Call of the Deep
Maya and Ray were settling into the Monastery. The change was taking some time to get used to, to say the least. Ray was settling in a bit better than Maya. Then again Ray was just minding his business. Usually playing video games with Kai and Cole. Maya on the other hand was mothering everyone and that meant everyone.
Maya had even insisted on setting a curfew for the ninja. A set time where they all had to be in their rooms. Even though all of them were legal adults.
A list of some of the things she did include but was not limited to, during meal times Maya always piled food onto Misty and Lloyd's plates saying they didn't eat nearly enough. On more than one occasion she went into the hangar bay to force Pixal to stop her inventions and go to bed at a decent time. (Regardless of the fact that Pixal did not require sleep) She made Jay clean his room and got onto Cole about eating too many sweets. Zane was the only one who escaped her mothering. But then again Zane was Zane and he needed no correction. Nya however got the worst of it, after all, Maya was there to help her daughter most of all.
~Early in the Morning~
Nya was in her room snoring away just as the sun was filtering through her blinds. She was sprawled out on her bed. Misty's chicken was sleeping at the foot of her bed. Chicken seemed to have been adjusting nicely to living with the other Ninja.
As her door slid open Maya said cheerfully "Rise and shine, sleepyhead! It's 6 A.M.! Early ninja gets the worm!" Maya was startled as she saw the state of Nya's room, which was messy. Her spears were leaning against the wall there was an empty pizza box and soda cans on the floor as well as shurikens and throwing stars scattered around the ground.
"Oh, my! Would you look at this mess. Dear, dear, dear. Okay, let's tidy this place up. A messy room makes for a messy ninja, Nya, and we are not messy ninjas. Spears belong in their racks, shurikens and throwing stars belong in the shuriken and throwing star bin -" Maya said cheerfully as she successfully started cleaning the room.
"Make it stop," Nya groaned and placed a pillow over her face but her mother continued.
"Bladed weapons don't just get stabbed into a wall, they actually have a place! And chickens do not belong indoors!" And she forced Misty's beloved Chicken out of the room. "Now this place is starting to look like something. Are you still lying there?" Maya yanked Nya out of her bed and said, "Come on, up up up, sleepyhead. I find the best way to start the day and chase away those sleeping is with a few jumping jacks! Ready set go! One - and - two - and - one - and - two - and -" as she continued counting and doing jumping jacks despite Nya flopping back down on her bed with a groan muttering, "Am I having a nightmare, or is this really happening?"
Nya pulled herself out of bed and went into the kitchen and saw her mother cooking.
"You made breakfast?" Nya said looking slightly despondent.
"Of course I made breakfast! It's the most important meal of the day! If we're going to get you back in shape and fix your life, you're gonna need your strength," Maya said smiling as she continued cooking.
"My life does not need fixing, Mother," Nya said glaring at her mother's back her voice was filled with annoyance and anger.
"That's not what your brother says. He says your powers are going haywire and you can't control water anymore," Maya corrected Nya and then said lightly, smiling to herself as she placed the plate of food down in front of Nya, "Personally, I never had that problem when I was master of water, but never fear! We'll figure it out together,"
Plate had what looked like a green pancake, and green bacon on it, "Um, why is the bacon green?" Nya said as she picked up the bacon and raised an eyebrow.
"That's not bacon, silly. It's seaweed," Maya said smiling as she held up a piece in her spoon.
"Seaweed?" Nya said sounding slightly concerned a disgusted.
"Goes great with tofu pancakes!" Maya said grinning.
Nya poked the pancakes with her fork and they made squishing sounds and she shouted, "Ew. Yeah, no!"
"And it will get you in tune with your element. Now eat up. Gobble gobble!" Maya insisted excitedly holding up a spoonful.
"No way am I eat-" Nya started to say unfortunately, Maya took the chance and shoved a spoonful in Nya's mouth before she could finish her sentence.
After the nightmare of a breakfast, Maya dragged Nya into the courtyard to help her practice she placed a pail of water in front of Nya and said simply.
"Now for some basics. Assume water stance,"
Nya started posing but was quickly interrupted by Maya who said, "No, no, no. Your form is terrible, dear. Not like that, like this!" She demonstrated herself, and Nya followed or at least tried to but was stopped by her mother again who said. "Uh-uh. Arms up,"
Nya tried it again only to hear, "Not quite," and she poked Nya with Wu's staff as Nya grew more exasperated by the minute. Back straight, plant your legs, hands up, eyes fixed, breathe in and out, in and out. Not like a Mino, dear, just like a person."
"Okay, that's it. I can't do this! My water stance is fine, Mom!" Nya shouted exasperated and to her limit.
"Well, if it was fine, you wouldn't be having all the problems you're having, dear," Maya said matter of factly.
"I'm not having problems. It was a one-time mistake, Mom. It won't happen again!" She shouted she stamped her foot angrily, which ended up causing the bucket of water to shoot into the har and then land on her soaking her thoroughly, and to add salt to the insult, the bucket fell on her head. Maya gave her an I told you so smile, and Nya groaned and stormed off angrily.
Nya sought out Wy in the library he was looking through books with Misako.
"But there has to be something you can do!" She cried desperately.
"To accomplish what?" Wu asked calmly.
