Chapter 10: Tamatoa's Return of Favor

Maui sailed as Moana looked at the map of where the creatures are at. Pua sat still and let his fur flutter in the ocean breeze. Heihei was still kept inside the storage, probably bumping into walls, or picking at the floor, like he always does. "According to this map, creatures at Motunui is already taken care of. But should we even trust this map? What if the creatures move to different islands?"

"Demons or creatures that used to belong on the land will go to that land, and stay on land," Maui explained, "and the demons or creatures that belong on sea would spawn in certain location."

"I see," Moana said. "We're going to Lalotai first, right? Like we agreed earlier?"

"Yeah," Maui said. "That's the closest one." Maui lied down on his back with an excited smile across his face, his eyes closed, and his hands behind the back of his head. Then his excited smile turned into an irritated frown. He got up and asked Moana, "By the way, is there a charm for Tamatoa?"

Moana flipped through the packet of charms to look for any charm that had an image of Tamatoa. "Hmm, nope. I don't think he's a forbidden creature. Even Kakamora is not even in any of the charm."

"Hmph," Maui grunted in disappointed. Then he let his disappointment go and asked Moana, "Say, how many creatures do we need to capture in Lalotai?"

"Let's see," Moana flipped through charms and searched through the map. "There are two creatures that we need to capture." She let out a short breath to relieve her excitement and nervousness. "But I really hope that we don't run into Tamatoa again."

"What do you think what happened to him?" Maui asked as he lied down again with his hands behind his back.

"I don't know," Moana replied honestly as she tilted the oar to change the direction. "We'll see. Since you can transform perfectly, you can probably face him when you two meet again."

"I hope so," Maui said. As he let Moana continue to wayfind through the ocean surface, he noticed a large tower, which was really the entrance of Lalotai. "Muscle up, buttercup! We're here."

"Whoa," Moana breathed. "You can never get used to this sight." Pua followed her. "Oh, no, Pua, you stay here. It's dangerous. It's even worse than Kakamora. Stay here and watch over Heihei." Pua plopped down next to the storage. "I'll be back as soon as possible. I promise." Moana pet him few times and started to climb the stone mountain.

"You know I can transform now, right?" Maui asked, with a bit of sass.

"Your point is?" Moana asked; returning Maui's sass back to him.

"I can transform and I can take you all the way to the top," Maui explained.

"Great idea," Moana said with a smirk on her face. Maui transformed into a giant hawk and Moana climbed up to his back. Moana whooped in excitement as she felt the wind flowing through her hair. Maui soared to top of the mountain and transformed back into a human form as Moana stepped on the entrance. Maui went to the center of the entrance. "Ah-nux! Ah-nux! Au-we! Heeeeee!" He jumped and landed hard so that the entrance open. Before he jumped into the entrance, Moana dived into Lalotai.

"Whooooo!" Moana exclaimed as she fell into the realm.

She's even braver now, Maui thought as he watched Moana dive into Lalotai. Or she's becoming more reckless... "Cheeeehooooo!" He exclaimed as he went in. The entrance shut down with a loud thud. After falling, Moana safely landed as she grabbed a vine, swung to lower vine, then to another lower vine, and hopped down from the vine where she felt that she could jump off without getting hurt. Maui landed after her. "You know, you're even braver and more reckless after you restored the heart of Te Fiti."

"Wasn't I always brave?" Moana asked as she lifted her eyebrows. "I saved your life by making Te Kā come to me."

"I admit," Maui said. "I'll have to thank you for that one." They both snickered.

"You know, I know you're having fun," a voice came from behind. "But can you do me a favor? Still upside down here." Moana and Maui turned to where the voice came from. It was Tamatoa, who was squirming, still upside down.

"Why would we help you?!" Maui exclaimed with fury. "You tried to kill us!"

"I beg you, help me," Tamatoa said, still squirming.

"Why don't we help him?" Moana suggested.

"But Moana, he tried to eat you last time," Maui said. "Who knows what happens when we put him back up?"

"Well, if he tries to kill us again," Moana suggested. "Just chop off his other leg." Tamatoa flinched.

"Whoa," Maui freaked out by Moana's unexpected suggestion. He never knew Moana would suggest something like that. "Never knew you'd say something like that."

"I won't hurt you guys! I promise! Let me stand up!" Tamatoa begged.

"All right, we'll help you," Maui said.

"But you know," Moana started, "I'm not sure if I can-" Maui picked up Tamatoa with one arm, tossed him up, which made Tamatoa flip and land upright. "Well, at least I didn't have to sweat on it."

"Whew!" Tamatoa breathed in relief. "I'm finally free!" Tamatoa excitedly ran around. "Ah! It feels so much better!"

"All right," Moana said. "Since we helped you, leave us alone now. We have forbidden creatures to capture."

"Forbidden creatures?" Tamatoa asked. "Good luck with that," He encouraged without any encouraging tone.

"You tried to kill her, and she agreed to save your life, at least make yourself sound encouraging," Maui said sternly. Tamatoa scoffed.

"It's fine," Moana said as she tugged Maui's arms. "Let's just go find these creatures."

