My Attempt To End It All

One Shot #6

Maui's POV

 I'm standing on top of an office building in the never sleeping city of New York City, replaying the last eighteen years of my life on a loop, all of my mistakes dominating over everything else. All I do is make mistakes. My friends and family are all ashamed of me, I'm ashamed of me, and every girl I've been with is ashamed of me. They won't say it directly to my face, but I can tell that that's how they feel. That's why I'm going to jump off the ledge of this building. I'm going to rid everyone of the burden that is myself. Without me in the world, I don't have to hold back anyone anymore. 

    I step out onto the ledge, close my eyes, and mentally prepare myself for the long fall I'm about to take. Right before my second leg flies off the edge, I hear someone shout "Stop!" in a panicked voice. I turn around and see that it's a girl close to my age, probably sixteen or seventeen. She's fairly pretty and seems genuinely concerned about me. I just stare at her in silence, still standing on the ledge. She comes over me and extends a hand out to me. With hesitation, I grab it and let her pull me off the ledge and back on to the solid ground of the roof. "Why were you trying to jump off that ledge?" I look down at the ground, too ashamed to make eye contact with the girl standing in front of me. 

     "I want to die. I'm a burden to everyone in my life, both past and present. I'm also a disappointment. I don't live up to what everyone wants me to be." She frowns. "Well I may not know you, but you seem like a wonderful person. I'd love to get to know you." I choke back a sob. "No you don't. Once you do, you'll leave just like everyone else." She takes a step closer to me and takes both of my hands in hers. I stare at her in disbelief at the fact that a girl like her would want to touch a beast like me. "I'm not going anywhere. I'm here for you. What's your name?" "My name's M--MMM---Maui. What's yours?" She gives me a beautiful smile. "My name's Moana." "That's a really pretty name. You're also really pretty." She blushes and kisses me on the cheek. "Thank you. By the way Maui, you're adorable." I blush back in response. 

      "Listen Maui, why don't you come stay at my place for the night? I can tell you don't want to go home right now and the truth is I don't blame you. I wouldn't want to either. My parents would be totally fine with it." "Aaaaa---rreeee you sure Moana? I don't want to intrude." "Nonsense Maui. I want you to stay with me." "Alright, I'll stay with you." I grab a hold of her hand and walk home with her.
