1: On Top Of The World

"Traceyy!" a familiar voice called. It was music to my ears. I closed my locker to come face to face with my best friend Bianca Rodriguez. This girl was so beautiful, it almost hurt to look at her. Her caramel colored skin is smooth like a baby's. She had a full head of curly dark brown locks, and when she straightened it, it reached her butt. Her big hazel eyes were her biggest weapon. She could get anyone to do anything she wants for her by just batting her eyelashes and throwing in some puppy dog eyes. She has a nice figure to top it all off too. It's no surprise that half the boys in school worshipped the ground she stood on.

"So, I heard that David finally asked you out yesterday! Why didn't you tell me?" Bianca looked sad, her pouty lips gave it away. She loved to be in the know, so anything I didn't tell her, she took it as an insult.

"I was so wrapped up in the moment, screaming it out to the world wasn't at the top of my list of priorities," I chuckled. "Who told you anyway?"

"Tremaine, of course. He sounded like an excited little schoolgirl when he told me. I wouldn't be surprised if half the school knows by now!" she smiled.

Of course Tremaine told her. He couldn't keep a secret if his life depended on it, he's always had a big mouth. Trey has been Bianca and I's best friend since we are all in diapers. Our parents all knew each other, and since there is some unspoken law that friends must force their children together, we all spent copious amounts of time with each other. Not that we minded. Trey became friends with David in middle school, and he fit in with our group like he always belonged.

I laughed. "I guess I should've known he would say something when he found out."

A pair of strong arms wrap around my waist. "You guys laughing at me?" said the deep voice I'd grown to love over the years.

I turned around and kissed David on the cheek.

"Nah, we were just talking about Trey and his big mouth" I answered, smiling up at him.

"My gossip senses are tingling! Who's talking about me?" Tremaine called from a few lockers down.

I rolled my eyes.

"I am! You have a problem with it tough guy?" I accused while keeping the smile on my face. I love to bother Tremaine, he's like the brother I never had.

Tremaine ran over and messed up my hair, laughing. "Ha, you're such a little punk."

I punched him on his arm playfully, and he held up his hands in surrender. "Who's the punk now?"

The bell rang and Trey jogged away, laughing. I pulled out my brush to fix my hair before running to class with Bianca and David.

-

In class, David and I pass notes like it was our job. Today was no different.

A paper came flying onto my desk as Mr. Long turned his head.

I unfolded it. Movies tonight?

I thought about it. I didn't remember having any plans today, so I wrote Sounds like fun, I just have to check with my mom first.

Folding up the paper, I flung it back on his desk. I watched him open the note, and then shake his head. I knew he was a little upset because I have to ask my mom's permission to do anything. David, on the other hand, gets to go wherever he wants, whenever he wants. Oh, how much better life would be if I had parents like that!

I was so into my thoughts that I almost didn't notice the paper land back on my desk. Opening the permanently crumpled paper, I read: Okay, but if she says no, YOU OWE ME.

Instead of writing back, I smiled at him and then threw the crumpled paper into my bag. I love to keep the notes we send to each other. I think they're cute. I sighed, and attempted to pay attention to the lesson.

-

At lunch, we took our usual spots in the lunchroom. It was in the middle of the room, around the cheerleaders and the other jocks. We weren't exactly the stereotypical 'popular' kids, but we were pretty well known around school. It's not like we attended a huge school, though. We lived in a fairly small part of town, so it's not hard to be known. Plus, we're pretty cool people to be around.

David approached the table, setting his tray down and sliding mine over to me. "Finally! Took you long enough. I thought my stomach would digest itself!" I rolled my eyes and smirked. He threw a fry at me, but I caught it in my mouth expertly.

"Ha!" I taunted while I chewed.

"Close your mouth, that's disgusting!" he exclaimed, shaking his head in disgust.

