Chapter 25: Island of Despair
They stepped down the stairs to finish their mission, at least on this island, if they can find all the creatures they are looking for. Moana was worried about what can happen on the third floor. Second floor was horrible enough already, although what she went through with the giant eel was worse.
"Maui," Moana called.
"Hmm?" Maui responded.
"What happens if I want to throw up again?" Moana asked.
"Then do it," Maui said. "As long as it's not on me, it's completely fine."
"I see," Moana said. She did not take that as a joke as she was completely nervous about the unknown and unpredictability.
"Something wrong, kid?" Maui asked as he started to be a little bit more concerned about her condition.
"No, I just have a feeling that some other horrible image might show up on the third floor," Moana explained. "You know, that image of giant eel being sliced in half is still stuck in my head. I mean, it's not that traumatizing as of that moment, but still..."
"Do I need to make you a blindfold?" Maui asked.
"How am I supposed to fight against evil if I can't physically see?" Moana asked.
"Geez, didn't have to be so bitter," Maui said in sulking tone.
"Sorry, I'm not a sweet person," Moana said.
Mini Maui gave Moana another tally mark.
"It sounds like you feel better," Maui said.
"Talking to you makes me feel better for some reason," Moana confessed.
"Glad to hear so," Maui said.
Moana and Maui may squabble, seriously or playfully, but the situation always ends with a heartwarming words or actions.
The third floor was really... bright. They didn't even need a spare torch as a light source. There were lanterns with bunch of fireflies in each lanterns. They were able to see everything, in the third floor, which was basically hallway with bunch of rooms... too many rooms...
"How many rooms are in here?" Moana asked as she looked around.
"Uh... there's more than twenty..." Maui said as he skimmed through the hallway and estimated the amount of rooms.
Moana breathed hard, blew her hair, and let her breath flicker the strand of her hair sticking out of her forehead. "Oh my goodness..."
"'We gotta finish what we gotta finish'," Maui quoted Moana.
"I didn't complain," Moana said.
"Then what were you doing?" Maui asked.
"Being frustrated about the complicated step of finishing the mission," Moana answered.
"Is it different from-" Maui started.
"Yes, it is different from straight-up complaining," Moana finished it for him.
"All right, chief," Maui answered.
"Let's check each room," Moana said. "There should be one at least every two rooms."
"Is that a staircase over there, by the way?" Maui asked as he pointed at the large stone door that looked almost the same one from the second floor leading to third floor. Only thing that was different was there was some sort of plate on the center of the stone door. "What is that thing on the center, by the way?"
"Let's go see," Moana said as she walked in towards the gate. The plate had some sort of holes that fit some figures in it. "One, two, three, four, five... there are ten holes," Moana said as she counted the holes. "Looks like we gotta find the matching cubes, spheres, and other things..." She said as she examined the size and the shape of the holes.
"Out of all twenty or more rooms?" Maui asked.
"You know what I'm gonna say," Moana responded.
"Of course, chief," Maui replied.
"Let's go in the first room," Moana said. They all entered the first room. It was not as they expected... it was rather clean in the room. Although the stones looked like plain old rocks, they looked polished enough that it can be used as a mirror. Moana and Maui were able to see their faces as they looked at the stone. Pua was also amazed by how shiny the stones were. Heihei pecked on the stones as Moana passed by them to examine if there were figures that belonged to the stone gate. "Some were pretty small... we have to looks carefully..." Moana said.
"Wow, this is very..." Maui started, but he couldn't think of a word.
"Difficult?" Moana asked.
"That word with the connotation of the word 'irritating'," Maui said.
"Well, those two words are easy to combine yet difficult to think of a word that has both meanings," Moana admitted. "Actually, there are. Bothersome, frustrating..."
"Wow, you are a pretty intelligent chief," Maui complimented. "Smart with hunting, farming, sailing, way-finding, combating, and now word-using. I'm very impressed. What are you not good at?"
"Finding these stones," Moana said as she continued to search for the stones what seems to be the keys of the gate.
"Yeah... let's continue," Maui said.
They continued to struggle to find those rocks as they migrated to different rooms to find them. Even Moana started to feel frustration as it felt like hours and hours to find those rocks. "Ughh... this is the fourth room, and we still didn't find anything!"
"Should we move to fifth room?" Maui asked.
"Fine..." Moana replied. She did not mean to sound irritated, but she hoped that Maui understood.
"It's okay, Moana," Maui was able to hear her frustration. "I feel ya..."
"Thanks for understanding," Moana said as she smirked.
"You're welcome," Maui said. Moana walked, almost stomped, inside the sixth room, only to have something cover her mouth and dragged her to the side. Maui definitely saw that. He quickly went inside to see what it was, but Moana already made that thing faint. "Thank goodness you're safe," Maui said as he quickly entered.
"I even got the monster," Moana said as she showed the green charm. "The monster touched my pocket full of charms and it activated."
"So lucky chance there, huh?" Maui said.
"Yup," Moana replied. "To be even luckier, it was two that got captured. There are only two more charms left."
"Do you think the rest two are in this floor or downstairs?" Maui asked.
"We'll see," Moana said.
