nineteen.
THE MIRACLE
Alex looked at the screen in front of her, her fingers loosening the tie around her neck that complimented her school uniform.
"There you are Hughes, been lookin' everywhere for you," It was Simon Minter.
"Fuck off you were! I looked out the window not five minutes ago and you were flirting away with Patricia Cartwright!" Alex laughs and Simon sits down on the opposite side of the desk, his hands resting on the table.
"Touché, what're you doing anyway?" Simon asks and Alex looks over at him.
"Homework," She says and Simon nods.
"On a computer?"
"Its coursework," She confirms and he just nods.
"So you know how its my birthday in literally 4 days, and I'll be 17, you think we could do something fun?" Simon asks and Alex shrugs.
"Sure, what're you thinking?"
"I think we should go up to the cliffs and watch the stars? You up for that?"
"God does that mean I have to get my hiking boots out?" Alex laughs and Simon shrugs.
"I can carry you I suppose,"
"Your skinny little arms would break under my weight,"
"Fuck off! You're skinnier than me for christ sake," Simon chuckles and Alex smiles at him.
"So a night on the cliffs it is," Alex nods and Simon grins.
"Good, I'm even more excited now," He says and Alex smiles back.
"How're you finding sixth form?" Alex asks.
"Its boring as fuck, but if I can get through this then I get to uni right?" He asks and Alex nods.
"Sure, you still want to do criminology?"
"Yeah, you still want to do the English course?"
"Yeah...I do kinda' wanna' be a primary school teacher, but...I do want to be a chef- but if we get to London after uni, we'll be set, right?"
"Of course, Hughes," He says and Alex smiles at him.
"Fancy going to the beach?" Alex asks.
"And skipping tutor group? Fuck yeah!" Simon laughs and Alex logs off her computer and flicks her braid over her shoulder, picking up her satchel with the shoulder strap.
They head down the stairs and out of the school and down towards the beach. Alex and Simon had known each other for years, and nothing had ever separated them. They were best friends and nothing could stop that.
Alex looked into Joe's eyes as they lay in bed on a Saturday morning. She smiled at him, and he smiled right back before pressing a heavy kiss to her lips.
"I'm going to go get Nathan up," Alex says and Joe smiles.
"Alright babe," He says, leaning back into the bed.
Alex gets up and picks her nightgown up off the floor, wrapping it round her underwear covered body and tying the rope round her waist. She heads out of the bedroom and down the little corridor to Nathan's room. She heads inside and sees him sleeping still, his hair messy placed over his eyes.
"Nate," She whispers, walking over. She sits down on the edge of his bed and gently shakes his shoulder, causing Nathan to stir.
"5 more minutes!" He grumbles.
"Don't you wanna' go see Jenny today?" She asks and Nathan's eyes shoot open.
"Yes! 10 billion times yes!" He says and Alex chuckles.
"Get up then lazy bones!" She says and he quickly gets up and drags his mother by her hand into the kitchen.
"What do you want for breakfast?" Alex asks, leaning against the counter as Nathan sits down to watch his Saturday morning tv shows.
"Pancakes!" He claps and Alex smiles softly.
"Sure thing buddy," She says and she looks up just in time to catch Joe coming from the bedroom, his hair in a knotted mess, his glasses placed sloppily onto his face and he wore a simple pair of grey sweatpants.
"Gonna catch a shower before breakfast," Joe says, a yawn following before he slips into the bathroom.
Alex smiles to herself as she opens the fridge and takes out the pancake mix she made yesterday evening. Within 10 minutes Nathan is eating his first pancake, it was covered in honey, his second pancake came with jam.
Joe came from the shower wearing a fresh pair of joggers, his hair was equally as messy, but it wasn't as knotted as before, and his glasses were slightly steamed over.
"You look handsome," Alex comments when he's within earshot.
"And you look gorgeous," Joe replies, sitting at the kitchen island.
"Pancake?" She asks, referring to the one cooking in the pan.
