Chapter 7: Barrels

"What we need is a cup of understanding, a barrel of love, and an ocean of patience."

                                                                                                    -Saint Francis de Sales

No. No. No. No. No.

That seemed to be the only word your mind could come up with as you nervously paced the deck of the ship, eyes fixated on the wood beneath your bare feet.

You heart was pounding in your chest.

What did you just see?

There was no way you just imagined that. Since you were put on this ship you'd been hearing a voice...You'd been seeing weird things...You even felt something was off about that mirror in Jimin's room...but you never could have imagined this.

Why was Jungkook in the mirror?

More importantly... what were those marking on his arms?

At first glance, you couldn't understand what they were are why they were there, but the longer you looked at them, the began to become clear....Music symbols.

You couldn't read music. You'd never learned.

But as you stared at the music notes, you could almost hear the melody playing out in your head as though you had been hearing it since your childhood.

Jungkook didn't seem to understand either...He asked if you could see them...

And his eyes...they were just like yours....

You ran a hand through your hair, huffing out in frustration as you march over to the barrel full of clean water, dipping the ladle in it and allowing the cool liquid to fall down your throat.

This place wasn't like anywhere else you'd been....there was something strange about it...something you couldn't quite put your finger on.

"Did you see them?"

You body froze in uncertainty as a familiar voice filled your ears, causing your head to snap to both sides.

You were hearing Jungkook, but he was nowhere to be seen.

The heat must seriously be getting to you.

"Did you see the music?"

Your eyes widened as you wiped your mouth, brows furrowing in confusion as you spun on your heel, looking for the long-haired man.

"H-Hello?" You stuttered out in shock.

"Down here."

You blinked in surprise as you looked down into the barrel of water, hands rubbing your eyes just to be sure you weren't going insane.

Jungkook's face reflected back at you in the water, his blue eyes big as he stared up at you.

You swallowed, putting your hand in the water and swishing it around.

He wasn't in the barrel...He probably couldn't even fit in it...

But how on earth were you seeing him?!

"How did you..." You couldn't even finish your question mind too confused.

The dark-haired man furrowed his brows at you in confusion, glancing around nervously.

"Did you see the markings? O-On me?"

You shook your head, biting your lip as you stepped away from the barrel.

What exactly was happening?

You moved backwards, putting your hands up in front of you in a defensive position.

Confusion was the only prominent emotion you could feel in that moment. Nothing was clicking together in your mind.

How was he showing up all around you? First the mirror and now a barrel of water? And why was he so focused on the music notes? Did they have some kind of special meaning?

You took a deep breath, trying your best to remain calm and composed.

You knew Jungkook-well, you didn't really know this particular Jungkook, but you knew enough to know when someone was trying to harm you...and he didn't feel that way...He kind of seem...lost and scared.

"You did seem them, didn't you?"

You jumped back as his voice rang in your head again, causing you to cover your ears in shock.

"Stop getting in my head." You scolded quietly, trying to block out the voice you had become familiar with.

"Stop running away from me."

Touche.

"You-"

"Y/n?"

You frowned at the voice that came from behind you, putting a fake smile on your face as you turned around slowly.

Jimin crossed his arms, his brows raising in what seemed to be curiosity.

Hoseok and Namjoon stood by his side, their eyes boring into your form as they took in your disheveled appearance.

"Y-Yes?" You squeaked, relieved that Jungkook seemed to go silent at the captain's voice.

Jimin took a step forward, his hand extending towards you.

"Are you alright?"

A loud ringing filled your ears as Jimin's hand brushed against your own, causing you to wince in pain and take a step back.

"Don't let him touch you!"

Jungkook's deep voice was all you could hear, the sound completely drowning out the loud waves that crashed around the ship.

Jimin's brows furrowed in concern at your actions, his eyes glancing back to the two men beside him before his attention was back on you.

"What's wrong?" He asked. "Are you hurt somewhere, siren?"

You jumped back as he reached his hand towards your face, skin centimeters away from touching yours.

While you weren't exactly happy with Jungkook almost deafening you, you didn't want another piercing cry to fill your head again.

Confusion was clouding your mind. This had never happened before.

What exactly was going on with you?