"To get her to leave! She's driving me bonkers. Can't you tell her that you found a solution? That we don't need her help anymore?" Nya insisted
"I have been searching, Nya, but there's surprisingly little information on the elemental power of water. Your mother may be our best option," Wu reasoned calmly and gently handed Nya the book he had grabbed.
"She just wants to help, Nya. She's been gone a long time. She wants to be your mother, and take care of you," Miskao said kindly
Nya sighed exasperated, and said, "I know, but she's taking over. She's doing everything. She's got all this advice, all these sayings, she fed me bacon made out of seaweed!"
"Perhaps you should talk to your brother. Kai might be able to help," Wu offered as he handed her another scroll this one bound in leather.
"Kai? Kai wouldn't understand. He probably likes being waited on. I bet he loves being treated like a baby," Nya said sounding exasperated and annoyed.
"I'm sure that's not true. Kai's a grown man. Talk to your brother," Misako reasoned and she gently took the scroll and book from Nya.
Nya sighed and walked away. In the relaxation room where Kai and Ray are playing Lava Zombies.
"Oh, I got the powerup. Get ready, Dad." Kai said as he mashed the buttons on the controller.
"Roger that!" Ray said doing the same.
"Hey -" Nya started to say
"Fiya!" Both Ray and Kai shouted at the same time and high-fived, both not taking their eyes off the screen. The two seemed to be cut from the same cloth. Much like Nya and Maya but unlike them, it was a bonding experience for son and father.
"Scorcher!" Kai cheered
"Can I talk to -" Nya said but was cut off when Ray said "Oh, uh, hi Nya. We're about to break a new record. Nice move, Kai!"
"Thanks, Dad! Not as good as you, though," Kai said
Ray chuckled looking over at Kai with pride in his eyes, and said, "Ah, thanks, son,"
"Kai, can I talk to you for a sec?" Nya tried again.
"Oh, here comes the big boss! Hit him with all you've got!" Kai shouted excitedly
"Oh, take that, you big oaf!" Ray said
"I made sandwiches!" Maya sang and she slid open the door entering with a plate with several snacks on it.
"Pause! Ham and cheese sandwiches with crispy bacon?" Kai said excitedly.
"Oh, you bet!" Maya said as she placed the plate down.
"Oh thanks, Mommy! You're the best!" Kai said and he took several bites, and said, "Mm, bacon is the best too!" Maya placed a kiss on Kai's head and smiled.
Nya grimaced and left exasperatedly. In the hangar bay, Lloyd and Cole are fixing the computer. Cole was behind the computer, while Lloyd was at the keyboard.
"Okay, think I've fixed it. Try the video feed," Cole said popping up from behind the monitors.
Lloyd pressed a button and the screen came to life, "That did the trick," he said smiling.
"Can I help?" Nya asked
"Oh, thanks, Nya, but we're basically done," Lloyd said
"Where are Pixal, and Zane?" Nya asked looking around since Pixal was the one who usually did all the tech stuff.
Cole looked nervous and said, "Uh, they, um, kind of ... went on a mission,"
"Mission? Why didn't they tell me?"
Lloyd coughed and said nervous as well, "They thought it might be better to ... handle it on their own,"
"Why?" Nya asked looking confused
Cole jumped down from behind the monitors, and said as gently as possible, "It ... was a water rescue," Nya sighed and left dejectedly.
She found Misty in her room as usual carving away at a crystal block shaping it into what looked like a phoenix. She knocked on the door frame and slid open the door. Misty looked up and clicked up the lens on her glasses to see Nya better and offered her a smile.
Nya slid the door closed and sat on the edge of Misty's bed still looking as dejected as ever. Misty blew the crystal dust off the statue and then turned to Nya and said gently, "You want to talk about?"
"How...did you-" Nya paused and seemed to have to catch herself and then said, "Is this how you've felt with entire time with... your element?"
"When I was younger... and during some certain times..." Misty admitted she fiddled with the ring on her finger.
"How didn't it drive you crazy?"
"If I'm being honest you helped a lot, you never scolded me or babied me like the others. You supported my decisions, even when they didn't. Heck, you didn't even try to question me when I started wearing this thing," Misty said as she held up her hand with the ring.
Nya was silent and she said, "I was worried when you started to wear the ring... even on missions but... I knew it helped you feel safe. I trusted myself to be able and protect you if anything did happen... but now I can't even be sure I can do that-"
Misty gently squeezed Nya's hands that were in her lap and said, "You always told me this... and I knew you meant it. So know that I mean it. I promise whatever happens I'll be here to help you. It's my turn to support you," she said smiling. She gently took the crystal statue off her desk opened Nya's hand, and gently pressed it into her palm. "I promise," she repeated softly.
Nya gently ran her fingers over the small statue of the phoenix in her hand. Her fings ran over the ridges and the smooth details from the sharply carved eyes and beak to the curve of its wings and feathers. She gently held the carving to her chest in one hand and pulled Misty into a hug with the other.
Misty hugged Nya tightly her head resting on Nya's shoulder. The familiar smell of sea salt and crisp ocean air overtook Misty's senses as was usual when she hugged Nya. It was a comforting scent and a smell her brain never failed to associate with home.