"Oh defo!" He chuckles and Alex cooks Joe one. Joe spreads nutella over his and then rolls it up before eating it. Alex has two herself, both covered with sugar before having a drizzle of lemon over them- sweet and sour, all at once.
Joe and Alex smile to each other from over the countertop.
"Nathan, are you going to go get dressed?" Alex asks and Nathan groans, "And brush your teeth mister,"
"Okay mom," He mumbles before heading into the bathroom.
"I'm glad Caspar is deciding to visit," Alex says, looking at Joe.
"Oh yeah me too, honestly its gonna' be great seeing him," Joe comments and Alex nods.
"So while I'm with Nate today, you're gonna see Cas?" She asks and Joe nods.
"Yeah," He replies and Nathan comes from the bathroom and goes into his room.
Alex brushes her teeth after, then does her hair in a messy bun, the strands at the side of her face fall out. She changes into a pair of jeans, some Toms and a stripped t-shirt covered by a long, bum covering cardigan which was navy blue like the stripes on the shirt she wore. She rolled the jeans up a little and looked at Joe who wore a hoodie over some jeans and bare of converse.
"You look adorable," Joe comments and Alex rolls her eyes.
"Get outta' here!" She laughs before walking out towards the living room.
"Theres my handsome man!" Alex says, looking at Nathan who was all dressed and ready to go to see Jenny.
"Say bye to Joe," Alex says and Nathan gives Joe a hug and says goodbye before heading downstairs to get his shoes on.
"I'll see you later," Joe winks at Alex and she rolls her eyes.
"See you later," Alex says, pressing a kiss to Joe's lips before following after her son.
Alex helps Nathan get on his coat and then she leads him out the house, making sure to grab her keys as she leaves.
It took them 20 minutes to get to Diane's house. She owned a large house, but she did have 3 children- 2 boys and a girl.
"You ready?" Alex asks as they reach the front door.
"I guess," Nathan mumbles.
"Don't be nervous, I'm going to be right there with you buddy," Alex says and she smiles at Nathan before ringing the doorbell.
Diane's oldest son answers- he was 15 and he was pretty much as tall as Alex.
"Hey, I'm Alex and this is my son Nathan," Alex says and the boy nods and invites them inside.
"Mom is in the living room, let me take you," The boy says and he shuts the front door before guiding them into the living room.
It was quite a large room, one wall was entirely covered with books, they had a built in book shelf wall. They had a large TV resting on a stand and a coffee table that had two layers, the second layer filled with magazines and toys. They had two three seater sofas both facing the TV and an armchair in the corner nearer to the book wall.
"This is a gorgeous house you have Diane," Alex says when Diane walks in from the kitchen.
"Thank you dear, it's lovely to see you both, would either of you like a drink?" Diane asks.
"Tea please," Alex says and Nathan shakes his head.
"Arthur can you take Nathan up to Jennifer please?" Diane asks and the 15 year old boy nods.
"C'mon, she's just upstairs," Arthur smiles and Nathan looks at his mother who offers a reassuring smile.
Nathan heads off with Arthur while Alex follows Diane into the kitchen. The kitchen was a bit smaller and looked quite old fashioned, but never the less it looked amazing and suited the house.
"One tea coming right up," Diane smiles and Alex smiles back.
"So, tell me a bit about yourself, Alex," Diane says and Alex chuckles.
"God, thats a hard question, there really isn't much to tell," Alex says and Diane laughs.
"Sure there is, you're 23 right?" Diane replies and Alex nods as Diane gestures to the sugar and milk.
"2 sugars and a dash of milk, please?" Alex says and Diane nods.
Diane passes her the cup of tea and Alex smiles.
"Thank you," Alex smiles and Diane leads her into the living room. They sit down on one of the sofas and Diane turns to Alex.
"So, lets hear it," Diane smiles and Alex chuckles.
"Well, I best start with Nathan, because he is my life really," Alex says and Diane grins.
"Go ahead," Diane says, "I love listening to peoples stories,"
Alex looks down at her tea before speaking, "Well, I guess it all began when I met Simon Minter,"
