#17

I looked out the window observing the dark clouds forming in the sky. It was already late in the afternoon and I need to get Caleb from school but I think it would rain before I could reached Caleb's school.

I sat back down on my chair with a groan. I looked at my desk and found that there was still tons of papers that I should finish before going home. I tired sigh escaped from my mouth.

Suddenly, my phone rang loudly from my side and I picked it up, beaming to myself.

"Hello brother." Diam's voice flowed through my ears.

"What great timing you have Diam. Can you get Caleb later from school? I have an important event to cater this evening and I don't think I will be able to fetch Caleb from school today."

"I was supposed to ask you for a favor too but you put another task at my hand. But because I just love my nephew so I'm saying yes." I smiled.

"Okay! I will fetch Caleb in your house later this evening."

Just when the phone call between me and Diam ended, rain came falling from the sky. The world was so dark from the strong rain. I heaved a sigh and quickly called Caleb's teacher to inform him that someone else would fetch Caleb after school. Not that it cares because we are twins afterall, but Diam made sure to differ his style from me to avoid people from being confused who is who.

I turned to my desk and continued my work so that the only thing that I will be thinking about is the event later.

---

The event took too long than I had expected. Since it was a huge company I couldn't just tell them that they need to leave because its already time. They extended another hour which made me winced but still held it in and gave out a smile saying it was okay.

The event finally ended around eleven in the evening but when I came out of the establishment, it was already around one in the morning since we have to clean and arrange everything. I was so worn out that I wanted to sleep but I need to go to Diam's place first to fetch Caleb.

It was still raining hard that I quickly ran to my car parked on the other side of the road. I didn't happen to bring an umbrella because I thought the rain wasn't that strong but I was mistaken.

When I was running to cross the street, I didn't notice the upcoming vehicle heading straight at me. I almost blacked out on the road but luckily the vehicle swerve to my right and I quickly ran to the other side of the road. I heard the driver cursed at me before driving off. I heaved a sigh of relief and with shaking hands, I unlocked the car door of my car and got inside.

I sat there trying to calm myself before driving. I was so shocked and scared for my own life and for my own son too. What if that truck didn't manage to swerve to my right, I would have been dead by now and Caleb would be left alone.

With shaking hands, I grip the steering wheel of the car tight and finally drove down to Diam's house.

While I was driving, my phone kept on vibrating against my pockets so I fetch it out on my pockets to look who at the person who was calling. When I saw who it is, another tired sigh escaped from my lips. I connected the call to my speaker and put down my phone on the passengers seat.

"What is it Mr. Miers? How can I help you?" I asked. My eyes focused on the road while driving.

"Nothing. I just want to call you." His husky voice seemed like music that enveloped the inside atmosphere of the car.

"Its already late."

"Yeah. But you're still awake too."

I pushed the middle part of the steering wheel when a cat suddenly jumped out of nowhere. I cursed to myself and continued driving, forgetting that I was talking to someone on the phone.

"Are you driving? Where are you going?"

"None of your business."

"Lay. Its already one in the morning. How come you're still not home at this time of hour?"

"Lay. Go home and stop making me worry. Where are you?"

When I wanted to focus myself on driving, I couldn't focused anymore. The more I hear Alexander's voice echo inside the car, I felt myself began to worry and feel at edge. It was so uncomfortable that I didn't realized that I had increased my speed as I travelled the highway.

"Lay, stop driving and tell me where you are. I don't want to drive at this time of hour."

"Lay listen to me and obey me."

When Alexander said those words, I felt an impending anger slowly rose in me. I looked at the speaker in front of me and yelled.

"Will you just shut up?! How many times do I have to tell you that its none of your business?!"

I heard a loud honked from my side which made me startled on my seat. The car behind me picked up speed and wanted to overtake me on the road but when he was finally on my side, the car decided to hit my own car, sending me to the other lane.

I looked at the car who hit me to memorize its plate number so that I can report it to the police when suddenly, a vehicle a coming to my way hit me head on. The impact was so strong that I felt my body shook as my car went tumbling down dangerously.

The windshield broke into pieces and I felt the latter half of my body begun to get numb from getting stuck underneath. I felt the familiar rusty tatse of blood in my mouth which I vomitted. I looked down on my body and saw something pierced through my stomach and left shoulder. I lifted my right hand and tried to remove those things from me but I didn't have the strength anymore.

'Caleb, I'm coming for you. Dad is coming for you.' My mind kept on chanting.

I felt my eyes sting as I finally cried painfully. My body was hurting that I had slowly loose consciousness. Before I loose consciousness, I saw my phone flashing on the floor.

Even though the screen was all cracked up, I can still see that it was Alexander who was calling. I tried to reached it to get help but my body was too painful that finally I blacked out.
