THE MIRACLE
She stood around the corner, she was doing her best not to attract attention to herself as she cried, the sound of people laughing in the main hall was loud enough to block out her sorrowful sobs. She was trying to calm down as she pressed her back against the wall, that on the opposite side had Simon and Katie Minter dancing together.
This was not the ideal place to have a breakdown, but she had been holding her love for Simon inside since she was 14 years old. She could hear someone coming her way, so she pressed herself against the wall and watched as Nathan and Hannah appeared.
"Mom?" Nathan asks and Alex holds her breath, she didn't want her son to see her in such a state.
"Is everything okay out here?" It was Simon.
"We lost mom," Nathan says and Hannah chuckles, ruffling Nathan's blonde hair.
"I'm sure she's absolutely fine, and she's just in the toilet or something," Hannah says and she takes Nathan's hand and pulls him past Simon back into the main hall.
Simon stays for a moment, one hand in his trouser pocket and the other running over his face. Alex lets out a small sigh after holding her breath and she watches as Simon heads for the stairwell. Being curious as to what he's doing she wipes her eyes and follows him.
She follows closely behind as he travels up the stairs all the way to the roof, which wasn't actually supposed to be accessed.
She stands in the doorway, the cool wind biting at her skin as she looks out at Simon. He was stood looking over the roof, looking at London city at night. Alex steps out and makes sure the door is left on the latch.
"What're you doing out here?" She asks causing Simon to jump.
"Could ask you the same thing," Simon replies looking over his shoulder for a short second.
"Touché," Alex says, walking forwards to stand beside him.
"Please tell me I haven't made another mistake in marrying Katie?" Simon asks, his eyes not shifting from the skyline as he speaks.
"What?" Alex asks, slightly shocked by his question.
"Your speech, it made me...It made me think," He says and Alex feels the lump in her throat forming.
"Simon, you just got married today you can't already be questioning it," Alex says, "Give it a year at least for god sake,"
"But Alex, I feel like it was meant to be you that walked down the aisle, not Katie," Simon says and Alex places her hands over Simon's, resting them on the wall.
"She has loved you for 4 years. Where have I been in 6 years Simon?" Alex asks and Simon looks from their hands to her eyes.
"Raising our son, allowing me to be successful even when you hadn't had that chance- you said it yourself," He says and Alex looks down at the road below.
"Listen, I listened to every word you said, I took it all in. It was like listening to poetry or a really good book, or observing art or music. What you said stayed with me, and to be honest, I will always, truly, completely love you too,"
Alex's eyes moved to look at Simon and she pulled her hands away from him.
"I'm not doing this now Simon. You're probably just drunk or not thinking properly. You married today, you married the girl of your dreams today," Alex says and Simon shakes his head.
"No, Alex, I just made another mistake when I went through with it. It should have been you, it should have been us. It should have been Alex Minter," He whispers and Alex steps back. Suddenly the roof door swings open and there stands Josh.
"Josh, hey," Alex smiles. Josh returns the gesture and walks towards Simon.
"Simon?" He asks and Simon turns, eyes looking Alex up and down before he turns to Josh.
"Whats up man?" Simon asks and Josh looks over at Alex sceptically.
"Katie asked me to come find you," Josh says and Simon nods.
"Alright, me and Alex were just talking about Nathan and how me having him over weekends and stuff will work now I'm with Katie," Simon lies and Josh nods.
"Sure, well, you coming down now?" Josh asks and Simon smiles.
"Of course," He says and he looks at Alex, "You coming?"
"I guess," She whispers and follows after the two men.
They enter back into the main hall and Nathan rushes over to Alex and hugs his mother tightly.
"Are you okay?" She asks and Nathan nods as he hugs her.
"I was wondering where you went?" Nathan asks and Alex runs a hand through his hair.
"I was just talking with your dad on the roof," She tells him and Nathan sighs.
"Will it be different now daddy is married?" Nathan asks and Alex looks at Simon who was now kissing his wife.
"Yes...Yes it will, but I'll always love you, and your father will always love you, so no matter who we're with or what we're doing you're going to be by at least one of our sides, okay?" Alex says and Nathan nods, yawning.
"You tired little one?" Alex asks and Nathan shakes his head even though it was evident he was sleepy.
"Lets go up to the hotel room then," Alex says and she looks at Hannah who was chatting to JJ.
"Hannah I'm gonna take Nathan to bed," Alex says and Hannah nods and smiles.
"See you in the morning," Hannah says and JJ gives Alex a smile too before reengaging Hannah in conversation.
Alex takes Nathan's hand and says night to Simon and Katie before taking him upstairs to their room via the elevator.
Alex lets them both in using her keycard and she looks at the two single beds.
"Right, go and get your pjs on and then we can sleep," Alex says and she rubs her hand on the back of her neck, attempting to relieve some of the stress.
"Okay mommy," He says and he collects his pyjamas from their little suitcase and he goes and changes in the bathroom.
Once he's done he climbs into bed and Alex passes him his teddy bear.
"Goodnight my little prince," She says and Nathan smiles back at her.
"Goodnight mommy," He says and she places a kiss on his forehead before pulling the quilt up over his shoulders and she sits down on her own bed.
She sighs deeply, the whole day had been a mess.
Alex changes into her pyjamas in the bathroom and brushes her teeth before climbing into her own bed. She turns on the tv in the hotel room and listens to the quiet shitty tv show that was on until finally she drifted off into sleep, the day was finally over.
______________
Let me know what you thought in the comments, do you think its too late for Simon & Alex?
Also I will be adding a bonus track to the playlist you all saw at the beginning of the book which will be Ed Sheeran's new song- Castle on the Hill because I feel like it goes with the book quite well (the other song, Shape of You, also goes but I think the other one goes a little better)
Thanks for reading!
