Chapter 27: Island of Resentment
They all walked down the staircase and saw a bright light downstairs. As Moana and Maui all stepped into the fifth room with Pua and Heihei in their hands, they saw a giant stone walls with bunch of ancient writing and painting carved on them.
"Wow, these ancient paintings are sure mind-blowing although I don't know what they are signifying," Moana said.
Maui took a closer examination. "No, these aren't old."
"What do you mean it's not old?" Moana asked. "Well is it like hundred years old or something?"
"No, these are pretty recent," Maui replied. "They don't look old. Take a closer look.
Moana took a closer look. She touched the painting. When she looked at the finger that touched the painting, there were some ink smudged on her finger. Moana was confused yet surprised. "But how? How are these all still new? It seems like they were painted like an hour ago or so!"
"I have no idea either, kid," Maui was also bewildered by still-wet paint on the wall.
While they were trying to figure out the answer to the riddle of the wet paint and the painting all around the wall, the desperate voice triggered their eardrums: "Please... please... please hear me out..."
"Who was that?!" Moana asked as she took her stand with her hands near the giant eel's teeth.
"Show yourself!" Maui shouted as he took his stand with his fishhook.
"Please don't be scared, I won't hurt you," the voice said again. "Please... lower your weapons... I'm scared..." the voice sounded weak yet desperate.
Both Moana and Maui lowered their weapons and continued to stand up like a normal person. "All right, I'll let you talk. What do you have to say to us?" Moana asked in a more friendly manner.
"All I wanted to say," the voice said. "The whole point of this journey is to defeat Kapu'uila."
"What?" Moana was confused.
"What are you talking about?" Maui asked.
"Allow me to show you," the voice said. Then suddenly, all the paintings merged together and started to animate for Moana and Maui to see. As the painting was animated, the voice narrated: "One thousand and two hundred years ago, there was a young boy, who was abandoned by everyone in his village as no one was willing to accept his hard work. He never fought back no matter who much villagers physically and verbally abused him. He finally jumped into the water to end his life. However, the ocean brought him to the gods and goddesses, and gave him special power to help people.
He was given a power of lightning to completely change the person. He used that power to help someone who was just like him: abandoned, depressed, fallen deeply into despair, and kept resentment towards one or more people. By using his lightning, he changed the person into completely different human being: many became much more talented with certain skills, and some were given fortune to be loved by others no matter what. After doing such nice things to a lot of people, he decided to go back to the village himself where he was first abandoned. He was hopeful that people would have different attitudes towards him.
However, he was wrong, very wrong. People still hated him and wanted him out of the village. The abuse was much worse than before. That was when he lost his conscious. He raged deeply and attacked the village with no survivors. He had a new power to turn everything, along with people whom he helped, into a evil monsters and attack and destroy everything and everyone. As the situation became worse for seven hundred years, when mortal realm believed to have no hope, all the gods and goddesses stepped in to capture Kapu'uila and the monsters he created. Now the monsters are roaming around, spreading evil influences and destruction, while Kapu'uila was held back by Rangi and Papa. It is your job to capture all of them, and fight against Kapu'uila, and bring back the world peace." The animation of the painting stopped. "I drew this just in time..."
"How do we fight against him?" Moana asked.
"I am honestly not sure," the voice replied. "But I hope you will find a way during the rest of your journey. You may find the answer."
"What about the letter? It looked like he needed help from us," Maui said.
"That was to make himself look good and make his own creations look bad," the voice said. "At this point, Kapu'uila cares nothing else but himself. The charms were made by him so that he can elaborate that he is a good being. He also used Te Kā as an excuse to persuade that he is the good one around."
Hearing this story made Moana extremely disappointed, and Maui extremely confused.
"I... I can't believe it..." Moana said. "We... we've been tricked by him this whole time... but... but how... why..." She didn't know what to say.
"I know this will be undeniably difficult for you to understand, but I am speaking the truth," the voice said. "But you must focus and get back on track."
Maui stayed quiet.
"By the way, who are you?" Moana asked.
"I am the last creature you need to capture to complete the mission for this island," the voice said.
"Why are you telling this to us?" Maui asked.
"Because all those creatures that were captured deserve a second chance to live a happier life after being betrayed by Kapu'uila," the voice replied.
"Wow... I... I still... can't believe... oh," Moana sighed with her breath mixed with frustration, fury, and resentment.
Maui still stayed quiet.
"Also, I have something to give you," the voice said.
"What is it?" Moana and Maui asked.
"It is letter written by the soul of forbidden creatures," the voice replied. "Please read it. This will answer the question you had about desperate and depressed voices being heard whenever you catch certain creatures. Like I said, some were created by unfortunate mortals who were helped by Kapu'uila, but turned evil as he turned evil, and some were created by random objects or organisms he was able to find around him."
"Let's see, it's read..."
(Moana continues to read it, but it narrates with a voice of a soul full of resentment) All of us were once mortal with unfortunate fate. We had extremely horrible lives. Some of us were abandoned by our family, some of us were betrayed by our people, some of us were never accepted, and some of us were even abused by others. That was when Kapu'uila gave us a hand and gave us an opportunity to shine. He taught us how to farm, fish, hunt, sail, combat, and a lot of other different techniques that we never realized they existed. He even granted us special powers to some of us. We thought this was going to be the happiest moments of our lives. However, as Kapu'uila started to change, he changed all of us. As he was raging for unknown reason, he turned us evil, forcing us to destroy everything, even the things and people we started to love. We were then punished and imprisoned by every gods and goddesses. We don't want to behave this way. Please spare us."
"It wasn't these creatures that needed to be captured," Moana said. "It was Kapu'uila who caused all this! But he said that those creatures were after us..."
"He made a false statement to lure you two into this," the voice explained.
"But how...?" Maui asked himself as he went into a deep thought. "Kapu'uila would never betray anyone. Why would he do that...?"
"You cannot or you shouldn't trust anyone fully," the voice said. "However, you will still need to capture all the creatures so that gods and goddesses would know what to do with them. You should never quit. Do you understand?"
"Yes, we understand," Moana answered for herself and Maui.
"Now, please hold up your charm and allow me to seal myself in that charm." Moana held up her charm. Few moments later, the charm lit up and the voice let out its last words: "Please avenge us... teach Kapu'uila a lesson so that he would never ever betray the group like that ever again... we're counting on you..."
Moana flipped through all the charms she had for this island. "Do not worry. No matter what happens, we will defeat Kapu'uila and turn you back the way you were since the beginning. We promise in a name of all gods and goddesses." Then she turned to Maui and said, "All right, let's go, Maui."
"Yeah, sure," Maui replied.
They walked back all the way up the flights of stairs to get back on their boat. They loosed the boat from the island and sailed out.
"What did you mean, Maui?" Moana asked as she overheard Maui talking to himself.
"What do you mean 'what did you mean'?" Maui asked.
"I heard you talking to yourself that Kapu'uila would never betray anyone," Moana explained.
"Oh, that. What I meant is that Kapu'uila would never betray anyone," Maui said. "Trust me, I met him once, and I spent time with him. He has much nicer personality that I do, he really does. Why would he do such a thing...?"
"I don't know..." Moana said.
While they were in such a deep thought, Pua snuggled into Maui's arms and started to take a nap. That view made Maui chuckle and Moana snicker. "Pua must've been attracted to your arm warmth, Maui," Moana said.
"Cute little Pugley," Maui chuckled even more as he lovingly caressed him.
A/N: Kapu'uila is NOT a real Polynesian god. He is there to enhance the story. I wish I had skill to research the real ones though... also, questions for my Q&A please!
