THE MISTAKE

She sat with the baby resting on her chest. Her heart beating softly as the little boy slept. He was 5 months old, and he rarely slept, so Alex was taking the time to relax. Her light up globe was sat on the beside table. She spins it, closing her eyes and slowly pushing her finger against it.

"London," She breathes out. She wanted to move to London. Its where her best friend was, its where her dreams wanted to take her, but she never got there, because of a stupid mistake.

The baby on her chest begins to stir, his eyes opening up. She looks down at him, those sea blue eyes making contact with hers.

"What am I going to do with you huh?" She asks, the baby was her life now. Everything was about Nathan now. Everything revolved around this little baby.

Alex looked down at the little boy that was lying on her chest, his body beside hers. He looked so innocent and peaceful as he slept. It was a Friday evening and Simon was set to arrive in an hour. Alex had agreed to Simon having Nathan for the weekend. This would be the first time in 6 years that Nathan could be properly away from Alex. He would be miles away and Alex wasn't sure how to feel about that idea.

Alex and Nathan lay there for another 30 minutes before Alex woke Nathan up gently and told him to pack an overnight bag.

Alex then helped him pick a few toys to take which included some Star Wars figures and his favourite teddy bear.

Nathan pulls his backpack over his shoulders and sits at the kitchen island. Alex smiles at him when the doorbell rings and Nathan jumps up and runs downstairs.

He opens the door and there stands his father.

Simon opens his arms and embraces his son in a warming hug, holding him tightly.

Simon picks him up and carries him with a hearty smile upstairs to his mother.

Simon puts him down and smiles at Alex, his eyes scanning over her. Her hair was pulled up in a messy bun, small strands of hair falling down her delicate face. She wore a blue shirt that was slightly too big and black leggings with a pair of Vans.

Alex scanned Simon up and down too, his hair pushed back as usual and a hoodie was pulled over his head, a pair of black joggers and some Adidas Superstars. She smiled when he looked at her and he returned the gesture.

"So, ready go?" Simon asks the little boy.

"Of course," He replies and Alex looks at them.

"I'll walk you to the train station," Alex says and Simon smiles.

Alex pulls on her coat and grabs her keys, taking her sons hand into hers.

Nathan takes Simon's hand too, making them look like a happy family as they walk up to the train station.

Simon buys the tickets and then turns to see Nathan still latched onto his mother, his arms round her in a tight embrace.

Simon walks over and he places a hand on the boys shoulder.

"Train's gonna' arrive in about 5 minutes," Simon says and Alex looks at him.

"You've got my number, so text or call if you need me, he should be good, if he's not, let me know...Look after him, and make sure he's okay," Alex says and Simon nods.

"I'll take good care of him, Alex, I swear," He says and Alex smiles softly.

The train pulls up to the station, allowing the passengers to get off.

"Train to London boarding now," The announcer says and Nathan looks up at his mother.

"I love you," He says and Simon watches with a weak smile.

"I love you too," Alex says, giving her son one las hug, practically squashing him, before placing a kiss on his forehead.

"Have fun you two!" Alex chuckles and she looks up at Simon.

Nathan takes his fathers hand and Simon leans down to Alex, placing a soft kiss on her cheek.

"See you on Sunday," He says and she nods.

She watches them board the train and they sit at the window.

The train pulls away and she waves them goodbye, and they wave back.

Long after the train has pulled away she turns around, heading out of the station. She had a weekend to herself, and for the first time in 6 years she felt truly alone. So she decided the best thing to do was to return to her childhood home.

She heads down into the little seaside town and finds her parents house. She unlocks the door and heads inside.

"Mom? Dad?" Alex calls and she hears a mumble from the kitchen.

She heads inside and sees her mother cooking dinner.

"Hey!" Alex says and her mother looks round with a wide smile.

"Hey darling," She says and Alex breathes in the delicious scent coming from the cooking food.

"No Nathan?" Her mother asks and she shakes her head.

"He's having a weekend in London, would you believe? With his father," Alex tells her and her mother looks sceptical.

"Why is his father so suddenly interested?" Her mother asks, leaning her back against the kitchen counter.

Alex sighs, looking at her mother, "I contacted him, you know this mom, I want them to spend time together, Nathan deserves a father,"

"Okay, as long as you're okay with it and everything, are you feeling okay? I know its hard to let your child leave like that," Her mother says and Alex shrugs.

"Its not like he's leaving forever, its only a weekend," Alex says, seeing her father coming in from the living room.

"Hey dad," Alex says and her father grins.

"Hey poppet, no Nate?" He asks and Alex goes to speak, but her mother beats her to it.

"He's in London, with his father," Her mother says icily.

"Oh, thats great, the little rascal deserves some father time, eh kid?" Alex's father smiles at Alex, attempting to make his daughter feel better.

Paul and Rachel Hughes had been married since they were 26 years old, and they had never had doubts about their marriage. Alex looked up to them, she'd always dreamed of getting married in her 20's, preferably to Simon Minter, but if not, whoever she decided to choose. She had loved Simon since she turned 15, well she most likely loved him before then, but simply dismissed such emotion. Paul Hughes had been a mechanic all his life, since he turned 18 and got an apprenticeship. Her mother was from Cambridge, and she even studied at the Cambridge University, she studied Veterinary medicine. Her mother owned her very own Veterinary surgery just a few minutes down the road and her father was a mechanic for the local garage. They both earned a lot of money, they could have left here if they wanted to- but something held them back, something stopped them from leaving.

Paul and Rachel only had one child, she was their golden girl, Alex Hughes was the perfect child. She was gorgeous, smart and lighthearted. She loved her life, and that meant the world to her parents. Rachel and Paul supported Alex through her childhood, they raised their daughter right, teaching her all she would need to go forth into the big, wide world. But then Alex made a mistake, she got pregnant. She had a baby at the age of 17 and her dreams were shattered, split in two. The father was gone, he didn't even know she was pregnant. It broke her parents. But they were proud of their daughter, their golden girl. They were proud of her for working her way up her job, for raising a beautiful son and for getting her own place to live. Her mother never fully felt the same connection to her daughter after the mistake but that only made Alex's connection to her father stronger.

"So, kiddo, staying for dinner?" Paul asks, smiling at his daughter.

"I think I just might," Alex says and Paul's smile only widens.
