Chapter Three
Indie's POV
"Indie, it's ridiculous. I'm not buying you a brand new luggage set when we have a perfectly good one you can use here."
"Mom, I can't use that one. It was Nora's. It wouldn't feel right." I said.
"Indie, you have got to move on. You can't let the accident and Nora's death haunt you forever. You are using the luggage set we have here and that's final."
I sighed, then turned around and went up to my room.
Why couldn't I move on?
I laid down on my bed and suddenly my world was spinning. I shut my eyes, trying to block out the memories.
"Indie! Come on, slowpoke. My gynecologist appointment is in 20 minutes. Don't you want to find out if you'll have a niece or a nephew?" Nora asked me, placing one hand on her belly.
"No!" I shouted.
"Why not?" She asked me.
"Because the baby will take up all of your time. You won't spend time with me anymore."
"Oh Indie. Come here." She said, hugging me.
"The baby will take up a lot of my time but I won't forget about you. I'll always have time for you. You're my little sister."
I hugged her.
"Now, let's go. We're going to be late."
Nora drove faster than usual. She was speeding around a corner when suddenly-WHAM!- a drunk driver hit us.
"Nora!" I screamed.
Silence.
"NORA! Nora, answer me! Answer me, please!" I yelled, crying.
I tried to find her pulse but I couldn't find one. I grabbed Nora's cellphone and called 911.
"Hello?" A man said.
"Hi. Um, my name is Indie Johannan, I'm 12 years old and my sister and I have just been in a car crash and my sister isn't answering me and I can't find her pulse and she's pregnant please send help." I said, starting to cry.
"Can you tell me where you are?"
"I'm at the intersection across from Lakeside High School and Fairfield neighborhood."
"Ok, Indie, I have ambulances, and the police on their way. I need you to stay calm and stay where you are."
My tears turned into sobs. The police men were the first to arrive.
"Hi, Indie, my name is Officer Eric. My partner here is Office Ryan. Can you tell us what happened?"
"We were on our way to the gynecologist to find out the gender of my sister's baby but a drunk driver hit us." I told Officer Eric.
"Where is your sister now, Indie?"
"She's still in the car. She's not answering me and I couldn't find a pulse." I said.
When the officers heard that, they rushed over to the drivers seat.
"Ryan, call the fire department . We won't be able to get her out of here."
I let out a sob when I heard that.
"Is- is my sister dead?" I asked Officer Eric.
He avoided the question.
"Is there a number I can reach your parents at? They need to be here." Officer Eric said.
While he called my parents, the ambulances and fire truck arrived.
The firemen got out the jaws of life and cut away the metal surrounding my sister. They lifted her out of the car and onto a stretcher. The medics told me I needed to ride with them to the hospital. I needed to tell them my sisters information.
"Hi Indie. My name is Leah. My team and I are going to try and save your sister today. Can you tell me your sisters full name?" Leah asked me.
"Nora Grace Johannan. Can I ask you a question?" I said.
"Of course."
"Is my sister dead?"
"No. It was very faint but we were able to find a heartbeat." She said.
"Now, can you tell me how old your sister is?"
"22. Will my parents meet us at the hospital?"
"Yes. Do you know how far along your sister is?"
"We were going to find out the gender today, so maybe 4 months. Is the man who hit us dead?"
"Yes, he died instantly. Do you know your sisters blood type?"
"No."
The ride to the hospital went fast. My parents met us at the emergency room.
"Indie, oh thank god, Indie you're safe." My mom said, hugging me tightly.
"Indie, where's Nora?" My dad asked.
I pointed to the ambulance, the medics rolling her through the doors. A team of nurses and doctors met them.
My dad rushed towards them.
"Sir, I'm sorry you need to stay back here. Your daughter is in emergency surgery to try and save her and her baby. We'll notify you if anything happens." A male nurse said, holding my dad back.
We stood there defeated. We sat in the waiting room for 6 hours before we heard anything.
"Mr and Mrs. Johannan?" A nurse called out.
My parents jumped up and ran to the nurses counter.
"We were able to stabilize your daughter. She's in room 22. You can go see her if you like, but only one person in the room at a time and in 10 minute increments."
We rushed to Nora's room and my dad went in first. My mom went in after him and finally, it was my turn.
"Nora?"
"Indie, is that you?"
"Yes. Nora I'm so sorry. This was all by fault. If I hadn't been complaining and we had left earlier this wouldn't have happened. Nora I'm sorry." I said, crying.
"Indie, stop. This is not your fault. No matter what happens to me I want you to know that. This is not your fault."
