THE MISTAKE
Today was the day. She was stood in the train station awaiting the arrival of her old best friend and his fiancé. Referring to Katie as his fiancé felt wrong to Alex.
She stood there, watching as the train pulled in. She could feel her heart beating out of her chest, her palms were sweating, and her eyes were watering. She was filled with excitement and anxiety.
Eventually the doors open and off steps a gorgeous girl. She flicks her hair over her shoulder, her eyes glisten in the light. Her hair was golden, her eyes bright blue and her lips plump and decorated in a deep shade of pink.
Alex gulps. That must be her, that must be Katie. As if on cue the boy Alex hadn't seen in person for 6 years.
He holds a suitcase in his hand and his sea blue eyes scan across the platform before landing on Alex.
She blinks in awe, he still looked as good as he did 6 years ago, just older, and taller.
Simon drops his suitcase and runs full force towards Alex.
She grins, opening her arms a little and suddenly his body connects to hers, his arms swooping her up into a hug.
She pulls her feet up off the floor and puts her arms round his neck, closing her eyes as she hugs her tightly. She had never been hugged like that before.
Simon slowly puts her down and he moves away.
"God I've missed you, Alex Hughes," He says, the smile on his face the same as it always had been.
"And I've missed you too, Simon Minter," Alex says, smiling at him. She looks behind him and sees Katie standing with a sweet smile on her face, a hand resting gently on her hip as she looked at the scene before her.
"Anyone would think this was your fiancé," She says, walking forward.
"You must be Katie," Alex says, giving the taller girl a soft smile.
"And you must be Alex," She answers and Alex nods.
"Nice to meet you," Alex says and Katie shakes her offered hand.
"Nice to meet you too," Katie says, pulling her hand away.
Simon was grinning from ear to ear as he looked at Alex.
"God I missed you," Simon says again and Alex smiles back.
"I missed you too, Simon," She replies and she leads them out of the train station. They only had a short walk to get to the village centre.
"Look at this view, I have missed this," Simon says, eyes scanning every inch of the scene before him.
"Are we walking to the hotel?" Katie asks, looking down at the wedge sandals she had on her feet.
"Yeah, I don't find the need for a car here, its all so close together," Alex says and Katie rolls her eyes when Alex has her back turned.
"Lets get going then," Simon says and he walks side by side with Alex, causing Katie's blood to boil. He was paying zero attention to her, and she knew she couldn't stand that for long.
Katie follows slowly, pushing her sunglasses up to sit on top of her head, her iPhone 7 plus sitting in her hand.
Simon and Alex begin to chat about the town, Simon interested in talking about Alex and her family.
"So, are you seeing anyone?" Simon asks and Alex shakes her head.
"No, no I'm not..." Alex says and Simon nods, smiling softly.
"Oh...Well I'm sure there will be someone someday, huh?" Simon says, "I never thought I could find someone, doing the job I do, I'm mostly inside all the time, but I found Katie, she's my rock, you know?"
Alex nods, smiling. She didn't really care much for Katie already, she seemed quite rude and quite possessive, but Alex would give Katie a chance at least.
"Why don't we stop by your parents house?" Simon asks, recognising the roads around them.
Alex's eyes widened, she looked at her watch.
Nathan would still be at her parents house.
"My parents aren't in at the minute, they're at work I believe," Alex says and Simon nods.
"Oh alright," Simon says and he points towards a cafe, "Shall we?"
"Yes, lets," Katie says from behind, pushing past both of them and going inside.
Alex and Simon follow. Katie walks up to the counter and asks for some kind of fancy coffee thing and the woman behind the counter raises an eyebrow.
"Listen honey, you look like you just stepped off a plane from LA, and we don't do whatever the hell you just asked for. We do coffee or tea," Says the woman and Alex walks forwards and smiles towards her.
"Hannah," Alex says and Hannah turns to catch sight of her best friend.
"Hey Alex," Says Hannah and Alex smiles.
"This is Simon, the friend I was telling you about," Alex introduces the tall blonde boy, "And this is his girlfriend, Katie,"
"Fiancé," Katie says and she throws Alex a dirty look.
"Nice to meet ya' both," Hannah says and Katie frowns.
"We'll have a pot of tea please, Han," Alex says and Hannah nods.
Alex leads Katie and Simon to sit down.
They sit round a table and Alex smiles.
"How did you two meet?" Alex asks and Katie takes Simon's hand.
"It was beautiful- we were both out with our separate friendship groups, and then Simon came over and asked me to dance, as a dare, and it just spiralled from there, I love him, with all my heart," Katie explains.
Alex smiles softly, her eyes looking towards Simon.
"I love you too," Simon answers, pushing his lips softly onto Katie's.
Alex looks away, seeing Hannah bringing over the tea.
Suddenly the door opens and the bell above the door rings.
Alex looks round and the horror is evident on her face.
"Is that Mr and Mrs Hughes?" Simon asks, standing up and smiling.
"Simon, hello!" Mrs Hughes says, looking at Alex, who was shaking her head at her subtly.
Mrs Hughes looks at Hannah who was supposed to be taking Nathan off them.
"Hannah, Nathan here-"
Alex looks round at Simon who had his eyes fixed on the little blonde boy, with the sea blue eyes.
"Babysitting now huh?" Simon asks, walking over to Mr and Mrs Hughes.
"Yeah, yeah we just look after him for the neighbours, but Hannah is the usual babysitter," Mr Hughes says and Alex doesn't look at Nathan.
"I wanna go home now, to see mom," The little boy says and Simon looks round at Alex.
"Hey, Alex, have you seen this little guy, he looks just like me," Simon chuckles and Alex shuts her eyes and slowly turns around, standing up and looking at Nathan.
"How about I take him? I can look after him," Alex says and Nathan smiles widely.
"Mo-"
"Nathan," Alex says and she offers his hand, "Sorry to cut this short, but I'm going to take Nathan out,"
"Okay, well, I'll see you soon," Simon says and Alex smiles.
She turns round and hugs Simon, and he hugs back.
She lets go and takes Nathan's hand, guiding him out of the cafe, everyone watching.
As they walk down the street, Nathan holding Alex's hand, the tears start again, rolling down her cheeks.
"Don't be upset mommy," Nathan says, looking up at his mother.
Alex immediately wipes the tears away and shakes her head.
"I'm not," She lies.
"Who was that man? Granny said it was your old friend? He said he looked like me, why mommy?" He questions and Alex stops, leaning down to her son.
"That was Simon Minter, and he used to be my best friend, and you...You do look like him, you look like him more than you look like me for gods sake," Alex says and Nathan tilts his head.
"Mommy," Nathan says and Alex pulls him into a hug.
"Is that man my daddy?"
"Yes," Alex whispers and Nathan only hugs her tighter.
"Does he know mommy?"
"No sweetie, but we'll tell him, we'll tell him together, okay?" Alex says, moving away.
"Okay," He whispers.
Alex kisses Nathan's forehead, before moving away and looking at those sea blue eyes she was all too familiar with.
