New Friend (6)
Second, trailing closely behind Green, his gaze darting about in disorientation, noted that the houses were getting larger and more luxurious as they treaded under the watchful gaze of the moon. The night air was chilly, causing him to shiver slightly. His eyes widened as Green suddenly halted in front of a stunning, two-storey house. Its walls were a gleaming white, decorated with black musical notes, which even in its elegance, didn't come as a surprise to Second, having lived in a palace most of his life. Green, with a teasing spark in his eyes, swung open the door and dramatically bowed to Second.
"After you, your highness". Second rolled his eyes in amusement, playfully shoving Green aside as the latter released a low chuckle, trailing him inside before closing the door.
The living area adorned inside was alluring with pictures of Green with different people hung on the beautifully patterned walls and an impressive hoard of gold medals. Second's eyes gravitated toward a peculiar collection of musical instruments that was unabashedly displayed on a box near the stairs. Green ushered him to the living room featuring an ornate black leather sofa, complete with a fluffy white rug close to a warm electric fireplace.
"Feel at home". Green suggested, before vanishing for a moment. Second nodded thankfully, taking a seat on the plush sofa. In the quiet that followed, Second contemplated the best way to tell Green about his wandering throughout the town, or the fact that he ran away from Hephaestus kingdom. However, Green's return cut off his thoughts as he carried two mugs of steaming hot chocolate, handing one to Second.
"Though you might need something warm to drink". They sat in silence, savoring the sweet warmth, before Second mustered the courage to speak.
"So... what's up with all the music memorabilia? You a rockstar or something?". He asked, breaking the stillness as Green laughed nervously while scratching the back of his neck.
"Oh, they're just shiny pieces of metal. Really, it's all a bit of a joke. I just play music for the royal family, you know?". He said like it was something normal, leaning back playfully before adding,
"I just enjoy playing music for myself. But hey, I needed a job!". He said, and Second nodded, intrigued.
"Well, it sounds cooler than you give it credit for". Green just shrugged with an 'eh' sound, making them both laugh, a shared moment of camaraderie in the quiet night. Green, savoring the last sip of his cocoa, suddenly turned serious.
"Speaking of cool, and now that we're a bit more comfortable, can you tell me why you're here, wandering around Artemis kingdom without any guards? And don't get me wrong, but you look a little... suspicious. Like a thief or something".
"Caught me there, Green. I guess I did look like I was up to no good". Caught off guard, Second laughed nervously, the truth a heavy weight on his shoulders. Did he really look like a thief to that extent? Maybe that's why people were running away from him? Well, there was nothing he can do now to deny it. So, he took a deep breath and confessed,
"Look, I shouldn't be telling you this, but I'm supposed to be on a secret mission. I'm just trying to get some info". Green's eyes lit up, mischief sparkling within as he leaned closely to Second.
"Ooooh, a secret mission, you say? Do tell!". He urged. Second giggled a bit at how Green looked a lot like a toddler and then explained the situation.
"Well, I don't know if you've heared about this, but there's someone stealing people's special abilities. I'm trying to find him". Green hummed, looking down with his hands supporting his chin until finally a flash of memories appeared before him before he snapped his fingers with a big smile.
"Ah! I remember hearing something about that! A weird looking man, right?". He said, his voice shaking slightly at the memory as Second felt a wave of happiness wash over him in the first time this day.
"Wait, you know something about it? Tell me, Green!".
"At one of my performances, one of my friends told me to be careful. There were rumors about a weirdo taking people's special abilities and then disappear. They too mentioned something about... offing people". Green finished softly, seeing how Second froze in place at the word 'offing' echoing in his mind.
"Offing? You mean, like... actually killing them?". Second asked while pressing on the word 'killing' as Green waisted no time at nodding slowly. Second, horrified to realize his mission could be more perilous than initially imagined, now he knew why Victim prevented him from leaving his room at all.
"I swear, this just gets worse. Do you know anything else?". Unfortunately, Green's knowledge extended no further, and Second's dread multiplied. Second sank into the sofa as he groaned, frustration dancing on his face. He felt horrible, miserable, felt like he was standing on a thin rope.
"Great, just what I needed to hear! Ugh, this is getting worse. I feel like I'm just spinning in circles, not getting anywhere". Second covered his face with both hands, and Green felt really sad for him, sensing his gloom, he leaned and asked softly,
"You still haven't told me, why were you hiding? And why did you leave your kingdom?". Second sighed, revealing his fears and desires. I mean, what else can he possibly do now? Not only dose this mysterious man steals abilities but also murder those who he steal from. There was no way he could find him.
"My brothers have no idea I'm here. They think I'm... well, I don't know, just stuck in my room with absolutely nothing to do".
"Wait, you ran away? Like, literally... ran away from the castle?!". Green regarded the information for a moment, piecing together the information, before admitting in shock that Second essentially 'ran away'. Second, feeling even more shameful at the assumption, reluctantly nodded, laid bare.
"I didn't want to sit idly by while our people suffer. I wanted to do something to protect them and find out what's going on". Green, expressing a mixture of awe and surprise, placed a consoling hand on Second's shoulder.
"Wow. Second, you really are quite the prince. You're brave but... you're a bit of a fool too, you know that?". Green told him teasingly with a smirk that made a slight smile breaking through Second's worry.
