“Eunice? Are you already done?” I heard knocks from my door.
“Yes, Serpens! I'm going downstairs after a minute or two!” I shouted for her to hear my response. Afterwards, I heard her steps going down.
I heave a sigh and started to stare at my face in the mirror. Will I be able to remember these single details of mine? Will I be able to remember every person that came into my life?
I shrugged the thoughts out of my head. I have this rare condition called Highly Superior Autobiographical Memory or HSAM. People like me who has this condition could remember everything that has occured in our life including conversation and emotions that we experienced as well as every person we encountered, significant or not.
“Are you sure about your decision?” Cheska asked me and took some of my baggages.
“Yes, I will let them erase all of my memories even though it's risky.” I answered as we walk.
“Will you still remember us when you come back?” Serpens asked in a sad and worried tone.
I held their hands and mouthed, “Come on, I'll still remember the both of you, I won't ever forget you.”
“What if it'll cause damage to your brain? Stay here instead, we'll help you forget all those things that makes you suffer.” Cheska’s tears took its path down to her cheeks. I wiped it immediately and smiled.
“With my condition, I won't be able to forget those.” They just nodded. I know how hard it is for them but I'm too desperate to forget them—him.
“I'll drive, I know you want to visit someone first.” Serpens took the car keys, we settled inside before she started to drive for a long ride.
After hours, we safely reached their place. We knocked on the door.
I tried to catch my breathe due to shock and the sudden fast beat of my heart. His black hair is messy, his forehead creased as his thick eyebrows formed a straight line. His thick, long eyelashes were so beautiful as his eye blinks for a second.
“Who are you?” words came out from his lips.
“Ah, can't you remember me?” I asked hoping that he might remember me the way I could also remember every details about him.
“Sorry, I don't know you.” I just smiled trying to hold my tears back.
“I-It's fine, I just came here to give you this.” I handed him an envelope. He opened it and read it out loud.
“September 23, 2020—The day I need to say goodbye for I know, after this, all memories of mine will dissolve, I will no longer remember you; our conversation; nor details of you. This doesn't break my heart but every time you see me and you say you can't remember me, there has always been a missing piece. Tears never failed to ruin my make-up, I just miss how we started with ‘hello’ and we ended up to being strangers. I know that you have an amnesia, but how can I tell you everything I knew if you don't want to listen either? If this is the last time, I hope there will be a start again for us—preferably when I don't have my memories anymore. You will always fill this missing piece in my heart.”
Like what I have said in the note, tears began to ruin my make-up again as he read it. I wiped it with a handkerchief.
“Can I have a last hug from you?” he just stared at me without saying any words, without doing any move. I laughed with pain and turned my back, it surprised me when he gave a last hug.
“I'll find you again soon when you got back,” his last words made me flatter yet made my tears burst.
