THE MIRACLE

She was sat in the second row of the church. Honestly, Alex was nervous. Simon was stood at the alter and they'd just been told that Katie was outside.

Suddenly the music starts and Alex stands up, she looks at Simon first, she could see he was nervous, his fingers opening and extending outwards then clenching back.

Eventually she joins everyone else in looking over their shoulders. There was Nathan walking with one of the flower girls, the ring box in his hand as he walked. The mother of the bride and the bridesmaids came next before the bridesmaid and finally the bride, her father's arm wrapped around hers.

"She looks gorgeous," Says Hannah from beside her.

"She does," Alex mutters, turning her attention to Nathan who was now standing beside her. She takes his hand and smiles at her little boy.

"I'm so proud of you," She whispers and Nathan smiles sweetly to his mother.

Katie and her father pass by and she watches as her father kisses her cheek before giving his daughters arm to Simon.

He nods to them before joining his wife and standing with water filled eyes.

The ceremony begins, Alex blocks most of it out, her eyes focusing on something in the distance.

"Is there anyone who believes there to be reason as to why these two should not be married, speak now or forever hold your peace," The priest says loud and clear.

Alex's skin crawls, her eyes flickering over Simon and she looks at her son. She gulps back the lump forming in her throat and holds her breathe.

"Very well, on with the service," The priest smiles and Alex exhales deeply, her eyes filled with water.

"Do we have the rings?" The priest asks eventually and Alex gives her son a smile before he gets up and walks forwards.

He stands beside Simon and Katie and opens up the box. Katie takes out the ring and places it on Simon's finger.

"I give you this ring as a symbol of my love, honour and respect for you," Katie says, smiling at Simon.

He takes the ring from Nathan and nods, so Nathan can return to his seat.

"I give you this ring as a symbol of my love, honour and respect for you," Simon smiles and he places the ring on Katie's finger.

Alex pulls her son closer to her, holding him tightly as she watched the priest grin.

"You may kiss the bride," The priest says and Simon and Katie smile before pressing their lips together to symbolise the start of their marriage.

Everyone was smiling, everyone but Alex, Hannah and Nathan. Once the ceremony was over everyone poured out of the church and the photographer started to take the photos outside. Nathan and Simon have a photo together and then Simon requests that he, Alex and Nathan have one together, so Simon picks Nathan up onto his hip and smiles to the camera. Once the photo is done Simon puts down Nathan and gives Alex a shaky smile.

"You good?" Simon asks and Alex nods with watery eyes.

"I'm...I'm proud of you," Alex whispers and Simon pulls her into a tight hug. The photographer takes a photo and Simon chuckles when Alex tuts, drying her eyes as they pull apart.

"I'll see you at the reception," Alex says and Simon nods.

"I'll see you at the reception," He replies and Alex takes Nathan's hand and walks with him and Hannah towards Hannah's rental car. As they climb into the car, Alex looks over her shoulder and sees Simon and Katie kissing for a photo, and it only makes the tears that had formed fall down her cheeks.

"And now, from a friend of the groom," Says a woman, tapping the glass to gain everyones attention. Alex smiles at the woman and looks at the folded piece of paper on the table.

She looks up at Simon and unfolds the paper.

"Simon Minter," She smiles, looking from the paper to Simon, "How do I even begin to describe you in a way thats not cliche or too overthought? Well, needless to say its impossible not to do so. As you are my light in darkness, and you are what makes my world turn. You are too kind for your own good, you're caring and honest, and just to let you know, in case you hadn't realised already, you're pretty funny,"

Simon chuckles, his eyes completely focused on Alex, he doesn't even register Katie slipping her hand into his.

"So when I say that Simon Minter is best possible friend I could ever wish for, I mean it wholeheartedly. I will stand by that for my whole life. Simon Minter is the father of my beautiful son, who was lucky enough to carry the rings today. If me and Simon hadn't of made the mistakes we did, I'm sure we would not be as successful in our life as we are now. So this is my chance to say that those so called mistakes, can actually make miracles," Alex smiles through her forming tears.

"Believe it or not, the first time I saw Simon after 6 years I questioned why I had left it so long, to welcome an old friend back. But because he was and always will be my best friend, I let him leave 6 years ago without him even knowing I was pregnant because I wanted the best for Simon, for my friend. And I think I was wrong. I should have told you. Because maybe we would have been on a different path right now. But I just wanted the best for you, and I wanted you to succeed even when I could not. So, Simon Minter, I will always, truly, completely love you,"

Simon was speechless, and so was everyone else. Hannah had gasped and Nathan had grinned. It was all coming out now, and it was the best and worst feeling Alex had ever experienced.

"As a friend," She smiles fakely, her eyes filled with tears.

She raises her glass of champagne, "A toast, to Simon Minter and Katie...Katie Minter,"

She says and everyone raises their glasses. She knocks back the whole thing and then sits down, her mind going blank.

A few more speeches are made before the party properly starts, and Katie and Simon take to the floor to share their first dance.

Everyone at the event create a circle round them as they spin round together, smiling as they stare into each others eyes.

Katie Minter. It didn't sound right when it rolled off Alex's tongue. But she couldn't complain. She was too late to do anything now. She had run out of miracles.
