Chapter Eight

Augun had known to leave me be, and I had changed my mind about running because I did not want to get caught again and suffer a longer and worse punishment.

Eventually, I had collectedmyself and I was able to go back to Augun. He seemed rather happy that I had slapped Dargess but I still felt no emotions. Like before, my face was blank and so was my mind. I didn't know what to feel.

It hurt to know that Dargess was really a self-involved ninny, and that I still called him by his false name, but I knew that I would have to set it aside and focus on the real issues at hand.

We had traveled several miles until we came into a village. Augun ordered something in Norse and his men took off running into he town. They tore apart shops and burnt the churches. I clenched my teeth in pain as I watched it all happen. Within only a few minutes, I could not stand it anymore.

I sprinted into the village, throwing Vikings to the ground and pulling the inhabitants away. I saw the confused looks on my friends' faces as I helped people to safety.

As I opened the door to a blacksmith's shop, a firm hand grasped my shoulder. I turned around to see "Dargess", his eyes a-blaze. He pushed me down to the floor. The point of his sword felt cold against my neck. I curled up on the ground as I said a prayer.

"Please, Lord God, forgive him, for he knows not what he does or says.", I repeated. Dargess laughed and said, "Your God cannot help you now!"

"It was my understanding that he was your God too!", I yelled at him. "Oh! Was it?", he chuckled before continuing his sentence, "Well, as a member of your, or should I say, Augun's enemy clan, my plan is to kill him and take his place, so my clan may rule. You see, Norse people of high status, such as myself, do not beleive in such a God.", he pushed the sword closer to my neck.

I spat at his feet. "I was naive. I was wrong about you...and Augun was right.", I whispered. "Oh, but you love me! I recall you kissed me."

"You kissed me!"

"Well, it seems that our friendship will be ending soon, and so will you!", he said as he raised his sword to swipe at me.

I rolled over as he slashed the hay bail that I had been laying on. I got up and sprinted for the open doorway. I saw Augun turn around from what he was doing as I ran past him. I bolted into a field nearby, pulling villagers with me as I went and pushing them into the forest.

"You are a mere lass! You cannot run from me!", yelled Dargess. I watched as Augun jumped on to Dargess and began to fight with him in the middle of the main village path. I turned to help Augun who lay unconscious on the ground. Dargess was above him, his sword drawn. I put my sword up to the back of his neck.

"Surrender or die!", I ordered. He ignored my warning and turned around. He threw my sword to the ground and put his hand on my arm. Dargess began to jerk me around. Finally, I lost my balance and fell.

I slid up on my back as he walked toward me. Augun was still unconscious and could do nothing.

A rush of adrenaline filled my veins. I jumped up and punched him. He bent over in pain and I elbowed him in the back. He fell to the ground but refused to quit. In a matter of seconds he was up again.

"Just the sight of you makes me ill!", I screamed to him. He slapped me hard. I spun and hit the ground. All I could feel was the burning spot on my cheeck where his disgusting hand had hit me. His hand had felt cold when it hit me.

His blood ran cold, and mine ran mixed.
