Chapter 11
If anyone ever tells you I am a morning person, assume they're being sarcastic, don't really know me, or I told them to tell you that so you know they're lying and not to trust them, and that they've most likely kidnapped me and you need to save me.
I have this theory that I hate mornings because I never go to sleep. My body just randomly decides that it needs to crash, and it does, usually while I'm doing paperwork. Then, Amelia comes and wakes me up in various ways, all of them not nicely. So, I associate mornings with bad feelings for some reason. I don't really have all the specifics drawn out, but I'm getting there.
And no one can blame me for not liking this morning either. Instead of waking up pleasantly like yesterday, I don't wake up to a warm arm around my side like I was hoping. What the...where did that come from. Any affection I have for him is a play so I can escape. I don't like him. I don't like people. I can't afford to. Not after Brady. I can have crushes, yes. I am a female after all. I just can't act on them, and that includes wishing for things that can't happen.
Miguel and I. We could never happen. He's emotional. I'm cold. He cares about people. It would make my job easier if most of them died. He's a lot like Brady, and if his tastes are anything like Brady's, then I'm as far from it as you can get. Brady would be ashamed of me if he was still around.
Well, it looks like I won't have to worry about Miguel and I's fictional relationship that I totally wasn't dreaming about last night. Because, while I'm waking up and thinking those fortifying thoughts, Miguel storms into the room with a very unhappy look on his face. I'm honestly surprised the door doesn't fall off its hinges, and I wouldn't be surprised if someone comes to see if something's wrong. Then again, this is a tarven that pirates feel safe to stay at, so we'll see what happens.
"Just let it be known, I wanted to wait. However, Captain insisted that I start questioning you again. So, we're going to treat it the same as last time, just with better food," Miguel calmly states, and I sigh.
"Alright, let's go."
He takes a deep breath. "Okay, first question; What does the IEA have planned to get you back?"
"I don't know. I don't actively have plans in place about what to do if I get kidnapped, because usually I save myself and don't want to put my agents at risk. If I did, pirates wouldn't be on the list because of certain relations, it's usually I don't mess with them and they don't mess with me sort of thing. This has only happened once before, and I assumed it would never happen again," I say, slightly fibbing. I mean, I don't know exactly what they're going to do, or when. I just know it's going to be hard, they're very close, and I'm going to have to get an idiot out of my agency when I get back.
He nods, and I can see him trying to tell if I lied or not. Good luck. He finally decides I didn't, because he gives me a piece of fruit. Pineapple, I think. "Alright, next question; Why did have the IEA join the new inter-agency trade devoted specifically to capturing pirates, when you wouldn't touch them for years?"
I probably scare the daylights out of Miguel with my reaction. "That idiot! Oh, he's a dead man. Not only does he make in inter-agency operation, specifically just to spite me because I won't go after. No, he won't let me leave the stupid inter-agencies because of stupid laws that went out of date years ago. And not only that, but when I get kidnapped, he takes over my agency, my birthright, my legacy, my throne, and he completely destroys everything I've been working for. Oh, he's a dead man walking, that's what he is."
I leap to my feet, ignoring the slight pain, and start pacing. "Miguel, is there any way, any in the least, Eva would let me go away for maybe two weeks. I promise to return, and you will have a lot less problems. Such as, this entire idiotic idea of inter-agency cooperation dissolved. And, the three most important agencies, actually, no, scratch that, the three agencies who actually have leaders who are leaders with brain cells and not mindless followers or evil harpies, will pull away and form their own connection. You guys will seriously have nothing to worry about, I just need two weeks tops," I rant.
Miguel looks over slightly taken aback. "Why don't you fill me in on this a bit. Actually, wait a minute, let me go get Captain," He says before dashing out the door.
I take the time after he left to try to calm myself down. "Okay, LB, calm down. Everything will be okay. I knew this was going on before. Well, Zeev hinted at it. All that's going on is it's confirmed. Well, that and I still thought that Zeev was in control, and that Anderson was just threatening everyone not to help. I didn't know he had freaking helped himself to my agency. Oh, the audacity of him. He's a dead man. But how do I do it?"
