Chapter 1: First Day
It was 1984 in the middle of the school year, and I just moved from Macon, Georgia, to San Francisco to live with my father.
"Michelle, it's been thirteen years since your mother and I divorced and I know that you miss her already. But she thought that it was best for you to stay here for a while." Dad said.
"But I didn't want to leave," I said with tears running down my face. "All of my friends are there."
"I know, but you can't stay in that neighborhood. It wasn't safe enough for you."
"I know, dad." I looked down and sighed.
"Look Michelle, you're sixteen and almost out of high school," Dad lifted my chin. "You can always keep in touch with your friends in Macon, but you can make new friends here."
"I guess you're right, dad." I shrugged my shoulders.
"That's my little girl, now get some rest. Tomorrow's your first day at Lowell High and I don't want you to get sleepy in class." Dad left me in my room alone as I unpacked my things. After spending a few minutes in my new room, I took a shower and went to bed.
*THE NEXT DAY*
It was the first day for me at Lowell High School. I walked inside, down the hallway with my schedule in my hand and found my locker. I went through my backpack, looking for the items I needed for each class period and put the rest away. First class was P.E. As I went there, I saw girls playing volleyball and boys doing push-ups. They were all wearing a gray T-shirt and red shorts. A female coach gave me the gym clothes that the other students were wearing, and I went to the Girls' locker room to change. As I finished, a girl ran up to me and shouted, "Michelle, I can't believe you're actually here!"
I was wondering how did the girl recognized me.
"How do you know my name?" I said.
"You really don't remember me?" The girl looked confused.
I just found out that she was Rebecca Stephens, my childhood friend, who I haven't seen since third grade in Macon.
"Rebecca?" I said.
"Yes, it's me." She said, smiling.
We hugged and went to play volleyball along with the other girls.
I thought I'll never see one of my old friends again, but I'm glad to see Rebecca again. Having new friends won't put a smile on my face. Rebecca has blackish brown hair and light brown eyes. She's part Jewish, Swiss-Italian, and English. She was originally born in London and grew up in Macon. She's the same age as I am, but she was born a year older than me. After several class periods, Rebecca and I went to the cafeteria for lunch. We sat a small table and started eating.
"Look!" Rebecca shouted while pointing at my direction.
I turned around and saw 9 people all dressed in black and wearing shades. They all walked in from the front door of cafeteria. One of them appeared to be a handsome, black curly haired boy. The whole entire cafeteria went silent by their strange appearance. They all sat together at a big table far across from ours, without a tray of food.
They didn't take their glasses off but they were looking around.
"Who are they?" Some students said.
I looked at the one with the curly hair. He looked angry. I wondered what was on his mind, I bet it's not good. Rebecca and I looked at each other confused then continued eating.
After that, I went to Science class.
"Hello, I'm Mr. Williams and welcome to my science class." The teacher said. He handed us all a worksheet as we walked in. I sat in the back row. As Mr. Williams was finish checking our attendance, the same boy that I saw earlier walked in. All of the girls gasped and almost fainted excepted me.
"I'm sorry that I'm late for attendance sir." The boy said calmly.
"It's ok. Please introduce yourself." said Mr. Williams.
"My name is Michael Jackson and I'm very pleased to meet you all at Lowell High."
Two girls were whispering,
"He's handsome and polite."
"I know right? He's way cuter than my last boyfriend."
My heart skipped a beat as he sat across from me. I felt crazy inside by his handsome appearance up close. I can't just go around having a crush on boys because of how cute or handsome they look. I need to focus on knowing if they're good or bad.
Sometimes boys pretend to be innocent to get girls. Next thing, they turn out to be dangerous and it's too late. The only girls like is the hair, smile, and and cuteness. I'm not like that. As we were all working on our worksheet, I raised my hand.
"Yes Michelle, what is it?" Mr. Williams said.
"Sir, I forgot my notebook but it's in my locker. Can I go get it?"
Mr. Williams nodded yes. I went to my locker to get my notebook from my backpack. As soon as I closed the locker door, I turned around and the exact same boy appeared out of nowhere. I gasped as I dropped my notebook and fell down.
"Goodness!" I shouted.
"Oh, my apologies." He said as he helped me up.
"Why.....how did you..."
"I'm sorry."
He kneeled down and picked up my notebook.
"Thanks but I got it." He
"No, it's my fault. I'll do it."
"That's really nice of him," I thought. "But at least he apologized."
He handed me the notebook.
"Thanks." I said.
"Are you all right? I'm sorry for the incident." He said.
"Oh no I'm fine. I think it was just.....an accident."
"I guess so."
As I was heading back to class, I turned behind me and the boy disappeared. I mean.....how? He was suppose to go back Science class with me. Why did he have to leave so quickly? I wonder what was on his mind that made him go? I went back to class and ignored the nonsense that happened in the hall. After school, Rebecca and I were chatting while walking home. The school wasn't far from my house.
"So how was Science class?" Rebecca asked me.
"It was okay. I saw that boy there." I said.
"That boy? Who?"
The one that I saw at lunch along with those people were wearing sunglasses."
"Really? What happened?"
"Well I forgot my notebook and I was getting from my locker and as I closed the locker door, he stood right in front of me. It was scary."
