why do i still love you?
"The sun's starting to rise," Yoongi murmured to himself as he stared off into the river, noticing the cracks of pink and orange beginning to intrude the otherwise dark skies. He had no idea how long he'd been staring off into the distance— it usually happened whenever he came to Hangang Bridge. Though Yoongi could hear the sound of the cars zooming past him, it became nothing more than static noise the longer he stared at the sky.
No matter what, Yoongi always found himself coming to Hangang Bridge, his only escape from the world around him and space where Yoongi felt at ease. This was his sacred place, a place not even Jimin knew about. A solace to rid him of the uneasiness of the outside world, a place where he could finally breathe.
Most importantly, a place where he went whenever he missed Hoseok.
Yoongi could hear his phone buzzing, knowing he was receiving countless messages from his friends, as he had been for the past couple of hours. He didn't care though— didn't have the energy to, at least not yet. He was calmer now, but he knew that if he tried responding, he'd be overwhelmed.
"I thought I'd find you here."
Though the voice was far away, Yoongi could hear every syllable crystal clear. Not trusting his ears, he whipped towards the voice, eyes widening as he realized he had heard correctly. The breath left his lungs as he drunk in the familiar figure— older but just the same. Yoongi could feel his eyes beginning to water, but he blinked the tears away.
"Hoseok."
Yoongi's voice shook as he called out Hoseok's name, a name that had become so foreign in his mouth, but familiar all the same. Hoseok remained distanced, his hands stuffed in his pockets, lips pursed as he looked away.
"Your friends are worried about you," Hoseok said. "You should tell them you're okay."
"And you?" Yoongi asked, hands curling into fists. "Are you worried about me?"
"Namjoon told me to come find you," hoseok answered, ignoring Yoongi's questions. "To make sure you're okay. This was the first place I thought of. Guess you're still the same."
Yoongi scoffed, looking away for a brief moment. Of course, Hoseok wasn't looking for him because he wanted to. Not like Hoseok actually cared. If he had, he never would have left. For the first time, Yoongi couldn't figure Hoseok out. The person he thought he knew, he didn't. As far as Hoseok and Yoongi were concerned, they were just strangers.
"Does Jay care at least?" Yoongi asked, causing Hoseok to flinch. "I mean, he was always there for me."
Yoongi had just happened to like the persona Hoseok took that made him feel wanted.
"I've run out of sorry's, Yoongi," Hoseok took a step closer, leaving only a few inches between him and Yoongi. "Besides, I'm sure you wouldn't want to hear that from me."
"Oh, the constant apologies?" Yoongi retorted bitterly. "I told you already. If you don't mean them I don't want to hear it. I thought you would have gotten the hint when I blocked you the first time."
"You didn't block my main account," Hoseok said. Yoongi scoffed, crossing his arms.
"My mistake."
Everything fell into a tense, suffocating silence. After a few moments, Yoongi spoke up again, looking at Hoseok in the eyes.
"Maybe we just weren't meant for each other." Yoongi laughed humorlessly. "I mean, look at us. You're so close, but this is the farthest we've ever felt. I thought I'd be happy to see you again, but all I feel right now is dread that you are here. Why didn't you just stay away?"
That's when the tears began to fall.
"You should have stayed gone!" Yoongi burst out, pushing Hoseok away. "You left me a fucking mess! And then the second I think I'm close to finally moving on, it turns out I was just falling for you over again. You left, Hoseok!"
Hoseok staggered back at the force of Yoongi's hands, though said nothing, accepting the older's fit. Another burst of adrenaline shot through Yoongi and he edged closer towards Hoseok, using his strength to push Hoseok as hard as he could, knowing that no matter what Yoongi couldn't land a hit on Hoseok.
"All those nights of me crying over you, sleepless nights filled with broken dreams of the future that were were supposed to have together," Yoongi cried, his fingers grasping Hoseok's shirt. "Did you even feel anything when you left? I bet you were glad. You were just so tired of being with me."
"Yoongi, you know that's not true."
"Isn't it?" Yoongi said, vision becoming blurry. "You made new friends, gave yourself a new identity, and all these years you hadn't said a word. And those friends are here now, intertwined with my friends, and now you're here. Were you ever going to come back to me?"
"I-i don't know."
Yoongi let Hoseok go, turning away from him. He knew he wasn't going to get the answers he wanted and he probably never would.
God, why was Hoseok so hard to understand? Why was he so fucking indecisive and why did he have to drag Yoongi down with him.
"I should hate you." Yoongi turned back to Hoseok, jabbing a finger in Hoseok's chest. "You don't deserve me."
"I know."
"Then why are you still here?" Yoongi mumbled. "Why come back?"
Silence enveloped them, tension thick as knives. If Yoongi hadn't been staring at Hoseok so intently, even he would have missed the tears slipping out of Hoseok's eyes. His lips parted at the sight, his mind trying to remember the last time he had ever seen Hoseok cry if he'd ever seen Hoseok cry for that matter.
"Hoseok, you're crying."
Out of instinct, Yoongi reached up to wipe the tears from Hoseok's face. He knew he shouldn't be doing so, but, upon noticing that Hoseok didn't push away, he gently swiped his thumbs across Hoseok's cheeks. He couldn't help it— it was his natural instinct to want to comfort people he cared about.
"Yeah," Hoseok smiled ruefully. "It's been happening ever since I came back."
All the anger had left Yoongi at Hoseok's seemingly fragile state, the brutality of his words resonating with Yoongi. If he could hate himself for caring so much, he would, but Yoongi knew there was nothing to be done about it. He would do anything for Hoseok, even with Hoseok hurting him the way he had. Hoseok had run away, leaving Yoongi astray, but Yoongi wasn't like that. He'd never be like that.
"You cause me so much pain, Hoseok," Yoongi murmured, hands still cupping Hoseok's face. "You tore my heart to pieces when you left. You're hurting me now with your indecision. I should hate you."
But no matter how much he willed it to, Yoongi could never hate Hoseok.
"Why do I still love you?"
Yoongi's eyes searched Hoseok's face, capturing every detail, details that he had ingrained in his mind so well. Hoseok watched Yoongi's every move, noticing Yoongi's stop and hesitation as his eyes landed on his lips, eyes flickering back up. Yoongi swallowed the lump in his throat, before finally pulling Hoseok towards him.
In an instant Yoongi's heart set ablaze, only proving how much Hoseok still meant to him. The kiss stained with salty tears as they both moved against each other— almost as if their life depended on it. Yoongi could feel Hoseok's fingers threading through his hair, lips moving against his own with desperation like Yoongi could disappear at any moment.
It all still felt the same.
He still felt the same.
"You're no good for me, Jung Hoseok."
Yoongi let Hoseok go, turning back to face the water. Hoseok stood there for a few moments, before taking place beside Yoongi, looking in the same direction. The sun could be seen now— a tiny sliver in the midst of all the darkness, a sign that a new beginning was on its way.
"I don't expect you to forgive me," Hoseok said as they stared out into the sunset. "I wouldn't be able to forgive me. There's a lot we still have to talk about."
"Yeah," Yoongi echoed, fiddling with his fingers. "It's been years since we've last seen each other. I would hope we do have lots to talk about."
"You should go back to your friends," Hoseok said. "And mine. They're worried shitless, you know."
"So you've said," Yoongi responded. "And you? Are you going back?"
Hoseok laughed softly, shaking his head. "Nah, I'd rather not. I can meet you later though. Promise I won't run away."
Yoongi arched an eyebrow. "Promise?"
"I promise."
