twenty eight.
THE MOMENT
Simon Minter had his son sat beside him, it was raining outside of the car and Nathan and he were soaked. Simon had taken Nathan to his first football match, a Leeds game. He had driven all the way up there from London to see the match and Nathan had begged and pleaded to go with him.
Simon had decided that after the game he would drive to his parents house and introduce Nathan to his mother and father properly. Of course, they knew Nathan existed and they knew that their son was a father but they'd never met their first grandson.
"How did you like the game?" Simon asks Nathan smiles.
"I loved it!" Nathan says and Simon chuckles as he pulls on his seatbelt. Simon pulls off after he's sorted out Nathan. They chat about random things in the mean time, mostly about Football.
When they arrive at Simon's family home they share a small smile to each other before climbing out of the car. Simon takes Nathan's hand and guides him up the driveway to the front door. He knocks on the door and after a few moments of waiting Nick, Simon's brother, opens the door.
"Si, its been awhile!" Nick says and Simon pulls his brother into a hug.
"I've missed you," Simon says and Nick chuckles.
"So this must be Nathan?" Nick asks and Simon smiles and nods.
"This is your uncle Nick," Simon says to Nathan, introducing the two.
Nick gives a little wave to Nathan before inviting his brother and nephew into the house.
"Mom and dad are just in the living room," Nick says and Simon nods, guiding Nathan through the house he was raised in.
"Hey mom, hey dad," Simon says when he enters the living room.
"Simon! Its good to see you," His father says and Simon smiles at him.
"Its good to see you too dad," Simon nods and his mother grins.
"This must be my grandson?" Simon's mother smiles to the little boy holding onto Simon's hand with a shy smile on his lips.
"This is my son, Nathan," Simon says and he smiles at his little boy, "Its okay Nate, this is your gran and grandad,"
"Hello," Nathan says, his voice was quiet and the little boy caused a smile to erupt on his grandparents faces.
"Isn't he just adorable?" The older woman says and everyone looks round as Nick comes into the room with a smile.
"Look at this, its almost the whole family," Nick says and Simon smiles.
"Yeah, we just need Johnny," Simon says and Nathan sits down beside Simon on the sofa.
"So, Nathan, how old are you?" The boys grandad asks.
"I'm 6," Nathan says with a smile, "Daddy says I'm growing up too quickly, but I wish I was more grown,"
"Your dad is right! 6 already? Where did the years go huh?" His grandad smiles.
"So, Simon, how's work?" Simon's mother asks, smiling.
"Good, its tiring as always and sometimes its a bit much but I love my job, and we have so much planned this year, its insane," Simon explains.
"And Alex, how is she?" His mother's eyebrows raises when Simon smiles softly.
"She's still good, perfect actually, she has her new job and she loves the house and everything, its great, and its less stress with Nathan now because we live in walking distance," Simon replies and his mother just nods.
Eventually the conversation flows to other things, more centred on what Nick had been doing for the past few months in which he'd not seen Simon.
Simon and Nathan were staying the night which meant they'd have plenty of time to catch up on everything. Simon decided to FaceTime Alex about 30 minutes before Nathan was due to go to bed and he watched as Nathan recalled the football match to his mother and told him how his gran can cook too, but made sure to say she wasn't as good as her. Alex listened and smiled as her son told her about his wonderful day and then said a small goodnight to him as he climbed into bed.
"Goodnight mommy," He says and he slides under the covers. Simon say goodnight to Nathan before leaving the room with Alex still on FaceTime.
"I miss you both," Alex says and Simon smiles softly.
"I miss you too," Simon says and Alex chuckles.
"I made a big batch of cookie dough earlier and I was going to make cookies of course, but I've kinda ended up eating the cookie dough..." Alex explains and Simon laughs as he enters his old room, it still looked exactly the same as it always had.
"Honestly, you make me laugh so much, Alex. I'm glad we're best friends again," Simon smiles and Alex chuckles.
"Me too, and this time, we're actually dating," Alex smiles and Simon smiles too.
"Hey, Si," She says and Simon looks at her on the phone screen.
"Whats up?" Simon asks, voice becoming concerned and his eyebrows furrow.
"I gotta tell you something when you come back, don't stress, I mean, its not that important or anything," Alex says and Simon nods, a small smile on his lips.
"Alright, well, we'll be back in London by tomorrow evening," Simon says and Alex nods and looks at the time on her phone.
"I best go anyway, I'm meeting up with Hannah," Alex says and Simon grins.
"Bye Alex, I love you," Simon says.
"I love you too, Si, bye," She says and she hangs up the phone and places it down on the counter.
As much as she reassured Simon it was nothing to stress about- it was.
After about 30 seconds the doorbell rings and Alex jumps, hand reaching up to grab her chest. She was filled with panic. She gets up and heads over to the door, opening it to reveal Hannah holding a bottle of wine.
"Hey Han," Alex smiles inviting her friend inside.
"You good, you look stressed babe," Hannah says, placing the bottle of wine on the counter, "Want one?"
"No, no thanks, can't," Alex says and Hannah's eyes squint towards Alex and then she shrugs and grabs a glass from the cabinet.
"Suit yourself, why have you got work tomorrow?" Hannah asks and Alex sighs and takes at seat at the breakfast bar.
"No, I don't," Alex replies and Hannah pauses, lifting the bottle away from the glass and looking at the girl on the other side of the counter.
"Wait...Are you...No way...You're not?!" Hannah's voice increases in volume as she speaks, "You're fucking pregnant?!"
Alex looks away for a moment before glancing back at Hannah who had a wide smile on her face.
"I am," Alex says and Hannah walks round the breakfast bar and gives Alex a massive hug.
"I'm so happy for you! Simon is going to be so fucking happy Alex," Hannah says and Alex smiles softly.
"I hope so, I hope he's okay with it all," Alex says and Hannah nods encouragingly.
"He's gonna be mad excited! And Nathan will be so happy too, Alex," Hannah says and Alex shrugs.
"I really hope so," Alex says and she takes a deep breath as Hannah gives her another warm hug.
Hannah moves away from the hug, giving Alex a reassuring smile before whispering, "I promise,"
