Closing Night Fails are Good for the Soul

Dean waited nervously behind the doors of the "castle," wondering where the hell Cas was. Out of all the nights Cas had to be running behind was closing night. Dean wiped the sweat that was building up on his palms onto his pants and hoped Cas was about to come. He swallowed, keeping his ears on the song and his eyes open to spot Cas; the wait causing him to panic even more.

Seriously?! Where is he?! Dean thought, just as it was his time to go out and Cas still wasn't there. Forcing aside his feelings on the matter, Dean threw on the facade of Lancelot. Alright, Dean, you've got this! Improvise!

"HERBERT" Dean screamed, running out onto the stage, weaving back and forth through the knights and ladies that were to be at the "wedding." Cas, or Herbert, was nowhere to be found. "HERBERT! HERBERT, WHERE ARE YOU?!"

Dean waited a moment, after running around fully the stage shouting for Herbert, in case Cas was going to run out, but he didn't. Internally he cursed Cas - what if they expected him to sing, Dean didn't sing. He turned toward the crowd, before meeting eyes with Bobby - the pit director. For a moment Dean thought he was free, but Bobby started to lead the pit into the next song - Cas's song.

Thoughts whizzed through his head at the speed of light, ranging from I hate you all to why tonight. Before Dean could freak himself out anymore, he took a steadying breath. Think, Dean! Imagine Lancelot was left at the alter. How would he feel-? No. How would you feel if you got there and Cas wasn't there?

"Oh, Herbert..." Dean sighed, feeling real tears well up in his eyes and he faked a sob. He cast one last hopeful look towards the "castle's" door before releasing a sad sigh.

Sing, you idiot! He thought to himself after he took another pause.

"Oh, when you're lost...on life's trail..." Dean shook his head, looking upwards as he sang Cas's song. "And Herbert's left you..." Dean's voice cracked and he quickly blinked back a tear that almost escaped.

"Lancelot!"

Dean turned around to see Cas there, in all his glory, smiling lightly as he walked through the castle doors. His purple robes were swishing as he walked, and he seemed almost a bit out of breath. Dean could detect the faint marks of Cas's anxiety pushing through, however his relief at seeing Cas seemed to calm him down.

"Herbert!" Dean yelled back, running up the stage to Cas quickly and pulling his friend into a crushing hug. Cas seemed almost surprised for a second, but then hugged back. Dean had to hold his tongue to stop himself from scolding Cas right there because, at this moment, that wasn't what Cas needed. He pulled away after a second and started to lead Cas down the stage, back towards the audience. "You had me scared there for a moment."

"Scared?" Cas asked, true confusion coating his features, and Dean had to bit back a laugh.

"I thought you might have left me."

"Why would I do that?" Cas asked, a look of almost genuine surprise on his face.

"Well, you know what they say about me..." Dean trailed off, standing to the side and taking Cas's hands in his own. He was surprised the pit continued to play the soft music of Herbert's grail. "I did hit my grandfather over the head with a shovel."

"Sir Lancelot," Cas reached a hand up to cup Dean's cheek after pausing a second when the audience laughed. "You came for me when I needed you most. I promise to do the same."

Dean couldn't help it. What had started off as simple and innocent improvising had melded into something more deep. Dean hesitantly leaned forward and crushed his lips to his best friend's, who responded back after a moment. There were cheers from both behind them and in the crowd, who still had no idea of the improvising that was going on. When they pulled apart, Dean pulled Cas to the right as Garth ran out to do his Sir Robin scene.

Cas had a dazed look on his face and couldn't seem to take his eyes away from Dean as he tried to pay attention to the cues. Thankfully Dean didn't miss one of his favorite moments in the play, taking out a shovel and hitting Herbert's father over the head with it because Zachariah, who played the father, was definitely on Dean's list of people he disliked. As soon as everyone started to sing the "Find Your Grail" finale, Zachariah ran out.

"Stop that, stop that, stop that!" He shouted. Dean smirked before walking behind the curtain to grab the shovel. "What do you think this is, a musical or something?!"

After Dean had happily hit the Senior over the head with the fake shovel and he had fallen to the ground "dead", he looked to Cas, who had crossed his arms and was feigning disappointment. "And I promise to not kill any more people. Ever."

There was a collective "Awwww!" from the crowd as Dean took Cas's arm again. They walked forward to finish the song with the rest of the ensemble as well as walking into the start of something new for them.

"For this is the show that ends like this!"
