Poet.
I call myself a poet because
I am running out of identities.
My hands are empty now,
My head's a lonely graveyard;
What do you name your voids after?
I name mine after my favourite poems.
Poet.
The word comes from the aging Greek,
It comes from a word, meaning 'create'.
I look around myself, see the poems I wrote,
Sleeping beside me, snoring softly,
Their faces lit up by the streaks of light by
Sodium streetlamps, lined outside my house.
I wonder if they ever dream about me.
Poet.
It's my four-lettered word, I shout.
No one listens, but it doesn't stop me.
In a world torn in wars,
Maybe poetry is the only thing that could save us.
If only people looked up at the skies every night,
Slept with a book of ghazals under the pillow,
Whispered like poems scared
To be written on the paper,
I wonder, what would the world be like?
Glossary —
Ghazals: a form of amatory poem or ode, originating in Persian poetry. A ghazal may be understood as a poetic expression of both the pain of loss or separation and the beauty of love in spite of that pain.
