THE MISTAKE

Alex stared at the screen on her laptop.

"Mommy?" She hears from the sofa.

"Yes, Nate?" Alex replies, looking over the top of the computer screen at her son.

"I think I'm in love," He whispers, its almost unable to be heard, even in a silent room.

"What?" Alex asks, a small smile appearing on her lips.

"I'm being serious," He says, sitting up, so his arms fold over, resting on the back of the sofa, his eyes looking dead into his mothers.

"Well, who do you love?" She asks, the words feel wrong as she speaks them.

"A girl named Jenny, she's got brown hair and these green eyes that have a brown ring round the centre, kinda like yours...She's pretty too, I spend as much time as possible with her," He says and Alex gulps.

"Thats really cute, Nathan, why don't you invite her round?" She says and Nathan's mouth opens in a toothy grin.

"Can I really?" He asks and Alex nods.

"Of course, who am I to stop young love?" She chuckles and Nathan rolls his eyes.

"Don't embarrass me mom," He says, his cheeks blushing.

Alex smiles, before her attention is caught by a notification on her laptop.

New Message from: Simon Minter.

She opens the message, scanning through it.

Simon: I really want to meet up with you, so I'm coming back for a few days, I'm going to bring Katie and you can meet her. Say, you never told me if you have a man now? Hows work and everything? I'm looking forward to seeing you Alex. I'm coming next tuesday till the friday, hope you can at least meet up with me once xx

Alex gulps back tears, her eyes scan the message again.

Suddenly Nathan is by her side, and he's looking at the message too.

"Who's that mom?" He questions, looking at his mother with his big, curious blue eyes.

"One of mommy's old friends sweetie," She says, looking at her son.

"Oh...So he's coming to see us?" Nathan asks and Alex nods.

"Well, actually, he doesn't know you at all, but...I'm sure we can introduce you," Alex says, blinking, attempting to hide the tears.

"Who is Katie? Is that the girl he loves?" Nathan asks and Alex nods.

"Yes, yes it is, he loves her so much he's marrying her," Alex says through gritted teeth.

"Oh, thats cool, will we go to the wedding?" Nathan smiles, looking hopeful.

"Maybe darling, we'll see, now I'm sure I saw homework in your bag?" Alex says, ruffling his blonde hair.

"Ugh...Its geography work mommy, you know how much I hate geography," He says and Alex allows a small smile, remembering how much Simon hated geography.

"I'll help you out, go and get it and we can do it together," She says and Nathan grins, clapping.

He runs off to his room.

Alex holds her shaking fingers over the keyboard, she reaches for a key to type, but sees Simon is already typing.

Simon: I can see you online??? You okay? Or are you busy and have left this open? How about we skype or something? Then you can meet Katie?

Alex: Sorry, kinda busy, helping someone with a geography problem.

Simon: God, I hate geography, even now! I bet you're still good at it though, you were the only reason I passed that test.

Alex: I'd love to meet Katie btw. I should be free at some point next week to see you both.

Simon: Great, its settled then, I'll see you in a week, keep in touch over this week though!

Nathan sat down next to Alex at the kitchen island, pushing the sheet of paper towards her. She scans her eyes across Simon's last message before shutting the laptop and pushing it aside. She spends 30 minutes helping Nathan with his homework before she hears the doorbell ring.

"I'll get it!" Nathan says and Alex grabs his arm.

"I will," She says and Nathan pouts at her.

She gets up and heads downstairs, Nathan waiting at the top of the stairs to see who it is.

Alex looks through the peep hole and sees Hannah standing their looking rather impatient.

Alex opens the door and smiles at her best friend.

"Afternoon," Hannah says, walking past Alex and into the house.

"Afternoon, whats got you looking so angry?" Alex asks, following Hannah upstairs into the flat.

"Jeremy blew me off again," She says, seeing Nathan perched at the top of the stairs.

"Auntie Hannah!" He says and Hannah grabs him, and pulls him into her arms, swinging him round gently.

"Jeremy is an....an arsehole!" Alex says, and Nathan points at her.

"Another pound for the jar!" He says and Hannah chuckles as she watches her friend take out a pound from her purse. Alex slots the coin into a jar and turns round to look at Hannah.

"Seriously though, Hannah you need to drop him, he's just messing you about," She says and Hannah sits down at the kitchen island.

"Nate, why don't you go play, and leave the adults to have their boring, long conversations?" Alex asks and Nathan smiles sweetly.

"Okay mommy," He says before heading off to his room.

"So, whats up with you?" Hannah asks and Alex pulls the laptop in front of Hannah and opens up the screen.

"Oh...My...God, is this...He's getting married? What the fuck Alex...And you're just going to meet with him like its nothing?" Hannah asks, trying to keep her voice down.

"I don't....I don't know Hannah, its just one giant mess, and its all my fault," Alex says and Hannah shakes her head and pulls her friend closer, hugging her tightly.

"I can look after Nate when you go to meet them," Says Hannah and Alex shakes her head.

"I'm going to meet Simon, alone, and tell him," Says Alex and Hannah breathes in deeply.

"Really? Alex, are you sure?" Hannah asks and Alex nods.

"I'm positive," says Alex, looking at the drawing on her fridge, "Its not just for me, its so that Nathan can have a father,"