A confused look fell over the blue haired man's face as you stumbled backwards, trying to put as much distance between the two of you as possible.

"What's going on, Y/n?" His voice was more stern this time, hands resting on his hips as he assessed your condition. "If you're ill, you must tell me. I cannot have a disease spreading among my crew."

You swallowed hard, eyes locking with Hoseok's for a brief moment.

You shivered.

He was glaring at you with the coldest look you had ever seen.

Why did he hate you so much?

"I'm not sick." You said, moving your gaze back to the captain. "I'm just....I'm having an off day."

That was a terrible lie.

And Jimin saw right through it.

He raised an eyebrow.

"You are an extraordinarily bad liar." He deadpanned. "There is clearly something more to this...something you are not telling me. "

You bit your lip in nervousness, eyes darting across the deck.

You were beginning to draw the attention of the whole crew....Which was the absolute last thing you wanted to do at that moment.

"Well..." You let out a heavy sigh, hating the excuse that popped into your mind

Jimin tilted his head, urging you to continue.

"It's..." You leaned in closer. "It's that time of the month."

The deck fell silent.

You almost laughed at the dark shade of red that fell over the captains face, his eyes widening slightly as he leaned backwards, running his hand down his face.

"A-Ah. I see." He cleared his throat, avoiding eye contact with you. "A-Are you in pain? Do you need anything?"

You shook your head slowly, trying your best not to laugh at his flustered expression.

You hated that this was the only excuse you could think of...but it was funny to watch his reaction.

Come to think of it...

You hadn't had your period since you've started this weird journey...

You didn't even have it in The Four Kingdoms...

Why not?

Maybe time was different in these worlds? You'd have to remember to ask Writer about that later.

"I'll be fine." You said.

Jimin nodded curtly in response.

"We'll be docking in Tortuga soon. If you need anything, we can pick it up there."

You tilted your head at his words.

"Tortuga?"

You had heard that term in your world...wasn't it a place where all the pirates went?

Jimin nodded.

"Don't fear." He consoled. "It is not as bad as you've heard...Most of the false rumors are spread on purpose to stop sailors from trying to find it."

You nodded in understanding.

"Why are we-"

"We are in need of supplies and more weapons...we should be prepared in case your people wish to fight us."

You frowned, only nodding.

"Sirens are brutal." Namjoon said. "If we don't come ready to fight, they'll end us."

You opened your mouth to speak, only to be interrupted by a voice in your head.

"Liar."

You furrowed your brows at Jungkook's words, blinking in surprise.

Did he just call Namjoon a liar? Why?

"A-Are we sure that they'll attack?" You asked.

Hoseok stepped forward, his eyes hard on you as he moved his hands, communicating a message to you.

'Do you think you know more than us, siren?'

Namjoon sighed heavily, turning to face you.

"He said-"

"I know what he said." You deadpanned.

All of the men seemed to be shocked by your words, eyes widening slightly.

"You can understand him?"

You nodded your head.

"My brother was deaf." You explained. "I had to learn sign language if I wanted to speak with him."

Hoseok's surprised expression quickly vanished, hands moving aggressively.

'Why didn't you say anything before?' He asked. 'Were you going to deceive us? Get in on the conversations between the captain and I?'

You crossed your arms.

"If that were the case, then why would I tell you this now?" You asked. "Why not keep it a secret until I found something out?"

He narrowed his eyes.

'I don't trust you, siren.'

"I'm not asking you to trust me, Hoseok."

The dirty blond man turned to face the captain.

'We should just sell her in Tortuga.' He signed. 'I have a bad feeling about her. She will only cause trouble...she may even cost us our lives-'

"I'm not selling her to a bunch of pirates." Jimin snapped. "I've already had this conversation with you. My decision is final, Jung."

'You're making a mistake, Jimin.'

The blue-haired man shook his head.

"What I do is none of your concern." He spat. "Don't you have work to do?"

You almost shivered as Hoseok's kelly green eyes snapped towards your form, giving you a glare before walking away.

What is his problem?

I actually do speak sign language, so I enjoy incorporating that into my work.

I hope you all stay safe and healthy.

I love you.

I adore you.

I purple you.