"I know... but I just can't stand by". However, the overriding fear of what to do next weighed heavily on him, trying hard to breath normally. Admitting his bewilderment at how to capture the mysterious man, with no further leads, Green eventually gave a bright smile as he suddenly got up.
"You know I can't just let you give up, right? And... I happened to know someone who can help us find who we're looking for. And of course, I'll be helping you, your highness". Second sat up straight, his eyes sparkling with hope once again.
"You're really going to help me? Y-You're not going to make this any harder for me o-or hand me back to my brothers?". Green nodded, a wide smile lighting up his face. Second couldn't contain his happiness. Endless gratitude and radiant hope blooming in the royal's heart, he looked forward to the new possibilities this partnership brought. He was back again with someone else by his side this time. Green on the other hand just laughed at how Second was jumping and dancing like he won a championship.
"Chill out, your highness! We've still got work to do, but together, I think we can figure this out". As Second smiled, it felt like his grin could spread across his entire face. Still, Green took note of the time now and sigh then tried to mask his concern with a bit of humor.
"Hey, Second, I think now might be a good time to pull back on the grinning; it's practically a cheshire cat smile at this point. Besides, it's pretty late. I doubt your royal eyes can handle much more excitement for one day". Second, still smiling widely, simply nodded, still mystified that Green would treat him so kindly.
"Thank you again, Green. You have no idea how much this means to me...". Second said with his eyes showing that he had even more things to say. Green's face turned a soft shade of pink. Clearly uncomfortable with the praise, he stuttered,
"S-Stop thanking me so much, idiot! It just... It's just what friends do, right?". Second chuckled, noticing Green's discomfort. How funny that Green's face looked as he tried his best to hide how red his face was turning.
"Aww, look at you! You're all flustered. You really don't know how to handle compliments, do you?". Second smirked, teasingly letting out a giggle as poor Green just snapped at him.
"No! I-I mean, yes. I just... It's not that big of a deal! Even if I do, I'm not about to admit it!". He shook his head as he shook off the compliment, puffing his cheeks and crossing his arms, and to be honest, Second felt a little bad for mocking Green.
"Okay, okay, you can stop blushing. I'll try to control my gratitude... but it's not easy when you've been this much of a help!". Green's expression changed, half-sure if he should be exasperated or relieved by Second's admission. Still, when Green saw how Second was lying on the sofa with his eyes closed, his feet comfortably outstretched and his head resting on her arms, Green tilted his head in confusion.
"Umm... What're you doing?". He asked and Second raised one eyebrow at Green.
"Trying to sleep, duh? It's past midnight, right?". Second told him genuinely, as if it was clear enough, but he was a little surprised when he saw Green giggling under his breath in a clear voice, then grabbing Second by the wrist and pulling him from the sofa with eyes full of determination.
"Yeah, right. Like I would actually let that happen. Now, come on. Royalty doesn't sleep on sofas".
"I keep telling you, I'm not some snob. I can handle a sofa, Green. Stop treating like I'm so special". Second scolded him, trying to convince him to just stop letting him be a burden on Green, who just seemed that he wasn't having it and just rolled his eyes, still holding Second's arm and dragging him upstairs. Green paused, genuinely amused,
"Have faith in me! I'm not doing this for the princely part of you, dumb-dumb. I'm doing this because I know how to treat a guest. They always receive the best treatment". And yet, Second still wasn't convinced and continued his protest,
"Yeah, I could tell. You don't have to treat me differently... I'm just like everyone else around here".
"Trust me, Sec, it has nothing to do with you being a prince... well, okay, maybe a little. Mainly, it's because I'm a great host, no matter who the guest is, idiot". Green playfully scoffed at this, his sarcasm flowing freely now that Second's safety was assured and he had the freedom to tease. And because they were already in front of the room, Second was unable to say more before Green decided to open the door for him and ignore Second's complaints.
"And here we are! Your humble abode for the night". Green made a show out of bowing grandly. As they reached the room, White walls welcomed them, a medium-sized bed placed invitingly against the floor, a brown, empty table sitting near the window that was giving Second a clear and peaceful view of Artemis streets. Second made his way into the room and to the bed, with Green leaning against the door and looking at how Second was scanning the room with 'oww' showing on his face.
"Well, I should let you get to sleep. You've got a long day tomorrow, and I'll be next door, probably charming whoever's hiding in the shadows with my music".
"Charming them? They'd probably run away after they hear your singing". Now it was Second's turn to mock him, and he couldn't stop his loud laughter from escaping when Green gasped dramatically with his hand placed on his chest like he was truly offended.
"Ha! You wish! But seriously, have a good night. Don't let the monsters under the bed bite you!". He said sarcastically before turning off the light, but he could see Second using his mind-controling ability and moving the pillow from its place, then swinging it at Green, who blocked it with his foot like a ball of wool.
"Get out already!!". Second shouted at him, laughing as he saw Green sticking his tongue out at him and then closing the door, his voice still heard by Second's ears.
"Fine! Just yell if you need me". He said in case, the sound of his footsteps against the hard floor began to fade until it disappeared completely. Leaving Second there alone to try and fall asleep without thinking if what the future holds for him or the fact that Victim, Chosen and Dark already know that he's not at his room, not even at Hephaestus kingdom anymore.
