THERE IS NO FLAME WITHOUT A SPARK. Flickering flames do not even begin to steal the breath from the air without a spark. Without a single second in time dedicated to the motion of enacting a spark, there is no fire to incite. A fire may dwindle to an ember but as a phoenix rises from the ashes so does a flame arise from the darkness. But a flame is not always just a flame, but a spark will always be a spark. Even in the form of hopes and justice and ideas. Even in the form of a team hoping to save their world from utter destruction.

The spark of the Avengers was set into motion in 2012, where a terrified three-year-old who had been pushed from her parents' hands found herself swooped up into a redhead's arms. The lost child was one of the many native New Yorkers misplaced during the Battle of New York, but the woman was swift in killing several of the monsters from space before returning the scared girl to her father's arms.

The world called them heroes, and the little girl held safe in the (soon-famous) " Black Widow's " arms knew that to be truer than most.

However, a spark does not always strike a " perfect " fire...

MAYHEM ENSUED AS THE INFERNO ROSE. Flames licked at the tips of the skyline. Ebony ran as the crimson dawn chased the idea of peace. Agonizing cries spilled from terrified lips as blazes rose in the aftermath of the heroes' feverous trail. Four years after being rescued by her favorite superhero did a seven-year-old girl watch her heroes fall apart from her family's tv.

The world's heroes did fail but the fire they ignited did not burn out. If only the heroes of her world had never fallen from their mighty tower so soon. Maybe, just maybe, she would have been enough for Mata-ji if she had that hope they brought her in her puffy, red eyes.

THE FIRE THAT CAUGHT HAD BECOME EMBERS IN A FEW SHORT YEARS. Blinking furiously as every breeze whisked life back in an instant before falling to darkness again. Light would paint her bedroom walls in an instant only to crumple to a vile, moonless black again. In the calamity of the " snap ", few heroes were left standing. The ones she still had, well it's not as if they cared about her at all in this disastrous backlash of a world once on fire.

With the news spreading 'round her of a hero turned villain; it became hard to believe in the fire any hero had kindled when the world around her seemed to have never stopped burning.

HERE I AM AGAIN...
with all the inspo I've had for my drafts recently we shouldn't really be surprised now, should we? I've had this idea for a long time and now that I've taken the time to think it over, plan it thoroughly, and add even more to the characters and plot I've fallen in love!!

this is the fifth version of Elaine, and she's at her best right now (originally it was a self-insert fic with an awful boring name and backstory). an important thing to know about Elaine is that she's fifteen when the book starts but by the end of act one she's sixteen. most of the characters you'll meet as Elaine's ✨acquaintances✨ are either a year younger than her or are in their early twenties.

but onto the actual plot- the preface for this story is explained vaguely here: Elaine's entire life has been touched by the superheroes in positive and negative ways. most recently though it's been completely negative especially after the New York vigilante turned Avenger has been branded a murderer. the plot touches more on what was "lightly" discussed in TFATWS with the after-effects of the undo-snap. (and with TFATWS already having happened well...) with how the people who came back are being taken care of better than the people who never left because the people who weren't snapped away aren't "special" enough for their cries to be answered.

I'll also be introducing a Doc Oc to the mcu which I am so EXCITED ABOUT!! after watching all of the animated spiderman series as a kid (especially the one where Oc tries to recreate a formula to make more spideys) I knew that Mr. Octopus was the perfect villain to introduce Elaine with!!

Elaine and Peter's dynamic is hilarious just to think about. I mean it's literally found family trope plus: young adult vigilante (roughy 19) is branded a murderer, after a psychopath bent on destroying a dead man's legacy attempts to murder his entire class and family, runs into an even younger vigilante with pyrokinetic powers who hates him for turning to the dark side. and now the adult vigilante has a minor vigilante to keep safe (along with her acquaintances) as a vigilante task force chases after them. but in all seriousness, they have a very enemies to besties relationship.

ALSO: this book is officially part of the OCCURSUS SERIES which includes my T'Challa fic " Freefall " and this fic. you don't have to have read " Freefall " to understand what goes on in this fic EXCEPT the alternate ending that will eventually come with the end of " Freefall ". the alternate ending will be lightly discussed during this fic, although I will be focusing more on " Freefall " for the considerable future.

there's so much to unpack about this fic with the first act being my own plot but I guess I'll just have to write it for y'all to find out!!
