10┃Jacob
"Yᴏᴜ ʟᴏᴏᴋ ᴘᴀᴛʜᴇᴛɪᴄ."
"Chris is coming over in ten minutes," Alexa announced as Jacob walked into the living room.
"Oh cool. I'll be right back." He replied walking towards the pool. After he finished his business he walked into the kitchen.
"Get me a beer!" Alexa yelled from the adjacent room as the front door opened.
Chris quickly snatched the beer from Jacob's hand and turned to Alexa. "You're seventeen. You're not drinking under my watch."
"Then get out," Alexa replied calmly. "This is my house."
"Al..." Jacob said. "He isn't wrong."
"You're barely a year older than me." She said. "And don't call me Al."
He shrugged his shoulders as he took a sip.
Chris turned to him. "You are a disappointment. You should set an example for your younger sister."
Jacob looked at him like he was crazy. "Chris, did you hit your head? You know this is an act right?"
"Plus, for someone who has killed, I'm pretty sure that drinking some beer isn't going to be a problem," Alexa said.
Christopher grunted. "Not on my watch." He repeated.
Alexa got up and grabbed another beer from the fridge and took a sip right in front of Christopher.
He looked like he was trying to hold back a 'You're grounded, young lady.'
"Whatever. Your doom." He muttered instead of walking over to the hall to look at what they were working on.
"Oh, by the way," Jacob picked up the bucket, gloves and a mop that was placed on the side of the wall and handed it to Chris. "Time to clean up your shit."
Chris grumbled under his breath as he put on the gloves.
Once he left, Jacob turned to Alexa. She was sketching on her drawing tablet.
"Can I ask why you aren't including Chris on this?" He asked.
"Can I ask why there is still shit in the pool when the handyman cleaned it up already?" She asked back not looking up from her drawing.
"Well, I had to relieve myself somewhere." He replied.
She shook her head, chuckling slightly. Her hands moved swiftly across the screen making the sketch look more and more realistic.
"I don't want to tell Chris because I don't trust him."
"You trust me?" Jacob asked.
"Nope. But I can take you on easily if it comes to the worst." She replied.
"That," Jacob stressed. "Isn't true. And even if it is, you couldn't take Chris on? That guy?"
"Don't underestimate him." She said still sketching.
"All cleaned up," Chris said entering the room. "And for what it counts, that wasn't my shit. So screw you kids. I'm out of here. I've got a date."
Jacob glanced at Alexa. She didn't even bother to look up.
"Okay. I'll ask." He said. "Date?"
"Yeah," Chris said grinning. "She's the librarian."
"What," Alexa said beside him. She was on the phone.
She listened intently while Chris started going through the files that were on the table. They were the finances of Jonathan James. Alexa cut the call and looked at them.
"He has a cabin--" she started.
"--on the east side of the town" Chris finished for her, looking up from his phone.
Alexa raised an eyebrow. Chris placed the file in front of him, pointing to one of the lines.
"Other than the money he sends to the school frequently, he also sends money to some other guy. I looked him up and he is a real estate worker. So either he has a house he is trying to sell, or he is paying to make sure it is well taken care of. As for how I found the house, it was just a simple thing called Google." He explained.
"Not bad." Alexa mused. "Got to say, I'm surprised."
Chris scoffed. "You shouldn't be. I'm just that great."
"I want you to go check it out tomorrow. Find out who lives there. And if he is selling, pose as a buyer." Alexa ordered.
"What about you guys?" He asked.
Just then our doorbell rang. Jacob looked through the peek hole to see Christina and her brother.
"Get out of here," Jacob whispered to Christopher as Alexa cleaned up the table. She dumped all the files into her bag and threw the guns under the sofa. Chris ran out of the backdoor.
Jacob opened the door to get pushed back by a seventeen-year-old girl.
"Alexa!" Christina ran to the sofa. She was all dressed up.
"What are you doing here?" She replied placing her tablet down.
"We are going to go to the club," Christina replied grabbing her hand and pulling her up.
"What is he doing here?" Alexa asked glaring at Chase. Christina didn't bother to explain as she dragged Alexa up the stairs into her room.
"I'm not a part of this," Chase said sitting down.
"Want a beer?" Jacob asked him as he grabbed his.
Chase nodded. "If I'm going to spend the evening with my sister I'm going to need something way stronger than that."
"I can relate," Jacob replied passing him one.
The sound of the television filled the room as they drank their beer.
"You live alone?" Chase asked finally.
"Yeah. Just the both of us." He replied.
"How come?" He asked placing his empty beer bottle on the floor.
"Our parents died when we were twelve," Jacob explained. "Jumped around foster homes for a while and then I was old enough to live on my own. So I legally adopted Alexa."
Chase nodded his head. He didn't say "I'm sorry" or even look sorry, which Jacob was fine with. Usually, when people say it, it didn't really make much of a difference.
"She's all ready," Christina called from the stairs.
"I present to you..." She began as Alexa barged into the living room, grabbed Jacob's beer and took a swig.
"Alexa Black," Christina muttered.
Alexa looked breathtaking. She was wearing a simple black dress that flowed to her mid-thigh. Her hair curled up a little at the ends. Her mascara highlighting her grey eyes. So Jacob said what needed to be said.
"You look pathetic."
"Thank you, brother." She replied as she grabbed her white sneakers. "But from the look on Chase's face, I can tell I look great."
Chase immediately looked away.
"Nope," Christina said as grabbed the sneakers from her hand. "You're wearing these."
As the girls bickered about the shoes, Jacob noticed Chase checking out Alexa.
"You might wanna make the first move when it comes to this." He said looking down at his phone. "She definitely isn't going to do it."
Chase didn't reply.
"Alright. Let's go." Christina ordered as she opened the door. Three of them reluctantly followed her.
"I call shot-gun..." Christina chirped as they walked to the car.
That's when the shots were fired. Jacob's first reflex was the push Alexa behind him, but she didn't stay there long.
"Into the car now!" She ordered as she grabbed the keys from him.
They all pushed in as she jumped into the driver's seat through the passenger. A bullet hit the glass window beside her as she pressed the accelerator and took off.
Jacob was sitting beside her, while Chase and Christina were behind.
"What. In. The. Bloody. Hell. Was. That." Jacob let out, faking the scared look on his face.
Alexa did the same but concentrated on driving them out of there.
"Do you guys have a place we can go?" She muttered.
"We do," Christina said looking shaken up.
"Who were they? And why were they shooting at us?" Jacob turned to ask Chase as Christina gave Alexa the address.
"They weren't shooting at you. They were shooting at me." Chase replied. "Just get us to the house. I'll explain there."
"This address is your house?" Alexa asked.
"It's where we live," Christina replied.
Jacob glanced at Alexa as he sat properly on the seat. Alexa was right.
The shooting helped after all.
