Fifty
Sliding the casserole in the oven, Haneul got started on the dishes while her mind was somewhere else. Since Eunji moved in, the two girls have been together more than ever. Haneul couldn't help but notice them change the subject of conversation when she walked in the room. Haneul knew one thing, her daughter had to be talking to a boy and she wanted to talk to Hyunji about it before it went too far.
Ding!
Hyunji left her phone on the counter before she went upstairs to take a shower. Thats the second time it vibrated and Haneul's urge to look at it was only growing. She wanted to sit down and have a conversation with Hyunji, giving her daughter the opportunity to tell Haneul what's been going on.
Ding!
Ding!
A loud sigh left Haneuls lips as she turned off the sink and dried her hands with a towel. Walking over to the counter she grabbed Hyunji's phone and entered the password.
_______________
Hyunji turned off the blow dryer as she ran her fingers through her hair. All her homework was done and she had studied for a test the next day. Fresh out of the shower, Hyunji was ready to eat dinner and curl up in bed watching a movie.
"HYUNJI!"
The sound of her mothers voice made her stiffen. That wasn't a "dinner is ready" tone of voice, that was a tone she only used when Hyunji was about to get yelled at. The only thing is Hyunji didn't remember doing (or not doing) anything that would warrant her mother to be angry.
She couldn't have found out about Jungkook?
She hoped that wasn't the reason, still, a wave of adrenaline rushed through her body as her stomach turned. Hyunji went to pick up her phone before walking downstairs only to realize she didn't have it with her.
"Shit," Hyunji muttered, remembering she left it downstairs.
Hyunji went down the stairs and into the kitchen. She hoped her mother called her name when she had the blow dryer on and that Hyunji simply didn't hear making Haneul shout louder. That was not the case.
"Mom?" Hyunji quietly said, seeing her mother pacing the living room.
"Would you care to explain what this is!?" Haneul raised her voice, shoving Hyunjis phone in her face.
She knows.
Hyunji looked at the screen and it was even worse than she imagined. Not a 'I love you' text from Jungkook, not him spamming her sweet nothings, it was a picture. One she hoped no one besides Jungkook would ever see. Hyunji had put on her black lingerie and taken some photos for her boyfriend.
On the screen was Hyunji laying on her back in the mirror, both her knees were bent in front of her and her back arched as her hand was in her hair. The erotic photo was more than enough to tell Haneul that her daughter was having sex outside of marriage. Hyunji only remembered the lewd comments Jungkook made in reply.
"Y-you went through my phone?" Hyunji stuttered.
"That's what you have to say." Hanuel scoffed. "He kept texting and I checked to see who it was because I knew you've been hiding something! And this picture, we taught you better than that Hyunji! You're not married, you know that's a sin. You act like we've taught you nothing!"
Hyunji began tearing up as her mother yelled at her. All the guilt of not telling them was slowly erased. This is why she didn't tell them. Her mother found out and Hanuels first instinct was to scream at Hyunji.
"You had no right going through my text messages. I'm 18 and you can't control my life anymore! I am going to make my own decisions now and you need to respect that." Hyunji raised her voice.
"Oh, you're an adult so you think lying and sneaking around behind our backs is okay?! I knew you wouldn't stick around going to church much longer but I didn't expect this! I thought you knew better than to spread your legs to the first guy-"
"He loves me!" Hyunji screamed. "Don't you dare speak poorly of him!"
She wouldn't let anyone talk bad about her boyfriend. Her tears stopped falling as rage burned up inside of her. All the emotions she felt were coming and spilling out whether she liked it or not.
"That's what you think. I should've known something was up when you were over Yuri's house 24/7. I thought I could trust you!" Hanuel scowled.
"You wanna know why I lied to you? Because of THIS! Because I didn't want to be screamed at! It's my life and my decisions not yours, and you'll never get it!" Hyunji spoke, "For years I've had to live being fake so you keep loving me, accepting me, so you don't tell me how much of a failure you think I am!!"
"That's not true and you know it, Hyunji!"
How long would they go back and forth arguing? Hyunji didn't care to find out. Snatching her phone out of her mothers hand she ran to her room, tears she didn't want her mother to see threatening to fall. Hyunji walked in her room being followed by Jay. She slammed the door shut letting a shaky breath out. She wanted to be alone, completely alone, left to drown in her own tears.
Hyunji sat on the floor leaning against her bed, hugging her knees as she cried. Now she was a complete disappointment to her parents. Hyunji saw the look in her mothers eyes, and she knew the same look would be found on her fathers face the next day. Even the thought of her father knowing put her stomach in knots, he would be worse than her mother.
Jay nudged her face with his nose, giving her small licks making her look up. He pawed at her lap before laying against her legs.
The house felt so suffocating, she had to get out.
Picking up her phone she found her boyfriend's contact, quickly dialing his number. Hearing it ring a few times she slouched, was this really going to be the only time he wasn't going to answer?
