Author's Note: Heya guys! I have an important announcement to make! From now on, I will be shortening my chapters! Because of my studies. Sorry! Don't blame me! Blame my school! Ahah Joke! XD Anyways, toodle-loo!
P.S. If you have noticed that I'm not very formal anymore, well...it was a suggestion of somebody to be more open instead of being so stuffy. Well, I decided to give it a go, so here! XD

It was a clear spring day. Little Kathleen, no older than 5 years old, was playing in the playground as she waited for the school bell to ring. It was the first day of class, and Little Kathleen was nervous. She was attending a public school for all the children of Spades--whether a half-Spade or not. It was located in the middle of the center of Spades and the borders of Spades and Diamonds.
Little Kathleen was different from other children. She did not choose to mingle with the other children, but instead, waited for them to come to her. This made her think that she was not alone.
Poor, poor, little Kathleen, for she did not know the meaning of "being alone".
She was climbing on the fence her mother told her never to climb on because she might fall. She knew she was disobeying her beloved mother, but she wanted to see how it would look like if she was on top of something tall.
As she climbed the fence, she saw much more of the roofs of the houses and buildings around her; she saw the trees, plants and the birds flying in the sky. She looked up, titling her head backwards--trying to get a glimpse of the sky above her.
She tilted her head backwards more. And alas, her mother was right.
She fell down headfirst. It hurt--of course it would; she had scratches on her knees, and a bruise on her cheek. For little Kathleen, it was a good thing that her mother did not see. But when another person would look at her situation, it wasn't good that her mother did not see.
She was about to cry out in pain but she quickly clamped her mouth shut when she thought of the scolding she would get if her mother knew. She winced when she touched the bruise on her cheek.
Suddenly, a hand appeared in front of her. She looked at it in surprise. Then she looked up and saw that the hand belonged to a boy with golden eyes.
That was the first thing she saw.
His mesmerizing golden eyes.
The next thing she saw was the boy's red unruly hair and slightly tan skin. He was obviously the same age as her, judging from his height--he was actually smaller than herself! He was grinning at her with a faint blush on his cheeks. "My name's Wylan Kendrick! What's yours?"
She stared at the hand before answering in bewilderment.
"My name..?" She asked with uncertainty. She didn't know if she should give her name to someone she barely knew. But then again, that was the purpose of giving names, isn't it? It was so in order to get to know more about a person.
"What?! Don't tell me you got amnesia from that fall!" Wylan looked at her with worry and something Kathleen didn't know.
She giggled at his reaction and replied with a smile, "No, silly!" Wylan looked at her with wide eyes. They softened and he smiled at her with just as much as enthusiasm he had before.
"My name is Kathleen. Kathleen Kirkland!" She said, smiling as she put her hand in Wylan's extending one.
The boy grinned at her and pulled her up.

"Kathleen..?"

Little Kathleen could see the lighthouse from her seat in the bus. "Look! Look! It's the lighthouse!" She exclaimed excitedly, poking her hand at Wylan, who was sitting beside her.
Wylan stuck half of his head outside the window. His golden eyes widened and shimmered with mirth and excitement.
"Isn't this exciting?" Kathleen looked at Wylan and grinned.
Wylan looked at her and paused briefly to look at her in awe before smiling.
"Obviously, it is!" Wylan exclaimed.
Little Kathleen could only smile in return.

"Kathleen."

It was finally the day little Kathleen and little Wylan both anticipated and dreaded.
Graduation Day.
The whole graduating batch was doing a play for their final display of talent and learnt knowledge they accumulated throughout their schooling. Little Kathleen had gotten one of the main roles in the play.
But Wylan was no where to be found, and little Kathleen was starting to worry. It wasn't that he had a very important role in the play, but little Kathleen was genuinely worried. She hadn't seen Wylan's parents arriving, nor Wylan himself.
Soon, the play had started. But she still couldn't see Wylan anywhere.
"--So what are we supposed to do now?" She mouthed the words as she lip-synced to her own voice that was recorded now being played over the speakers.
Her co-actors were now mouthing something according to their line as they dramatically acted out the scene. Little Kathleen looked at the crowd and searched for a single person.
Her eyes reached her mother's and father's eyes. She quickly flashed them a small smile before breaking eye contact and searching again.
Her eyes only saw the audience.
He wasn't there.
Even we he was supposed to go up on the stage and perform, he never came.
Even when the play ended.
He was never there.