"If the rest two are in this floor, should we just go back?" Maui asked. "This place is hopeless! We haven't found a single piece!"
"You know what? It IS hopeless..." Moana admitted. "After this, I just wanna give up on this whole journey..."
"I know right...?" Maui responded. "This is very frustrating."
... Then they realized what they have just said.
"Whoa, that was close. Why were we having that mindset?" Moana asked.
"It could be the floor's aura, or we're being tricked by a monster," Maui said.
"Oh my gosh, what a horrible thought we just had," Moana said. "We need to get this over with before we fall into complete hopelessness."
"Oh geez," Maui exhaled deeply. "That was seriously a close call..."
"Wait... wait... oh! I found it!" Moana exclaimed as she picked out the sphere figure.
"Hey, I found one too!" Maui exclaimed as he picked up the prism figure.
"Eight more... let's put them on the gate first," Moana said. Maui agreed and they put the figures on the right place.
They continued to search for more keys to the gate. Moana and Maui decided to migrate to sixth room to find the rest of the two monsters and eight keys. They found a cube and a ellipsoid figure and placed them in the right hole.
"Six more to go," Moana said as she placed the figures in the holes.
In the seventh room, they found two more keys: one hexagonal prism, another one rectangular prism. "Four more to go," Moana said as she looked at the amount of rooms she have left to check and analyzed how fast they were finding the keys, Moana felt much more optimistic. In the eighth room, she and Maui found exactly three more: one cylinder prism, one dome prism, and one tetrahedron prism. They both stuck all three into the right holes. "All right! One more to go and we're set for downstairs!" Moana cheered excitedly.
They both moved to the ninth room, nothing at all. No keys. No monsters. Just plain emptiness with polished stone walls. The same thing went for tenth, eleventh, twelfth, thirteenth, fourteenth, fifteenth, sixteenth, seventeenth, and eighteenth room. Even though the description of them of searching for the monster and the last key for the gate, their search has lasted hours and hours. Moana and Maui were both quiet and irritated while they were finding the last key, but they did not want to show it. Moana's anger started to build in her chest and she wanted to let it out, but she decided not to. She knew that Maui was also irritated enough. If she lets it out, it wouldn't be fair for Maui who's trying to hold it in.
While she was searching in the nineteenth room, she noticed that Maui wasn't with her. "Maui?" She asked as she looked around in the sixth room. "Maui?" She asked once more, still no response.
She decided to go back to the ninth room. She saw Maui crouching in the corner and Pua slowly walking around him. "Maui? What's wrong?" She walked over there to check his condition.
"It's... hopeless..." Maui said. "It's all hopeless!"
"Maui? We talked about this!" Moana tried to calm him down.
"I don't care! Odds are never on our side!" Maui said as he rubbed his head aggressively.
"Maui, we can get through this," Moana sounded even more calming.
"Nothing matters anymore..." Maui said in almost a crying voice. "Nothing... it's all gone... we can't get through this..."
Why... all of a sudden? Moana thought. I mean, not all of a sudden but how? Wait... I'm feeling hopeless too... Moana took out the two charms before she felt that it was going to be too late.
She was about to place both charms on Maui, but then a form of gas escaped Maui's brain. She quickly placed both charms on the gas. It was absorbed into one of them. "Looks like this was the problem," Moana said as she held up the charm that has just turned green.
"Hey, my frustration is gone now," Maui said happily.
"Lucky..." Moana said as she still had the same amount of frustration deep inside her chest. It felt as if it was burning her lungs, heart, and other internal organs that are close to her chest that she wanted to let it out through her vocal chord. She no longer wanted to hold that boiling pain in her chest.
"Do you need to let it out too?" Maui asked as he analyzed her facial expression. Moana nodded. "I'll go to the different room, hold my ears, and you can scream as loud as you want when I say you can. Deal?" Moana nodded in agreement. "Okay, I'll go to the next room." Maui quickly moved to the first room and stuck his fingers deep into his ear that he was barely able to hear what he was saying. "Okay, you may scream!" Maui announced. He was able to hear muffled scream and he felt that if he took his fingers out, his eardrums would explode. Pua even covered his ears and held its paws tight to his ears. The scream lasted about ten seconds, and then it stopped. Maui slowly took out his fingers from his ears. He blew the earwax away from the tip of his fingers. He went back to check up on Moana to see if she's all right.
"Maui, check this out!" Moana said as she pointed at the wall that was shattered into pieces.
"Your scream did... that?" Maui asked.
"I guess so," Moana replied. "And check THIS out!" Moana said as she showed him the diamond shaped prism, the last key to the gate.
"Impressive kid," Maui was proud yet scared.
Moana proudly walked over to the the gate and stuck the last piece in. The door creaked open to lead downstairs. "Let's go now."
Moana, Maui, Pua, and Heihei all started to step downstairs, and of course, Pua was still being held by Maui, and Heihei was still being held by Moana. "You know, I wish we knew where everything was before we came down to this floor so that we didn't have to go through this mess," Maui said.
"True," Moana snickered.
"I wonder what will happen on the fourth floor," Maui said.
"Hopefully, nothing so big," Moana hoped.