"Don't let anyone talk to you like that again," Maui said as he stomped away.

"You seem to be so protective to that girl," Tamatoa said. "You like her in certain way don't you? Am I right, or am I right?"

"Yes I do," Maui said confidently. "In fact, we're in a relationship."

"Whaa-at?" Tamatoa asked, confused but making a disgusted face to provoke them.

"Maui, remember, we're on a mission," Moana reminded. "Don't just tell anyone about our relationship. We don't have time for any of this."

"All right, chief of Motunui," Maui said. "See you later, crab cake!" Tamatoa laughed silently from behind, provoking them and their relationship.

As they exited from Tamatoa's sight, Moana whispered, "Maui, I do love you, but you have to understand how I feel about spreading the fact that we're in a relationship."

"I know, I know," Maui said. "I just want to beat him in a lot of ways."

"Your transformation works now, so you'll beat him in any way," Moana said.

Suddenly, something wrapped around her stomach. Moana and Maui both looked in shock. Then it pulled her away from Maui. "Maui! Help!" Maui quickle sliced the thing that wrapped her stomach with his fishhook.

"What is that?" Maui asked in disgust.

"I don't know," Moana said, "but the same thing happened to me the first time I've been in Lalotai, except that it was monster's tongue that time. But this looks like, some sort of leaf. Anyhow, we should go check what that thing is." Moana ran towards the the direction where the leaf came from.

"Moana, don't be so reckless!" Maui chased after her. "You don't know what it is! You gotta be more careful when we're capturing these types of beast!"

Moana stopped when she saw a large green reptile-like creature in front of her. It had a neon lime-green sphere body shape with some form of liquid extracting from it, large tail, four legs that were coming from random places, when it opened it's mouth, it's tongue was missing. "Ew! The leaf looking thing was its tongue!"

"More than of all, its body is disgusting," Maui said as he examined its body and the leaking liquid. "I don't want my fishhook near that thing."

"Darn, I don't even have anything to attack with," Moana said.

The creature roared, which made it spit out purple globs. Moana and Maui quickly dodged it. The purple glob made dripping sound that would make anyone sick just by listening to it. "Oh, goodness... I'm gonna throw up," Maui groaned as the purple globs didn't escape out of his sight and his thoughts. He felt so nauseous that he thought he was going to throw up in any minute now.

"Focus, Maui," Moana said. The truth is, she also felt like vomiting her stomach out. Then it started to chase Moana. She groaned and quickly ran away as it chased her. Maui couldn't just watch Moana being chased. He squeezed his eyes shut and transformed into a hawk. He quickly soared over to it and chopped off one of his legs. It lost its balance and fell on its side.

He quickly transformed back into a human and asked, "Is there a charm for that nasty object?"

Moana quickly looked at two of the charms that she brought for Lalotai. "Yes, it's this one," Moana said as she showed the on with the image that looks just like the nasty green beast. "Does it work even when it's not defeated?"

"We should try," Maui suggested. "I'll do it." He took the charm, transformed into a hawk, squeezed his eyes shut, and quickly placed the charm on the green creature. Surely, the creature turned into a light and as sucked into the charm. "Glad that's over with." Maui said as he transformed back into human.

"Well, I hope we can take care of the other one fast," Moana wanted to get out of Lalotai as soon as possible. She looked at the other charm, the creature seemed to have a body shaped as human, but with larger hands, larger feet, and eyes and mouth all over the body. Moana rolled her eyes. "I guess the thing is gonna get bad also."

"We need to find that creature and put that charm on it," Maui said.

"You mean this disgusting thing?" Tamatoa said from behind. Moana and Maui turned to him. The creature that they were looking for was dangling on Tamatoa's claw. He dropped the creature in front of them. Moana and Maui thought for a moment as they both looked at each other. Moana smiled and placed the charm on the creature. "Don't get me wrong, he was trying to steal my shiny treasures," Tamatoa said.

"Well, thank you," Moana said.

"I know your true intention, Tamatoa," Maui said, "Spit it out."

"All right, all right," Tamatoa said. "I may be a psychopathic crab, but I just needed to thank you guys for helping me back up. I know you're not gonna hurt me if I don't try to hurt you. So, I just helped. This creature was never in Lalotai so I figured you must be looking for him."

"Thanks anyways," Moana said.

Tamatoa walked into his lair without responding to Moana's thanks. He rotated his eyes and said, "This doesn't mean we're friends. But I guess we can say we're not enemies anymore. Now get out of here." He walked into his lair and sat down to wait for more free seafood. Moana and Maui exited Lalotai with erupting water holes. He watch them go all the way up to the mortal realm. "Well, doing something does feel good," Tamatoa said as Moana and Maui were out of his sight.

Moana and Maui packed everything and sailed out of the entrance of Lalotai. "You know," Moana said. "Tamatoa does have his kindness side sometimes."

"It's because you're so sweet, Moana," Maui said.

"Well let's see the map, where should we go next?" Moana said as she watched the map. "The closest island from Lalotai is... Uhanai... hmm never heard of that island before. All right, next stop, Uhanai!"

Maui chuckled as he turned the boat.