Unfortunately, some people come in the middle of this. Read, the annoying man that I must kill eventually (seriously, I don't think anyone would shed any tears when I do) and Eva.
"So, you really didn't sign the agency over?" Eva asks, over slightly skeptical.
I throw my hands up in frustration. "Of freaking course I didn't turn my agency over to Anderson. There are easier ways to ruin ten plus years of work, and commit suicide. Besides, I do actually have friends, and I wouldn't wish having to work with Anderson on my enemies."
Actually, scratch that, Anderson and Dirk can absolutely work together. They fit each other and would get each other killed. Save me a lot of time and effort, having to make two deaths of people I openly despise look like accidents.
"But, you're the leader of the IEA. You had to have. You're just being like how women always are; lying and manipulative," Dirk tries to argue, and I just smile. I heard it really irritates the people who annoyed you, and if Dirk's scowl is anything to go by, Amelia was right. Zeev said it just scared the heck out of people, so that's an added plus. I just chimed in that they didn't even know why I was smiling so I could be thinking about anything, which I must say, Dirk's red hair would look really interesting if it caught on fire.
"You're so smart. Yes, I am the leader of the IEA. Yet, the IEA joined this, around the time when I was being tortured by you. So, I couldn't have possibly ordered it. Oh, and the reason they joined was because they didn't have a choice; inter-agency rules. Don't worry, the IEA won't be subject to them much longer; I plan on throwing a coup with the help of two other agencies; form our own league so we're still technically following the rules, but they're also our rules and the other idiots won't know if we're following them or not.
"Now, all I request is two weeks tops to clear this matter up. I swear on a very close friend, the one we discussed last night, Captain Van Acker, his grave that I will return," I say, nearly all in one breath.
Eva however, just shakes her head and sighs. "I'm sorry, LB, but I can't. You are a prisoner, you have to stay here. I know you want to fix this, and I get it; it would benefit you and us. However, I cannot allow it; Amory told me something very interesting last night. Your father is Admiral Player, who is the leader of the government part of this new organization. You're a very valuable hostage that we can't afford to let out of our sight, for any amount of time. Nor can I allow you to talk to people at the IEA, because you might be devising an escape plan, and even if you let us read the letters, you could be using a code. I'm truly sorry, but both of our hands are tied." She explains, and does actually sound remorseful. Dirk is just smirking, making it harder for me to keep smiling.
"Besides, you've made remarkable progress, but the infection isn't fully out of your wounds. You are in no condition to go on a mission to kill someone," Miguel speaks up, and I think everyone in the room gives him a look of 'what are you babbling about'.
"I'm not going to argue with the Captain's point. I understand what's going on and why it is, and I must say it's a very smart move, one I would make in your spot. Your argument however, holds no stock. I've gone on missions in much worse condition. I've also returned in a worse condition, and then went out on another not even ten hours later, because I was needed. My health doesn't matter, as long as I can get the mission done, and I always can. Well, all except for once," I say the last part bitterly, glaring at Dirk.
"Eva, she just-" Dirk starts to complain, but is thankfully cut off by Maartje barging in the room.
"Miguel, wait, Eva's in here. Eva, where is Luna?" Maartje pants out, and my senses instantly go into overdrive.
Maartje is panting, so that means she's been running, probably to find one of the parents. She looks extremely concerned. Both of the parents do too, which most likely means that Luna was supposed to be with Maartje, probably walk there, but she never made it. Dirk however, he looks indifferent. As if he couldn't care what happened which is probably true. But, there's a hint of something else. Something in his eyes, and the way he's fighting down a smile, it's like how he was when torturing me.
Most of this is speculation based on very few facts, and things most people wouldn't see. All I know is three things; Luna is missing, Dirk has something to do with it, and no one is going to believe me so it's up to me to find her.
