana asked.
"Before he came to this island, this island was a little bit cold, but not this cold to the point that it almost feels freezing," Takuta explained. "One day, he came into this island and made this land even colder. He pretty much rules the island. Since then, everyone needs to wear extra thick clothes and blankets around so that they do not catch a cold. If anyone makes him upset, he will blow a blizzard in this island and lower the temperature of this island even more."
"So that's why it was so cold on this island," Maui said.
"Do you need anything from this demon?" Takuta asked.
"Well, we need to fight it and-" Moana was trying to explain and coughed violently.
"Moana," Maui walked over to her and tapped her back gently to ease her cough. Maui placed his hand over Moana's forehead. "Kid, you shouldn't push yourself too hard. Your fever is still high."
"Fight it? You should forget it," Takuta said.
"What? What do you mean?" Maui asked. Moana wanted to speak, but as she was about to let her voice out, the cough came out instead.
"Hukapehe lives in the highest mountain in this island, over there," Takuta pointed at the highest mountain in the island out the window. Maui walked over there and looked out the window. The mountain was covered with ice and glaciers. "If you climb up there, you'll slowly be affected by the curse of Hukapehe. As you hike on that mountain, you will slowly catch a cold, and it will slowly turn into a fever, and eventually it will lead to serious disorder, and in serious cases, death. You will slowly die as the curse will stick on your back until you escape the region of the curse. Even the healthiest of the healthiest will be heavily affected by his curse."
"Has there been any victims?" Maui asked.
"Just a few," Takuta confessed. "One death and the rest came back with a serious fever."
"I must still go," Maui said.
"If you really need to go, at least wear something warm," Takuta said. "You may borrow my largest coat."
"Thank you," Maui said. He tried on the coat. The chest and arms felt a little bit tight but it was bearable. The hood was large enough to cover the back of his head and his face completely. When he turned back, he saw Moana also getting dressed with Takuta's warm clothes. "Moana? What are you doing?"
"I'm going with you," Moana said.
"What?! No, you're not!" Maui insisted.
"P-Please, I need to go," Moana stubbornly insisted.
"It is a great idea for you to not go," Takuta said. "You're already in a serious fever."
"I promised everyone that I will save them," Moana said. "Hukapehe is not a true demon. If it wasn't for Kapu'uila, it wouldn't have been this way. No matter what kind of person he or she was, he or she probably wanted a fairer life. I just want to give them one more chance."
"What is she talking about?" Takuta asked Maui.
Maui stood still as he heard Moana's speech of determination. "Takuta, is there any way to slow down the curse?"
"Well, besides wearing warmer..." Takuta started, then he started to look inside the drawer. "Ah! Here it is!" He said as he took out a pouch of marbles. "These are food pills. If you take this, you will feel much warmer. Since the curse is the coldness itself weakening people's immune system, feeling warmer would make you feel better. Take this when you start to have a feeling of becoming weak while you climb up the mountain. Hukapehe lives on the peak."
"Gotcha," Maui said.
"Please take this, especially you, ma'am," Takuta said as he handed the pouch.
"Thank you," Moana said as she took the pouch of food pills. "And also, can you keep my animal friends safe?" Moana asked as she held up Pua and Heihei.
"Of course, we love animals," Takuta said. "Our island people rarely eats animals. If we do, we make sure we pray to the unfortunate soul who had to sacrifice its life for our hunger. Well, except fish. But if we were eating meats such as cow, pig, or chicken, we usually have a tribal prayer to wish fortune in their afterlife. This is why we barely have any cows, pigs, or chickens on this island. Now, I wish you luck," Takuta said as put one fist over his heart and the other fist on his back.
"Thank you," Moana said as she copied his movement. Maui was confused but he did the movement after Moana. Then they both exited Takuta's house and headed towards the mountain. Even though it was cold, the warm clothes that they borrowed from Takuta made them feel neutral about their body temperature. "Wow, these clothes are super warm," Moana said as she felt much more comfort in the clothes she was wearing.
"By the way, what was that earlier, when you two put one fist over the chest and the other one on the back?" Maui asked.
"I honestly don't know," Moana confessed. "But I just thought that it was how people salute each other in this island."
"You're pretty fast-witted, kid," Maui said. "Also, are you feeling okay now? You stopped shivering."
"I'm feeling a little better," Moana said.
"But you would still need to watch out," Maui said. "Once we start getting in the curse zone that Takuta was talking about, not just you but I would also start getting sick."
"We'll be careful," Moana said.
"Where is the mountain now?" Maui asked.
"Isn't it that one?" Moana asked as she pointed at the tallest mountain.
Maui looked at the direction where she pointed. "Oh yeah! It's that one!" Maui said.
"I kinda wish that we can get there fast enough," Moana said as she looked at Maui.
"Sure, but why are you looking at me for?" Maui asked, even though he knew the answer.
"Pleeeease?" Moana begged.
"Nope, not this time, kid," Maui said. "I need to save my energy. And don't you dare even try to make a puppy face to me, because it's not going to work-" Moana made a puppy face to Maui.
Maui transformed into a hawk and flew to the highest mountain as Moana rode on his back. "You see? This is much easier!" Moana said.
"Easier for you," Maui said as he continued to fly towards the tallest mountain. He landed on the base of the mountain. "Whew! That was tiring! You realize you gained so much weight?" Maui asked as he transformed back into a human. Moana crossed her arms and glared at him without saying a word. "Well, why don't we go get that monster?" Maui suggested.
"We should," Moana said as she changed her mood. "I will make sure the unfortunate soul who has been cursed and forced to perform evil deeds get a second chance to live a fairer life!" Moana was determined to capture every creatures to save people.
Dang... Maui thought as he thought about how Moana crossed her arms and glared at him earlier. It looks like she is gonna defeat me before I get defeated by Hukapehe! Even though it was not that cold yet, chills crawled all over and throughout his body. Anyways, this is the start... Maui said as he looked above the mountain.