I swallowed. "Doesn't matter, you still like me!" I stuck my tongue out at him. When we hung out, it was a constant flow of laughter and good times. Being with him was comfortable, and he made me happy. You know how people always say you have to be friends before you can be lovers? Well, I definitely think it's true. I've had one too many relationships that didn't work out because we rushed into things. That was probably my fault, though. I always fall hard and fast. But David and I, we're different. We've been friends since middle school, so we know each other like the back of our hands. We only started dating yesterday, but it feels like so much longer, because we have so much history.

Bianca sat down and covered her eyes, interrupting my thoughts. "Am I interrupting anything? she giggled.

"Why would we be doing anything in the middle of the lunchroom?"

We both started to laugh, and she uncovered her eyes.

"I'm just making sure, couples are freaky nowadays!"

"You would know! Is that how you and Trey are behind closed doors?" I accused, causing David to laugh.

Bianca blushed and playfully pushed David, even though I was the one that said it. Bianca has had a crush on Trey for so many years I lost count. It's so obvious, given the way she stares at him and blushes whenever he says something friendly to her, but Trey remains oblivious. It's kind of sad, really.

"Oh!" David exclaimed, remembering something. "Did you ask your mom about the movies yet?" I rolled my eyes and pulled out my phone, dialing my mom's number. I really hope she'll let me go. She can be a little strict sometimes, especially when it comes to boys.

She answered on the third ring. "Tracey, aren't you supposed to be in school?" she asked suspiciously. Leave it to my mother to assume I was skipping school because I called her in the middle of the day. Does she really think I would do something so stupid?

"I am in school mom! Can't you hear all the teenage chatter around me?"

She laughed. "You're right. Sorry about that sweetheart. So, what do you want?"

"Why do I have to want something?"

"You're actually calling me. What else could that mean?"

I smiled. I guess I was pretty predictable. "I was wondering...can I go to the movies with David tonight?"

"Alone? No Tremaine or Bianca?"

"Yes mom, alone."

"Hmm. I suppose. But no funny business!"

"No funny business, pinky promise." I smiled.

"Make sure you're home by eleven tonight, okay? Your father is coming home tonight, and he wants to see his little girls."

He is? My father is one of those business men that spends all his time away from home. Don't get me wrong, he's a wonderful dad, but sometimes it feels like he values his job more than his family. It's not uncommon that I see him only once within a month.

"Yeah, eleven, I got it! Love you, bye." I hung up before she could add anything else.

"So, I'm guessing that's a yes?" David asked.

"Yes sir!" I saluted him.

He reached over and kissed me on the cheek. "I can't wait," he said, almost seductively.

-

After school, I went outside to meet up with the group. It was a mild autumn day, and there was a cool, comfortable breeze floating through the air. The leaves were just starting to change color, but the majority were still green and none have fallen to the floor yet. I basked in the beauty of the day and made my way over to my friends.

When I walked up to them, Bianca had her pouty lips again, and I frowned.

"What's wrong?"

"Now that you two are together, you've forgotten about us!" she cried.

"Oh please, you know we love you. Don't you think we deserve some alone time though? Plus, I'm sure you and Trey could find something to do together tonight," I winked.

Bianca blushed again. I shook my head, wondering how Tremaine still hasn't noticed her monumental crush. It couldn't be more obvious if she held up a sign professing her love.

Trey chuckled. "Yeah. You down for a Prison Break marathon and some pizza?"

Bianca blushed so hard, she resembled a tomato. The effect he has on her is hilarious, but cute.

I laughed. "See? You're set for tonight." Turning to David, I asked "You're picking me up at seven, right?"

"On the dot, so don't take forever to get ready, okay?"

I scoffed. "I'm offended! I don't take long to get ready!"

He smirked. Yeah, sure. See you later, okay?" He gave me a kiss on the cheek and walked to his car.

After saying goodbye to Trey and Bianca, I did the same and drove home.

-

I stood in front of the mirror, inspecting my outfit. I had on a loose black shirt dress with a silver belt around my waist to give it some shape. I didn't do anything to my jet black hair, leaving it straight down to my shoulders. I slipped into silver flats, and called it a night. Nodding to myself, I decided I was happy with my outfit.

