THE MIRACLE

Alex Hughes walked along the sidewalk, her hands tucked neatly into her coat pockets. She was picking Nathan up today, rather than making Simon bring Nathan to her, she and he decided that this time she would pick him up. She had rode the train down with Joe who was going to spend some time with his friends Caspar, Oli, Jack, Conor, Josh and Mikey.

She arrives at the apartment block and heads up the stairs towards Simon's front door. She knocks softly and waits for an answer, hearing some kind of an argument inside.

"Oh fuck you then Simon!" She hears and suddenly the front door swings open and Katie storms out, pulling a small suitcase along with her, her phone in hand and her eyes red and puffy from crying.

"Well, that was one hell of an exit," Alex says and Simon looks at her blankly.

"I hope Nathan's alright after all that screaming," Alex says, walking into the apartment and seeing Nathan curled up in a ball, sitting on an armchair.

"Mom!" Nathan exclaims, getting up quickly and running towards her, his arms wrapping around her tightly.

"Hey buddy," She says, hugging him back.

"He's been good all weekend," Simon says, rubbing his sleepy eyes.

"Are you okay?" Alex asks and Simon looks round and shrugs.

"As okay as I can be," Simon says and Alex looks down at her son.

"Go get your things sweetheart," Alex says and Nathan nods and runs off to collect his bags.

"Married life not going quite as planned huh?" Alex asks and Simon keeps his gaze focused away from her.

"No, I guess you could say that," Simon says, "I think we both married the wrong person, Katie..."

"Whats she done Simon?" Alex asks and she leans a little closer.

"She's pregnant," Simon says and Alex looks away.

"Fuck sake, I thought you learnt your lesson since-"

"I did...I used protection...She's been seeing someone else," Simon says and Alex gulps, a lump forming in her throat.

"Why?" Alex asks, "Why would she do that?"

"Because she's a lying little whore," Simon says, ending his comment just as Nathan comes back into the room.

"Daddy I've lost my Kylo Ren figure," Nathan says, pulling on his fathers hand.

"I'll come help look for it," Simon says and he follows his son into his bedroom.

Alex takes the time to breathe, her eyes scan the room, she sees a smashed glass on the countertop, a cracked photo frame on the mantlepiece and wilted flowers on the window ledge. The place looked isolated, dead even.

She walks forwards and used a dust ban and brush to clean away the broken glass, throwing it into the bin. She walks over to the mantlepiece and sees the cracked photo frame holds a picture from the wedding day, Simon was holding Katie from behind and she was looking up into his eyes, his eyes fixed on hers. It brings a weak smile to Alex's face, though she was unable to think up a reason for the small smile.

"There we go," Simon says, guiding Nathan back into the room, Nathan holding his figurine in his hand.

"I cleaned the broken glass off the counter for you," Alex says quietly to Simon and he smiles.

"Thank you Alex," He says and Alex looks at Nathan.

"Ready to go?" Alex asks and Nathan nods.

Alex takes his spare hand and leads him to the door.

"You'll be okay, right?" Alex asks Simon over her shoulder.

"Yeah...yeah, yeah sure," He says and Alex looks at him sceptically.

"You're lying," Alex says and Simon breathes in deeply.

"Honestly, I don't know anymore Alex, I'm just...I'm lost," He says and Alex looks at Nathan.

"Just go with your gut," Alex says and Simon nods, his eyes looking at Nathan.

"I'll see you later little man," Simon says and Nathan gives his father a huge hug.

Alex says bye to Simon and leads Nathan out of the apartment.

They give Simon a wave before heading out of view.

"How about we do something special for daddy?" Alex asks and Nathan grins.

"Yes please!" He claps and Alex chuckles softly.

"We need a store, one that'll sell a-"

"Theres a Ikea a few minutes away," Nathan cuts in and Alex smiles.

"Sounds perfect," She says and she takes Nathan's hand, leading him towards the store.

They head inside the shop and look round for the gift that would hopefully cheer up Simon. Eventually Nathan spots one and leads Alex over. She picks up the box and takes it to the till. She buys the gift and her and Nathan head back towards Simon's apartment.

She knocks on the front door and after a few moments Simon opens the door.

"Did you forget something else?" Simon asks with a soft smile and Nathan shakes his head.

"Close your eyes!" Nathan says quickly and he takes Simon's hand and guides him to the sofa where he used his own hands to cover Simon's eyes.

Alex sets up the gift, plugging it in and flicking it on.

"Open them!" Alex and Nathan say in unison and Simon opens his eyes to see the brightly lit object on his coffee table.

"Oh wow," Simon says, looking at Alex.

"Thats pretty cool," Simon chuckles and he leans forward and used his hand to spin the globe on its axis.

"Do you like it?" Nathan asks and Simon nods.

"Of course I do," He says, behind his eyes his mind flickered with memories of Alex's globe- how they used to spin it, close their eyes and jab their finger down, forcing it to land on a specific place.

"I thought...You know, you said you felt lost, so I thought I'd get you something that would show you exactly where you are, and exactly where you could go," Alex says and Simon smiles, spinning the globe again.

"Its amazing, thank you," Simon smiles and Alex smiles back.

"Good, glad you like it," Alex says and Nathan grins.

"But this time we really do have to go," Alex says and Nathan smiles.

"Are we picking up Joe on the way?" Nathan says.

Alex glances at Simon to see he's already looking at her and she looks back at Nathan quickly.

"Yeah," Alex says and Nathan smiles widely.

"I'll see you later then," Simon says and he walks them to the door for the second time.

"Bye Nate," Simon says, hugging his son again.

"Bye daddy," Nathan says and Alex takes her sons hand again.

"Bye Simon," She says and Simon smiles weakly at her.

"Bye Alex," He whispers, watching the two most important people in his life, walk away.