"Sorry, babe, my phone was in the living room." Jungkook answered on the last ring.
"Can you please pick me up? I have to get out of here for a while." Hyunji said, trying not to burst into tears again.
"Ji, what happened? Are you hurt? Is everything okay?"
By the way her voice sounded he knew she was crying.
"My mom knows."
"Ah," He sighed, "I'll come get you. I'll be there in twenty minutes I promise."
"Thank you. Can you text me when you get here?"
____________
Hyunji got out of her pajamas and upgraded to sweatpants and a hoodie while she waited for her boyfriend to arrive. She sat with Jay on the floor, softly petting him. Her phone vibrated in her pocket and Hyunji saw her boyfriend's contact and quickly stood up.
"I'll be back later." She told Jay.
Hyunji grabbed her purse and opened her door as she quickly went down the stairs. She peered into the living room seeing her mother sitting on the couch quietly. Hyunji scoffed and turned towards the front door as she opened it.
"Hyunji, where are you going?"
Eunji was just returning from a late class and about to walk through the front door. Hyunji didn't even want to explain it all over again. Hyunji brushed passed her cousin but Eunji was more persistent than that, grabbing her younger cousins arm.
"What happened?" Eunji repeated herself.
"My mom knows about Kook. She looked through my phone and found a picture I sent him of me in lingerie. I got screamed at to say the least." Hyunji turned around and told Hyunji.
"I'm sorry,"
"I'm going to Jungkooks. If I'm not back tonight take Jay out before bed okay?"
"Okay. Text me later if you decide to stay over at his house."
Hyunji nodded her head and walked down the driveway seeing a gray SUV park at the curb. She got in the passenger side and shut the door as she sighed.
"Baby. . ." Jungkook looked at her tear stained face.
"Can you just take me somewhere else. . ." Hyunji muttered under her breath.
"You want to go to my house?"
"Yes."
_____________
The car ride to Jungkook's house was silent, Hyunji didn't want to talk and he didn't want to force her. Arriving at his house he got out of the car and walked around to open her door. Jungkook grabbed her hand and walked her to his front door. Jungkook walked inside and peaked in the living room, seeing it was vacant.
"Do you want anything to eat or drink?" Jungkook asked as he took her over to the couch.
"No. . ." Hyunji muttered, but she was lying to herself. "I don't have an appetite.""
"Ok, baby. I'm pretty sure we have some leftovers from dinner, or I could make you ramen, if you want something later."
"Do you wanna talk about it or just watch a movie or something?"
"I don't even know. The look of disappointment on her face was like no other. She's never looked at me like that. I know my mom will tell my dad and things will be even worse. It just hurts to see them look at you like you're a complete disappointment." Hyunji looked at him, her eyes tearing up.
"I'm sure they're disappointed that you're not following in their beliefs but no one could even think you're a disappointment."
"I hope so. . ."
"How did they find out?"
The thought of her mother seeing the erotic photo she took made her nauseated. Hyunji never wanted her parents to know about her having sex, let alone find a picture of her in a lacy bralette and panties.
"My mom went through my phone, I forgot it downstairs and she found the picture I sent to you the other day." Hyunji explained.
"Oh man, Ji. I'm sorry." Jungkook sighed. "I know it just happened but we'll get through this no matter what. Just know I'll be at your side. I'll take care of you."
Hyunji laid her head on his chest and hugged him.
"Thank you." She felt him run his fingers through her hair.
She consciously relaxed her tense muscles as she held her boyfriend close. His warmth against her skin was enough to calm her nerves. Just being in his presence was enough to make her feel at ease.
Jungkook knew words could't fix her situation but if he could offer just an ounce of comfort he would lay there all night embracing her in his arms.
______________
11:03PM
A movie played in the background as Hyunji dozed off in Jungkooks arms.
"Babe, baby?" Jungkook gently nudged his girlfriend.
"Mmm?" Hyunji opened her eyes slowly.
"It's getting late, Ji. Do you want to just go upstairs or you want to go home?"
Hyunji sighed loudly, "I want to stay but I think I should just go home. I can't miss school again either."
"Okay. Do you want to eat something?"
"Maybe just ramen, I can eat it in the car. You need to get to bed. I'm sorry, kook, I know you have school too-"
"Don't apologize. I'm always gonna be here for you, I don't care what time or what's going on I will be there for you." He kissed her forehead.
"Thank you." Hyunji said.
She followed her boyfriend into the kitchen and sat at the barstool by the counter. He went into the pantry and got her favorite flavor and put it in the microwave. Jungkook was wrapped up in his thoughts as he leaned on the counter looking at his girlfriend.
"Babe," Jungkook started, "I just want to apologize again. When I was mad you weren't telling your parents about us I didn't realize-"
"Jungkook, you don't need to bring that up. I'm not even thinking of it." Hyunji shook her head.
I bet a few of us have parents that would react this way. . . lol