Sighing dreamily, I thought about David. Tonight is going to be my first official date with him! Sure, we've hung out together many times before, but always as a group, and as friends. It's still a little hard to believe that we're dating now. I've always wanted to know whether my feelings toward him were more than friendly, and I'm excited to give this a try.

Checking my watch, and saw the time go from 6:59 to 7:00. As expected, I heard a car horn outside. David was never late, never early. He was always on time. I never knew how he manages it. I ran downstairs and out of the house, yelling "Bye mom!" on the way out.

When I stepped into the car, I gave him a quick peck on the lips. "Hey, handsome."

And handsome he was. He had pretty basic features, but he managed to make it work for him. His brown eyes seemed to sparkle whenever they caught the sun, drawing whoever looked at them in. His lips were plump, full, and soft to the touch. His cheekbones were worthy of modeling, and his body was toned from basketball.

Before I knew it, David was pulling into the parking lot of the movie theater. My ears grew hot as I realized that I spent the whole ride staring at him.

"So, what movie do you want to see?" he inquired as we got out of the car.

"Hmm, I was thinking horror. How does that sound?"

His face lit up, and he smirked deviously. "I know just the movie, if you want to be scared."

I shuddered, already regretting my decision to watch a horror movie. It's no secret that I get scared easily.

David wrapped his arm around me. "Come on, don't try to back out. I promise it won't scare you too bad."

"I'm holding you to that," I warned as we walked into the movie theater.

-

We ended up watching Insidious. David was right when he said it wouldn't scare me too bad. It had some creepy parts, but overall it was pretty enjoyable. I think the worst part was when that song "Tiptoe Through The Tulips" played while the ghost was dancing. That was inexcusable! I'm pretty sure that scene ruined that episode of Spongebob for me forever.

We walked out the movie theater, David's arm around me again. "See, I told you it wasn't that bad. You looked like you enjoyed it."

"Yeah, I did." I admitted. "I'm still going to have nightmares, though."

He hugged me tighter. "Aww, it's okay. I'll protect you from all those scary spirits floating around your room." He snickered.

I pushed him away, laughing. "You're so mean! I'm gonna take you up on that offer, so get ready for some ghost hunting." I said as I got into the car, and he followed suit.

"Me, a ghost hunter? Never! You're on your own soldier."

"I thought you said you'd protect me?" I replied with a huge yawn.

"Tired? You can come back to my place and crash if you want."

"I wish I could, but I have to be home by eleven."

He checked his watch. "It's only ten. You can come back to mine for a bit, then I can drop you back."

I thought about it. Is it worth the risk? If I don't make it home in time, I can get in a lot of trouble. I do want to spend some more time with him though. "Hmm, sounds good. You better get me home on time though," I warned.

He chuckled. "Don't worry, I got you," he assured as he pulled away.

-

We got to his house and walked inside. It was a medium sized house, but it was really cozy. It was one of those places that looked lived in, like a home. It made me feel comfortable and relaxed. David's parents weren't home, however, so the house was eerily quiet when we got in.

He took me to the living room and we sat down on the couch. Turning on the TV, he passed me the remote so I could choose what we would watch. I settled on Criminal Minds, one of my favorite crime shows.

"Want something to eat?" he offered, standing up and stretching.

"Do you even have to ask?" I accused.

He chuckled and shook his head. "I guess not. Be right back," he said, walking to the kitchen to make some food.

For the rest of the night, we ate and enjoyed ourselves. We laughed and joked with each other, barely paying attention to the television. It was the same as when we were just friends, but now we were alone. In the back of my head, I wondered if this was supposed to feel any different, but I was still having a good time so I didn't put too much thought into it.

Before I noticed, I managed to snuggle up against David and get comfortable. He'd always been a great human pillow, and that didn't change either. I began to doze off, vaguely remembering that I was supposed to be at home.

Oh well, I thought, I'll deal with it in the morning.