That was the last thing Nora said to me before her heart monitor flatlined. Doctors rushed in and tried to save her but it was to late. Nora was gone.
I sat up in bed, gasping for air. I wiped tears out of my eyes. I took deep breaths, then went downstairs and got Nora's luggage set.
As I laid my clothes in it, I talked to Nora.
"Nora? I hope it's ok that I'm using your luggage set. I know how much you loved it. I go to boarding school in a few days. They're going to teach me how to drive."
My eyes watered.
"Nora, I'm going to learn how to drive. I'm going to learn for you. I know you want me to move on. I'm trying, Nora. I'm trying my best."
When I got my clothes packed, I zipped up the suitcases and pushed them to the corner of my room.
"Indie! Time to go." My mother called to me.
I walked downstairs.
"Where's dad?" I asked.
"He's working late again. Get your luggage and put it in the trunk of the car."
He wasn't working late. He was avoiding me. Nora had always been his favorite and ever since the accident he avoided me like I had the plague.
I put my luggage in the car, and sat down in the passenger seat.
We drive to the train station in silence. When we got there my mom helped me get my luggage to the correct platform.
"Bye Indie. Be safe." She said, kissing my forehead then left.
I waited for 30 minutes before my train pulled up.
"Ticket?" The conductor asked.
I handed him my ticket, and he showed me to my seat. I thanked him and sat down.
I was in a private car. There was a table and chairs and a little sofa to sit on. There was a bin for me to put my luggage in. I put my luggage up then sat down on the sofa, crossing my legs underneath me.
I began to read the book I had brought with me. I was halfway through my book when the stewardess came around with the meal cart for dinner.
"Miss, would you like anything?" She asked.
"A salad, no dressing with an apple please. And a water if you have any." I said.
She handed me my food, then moved on to the next passenger.
I set my book down and moved to the table to eat.
I pushed cheese and croutons over to the side and picked up plain lettuce with my fork. I ate a few bites then put my fork down.
I read my book while I ate my apple. Once I finished my apple, I put the core on my mostly full salad bowl then threw it in the trash can.
I took a sip of water and closed my book. I put my headphones into my ears and laid down on the sofa and tried to sleep.
I was woken up by my stomach grumbling and the smell of bacon and eggs.
The stewardess came back around with the meal cart for breakfast.
"What can I get you, Miss?" She asked.
I looked over the cart. I was craving an omelette but that had too many calories.
"Just oatmeal and a water, thanks." I said.
"Would you like any fruit or cinnamon sugar to top it with?"
"A couple blueberries and strawberries would be great." I said, with a smile.
She handed me my bowl of oatmeal and water bottle and left.
I ate my oatmeal as we slowly pulled into the train station.
"Ladies and Gentlemen we are arriving in Sacramento, California. If you need to get off at this stop, flag down one of our stewards and they will assist you. Next stop is San Francisco, California. San Francisco is our last stop before turning around and heading back to Denver, Colorado." The train driver announced over a loudspeaker.
I threw away my oatmeal and moved over to the sofa to lay down. I picked up my book and read the last few chapters of it while I waited for the train to get to San Francisco.
A few hours later the train driver made another announcement.
"Ladies and Gentlemen we are arriving in San Francisco, California. If you need to get off at this stop, flag down one of our stewards and they will assist you. This is our last stop. After this we will be heading back to Denver, Colorado." The train driver announced.
I flagged down the same stewardess that had given me dinner and breakfast. She helped me carry my luggage to the doors that I would exit the train from. I thanked her and gave her $20.
"Here." I said, handing it to her. "Thank you for the delicious meals and for helping me carry my luggage."
She smiled and thanked me, then left to go help someone else.
When I stepped out of the train station, I called a cab. When my cab arrived, I put my luggage in the trunk and got in the backseat.
"Hi, can you take me to Miss Katrina's School of Driving? It's a boarding school." I told the driver.
He grunted and took off. After 10 minutes or so we arrived.
"Your fare is $8.76."
I gave him $15.
"Keep the change!" I said, getting my luggage out of the back.
He just grunted and took off.
I stood outside of the gates, looking up at the school. It was massive. I grabbed my luggage and made my way to the security guards shack.
"Name?" He said, sounding bored.
"Indie Johannan. I'm here for orientation." I said.
He looked over his list then opened the gate.
"When you get to the front doors go to the left. Someone will greet you and send you to the correct table." He said.
I walked through the gates and up the winding driveway. I stood in front of the front doors and slowly opened one.
I walked down a hallway and was greeted by a perky volunteer.
"Hi, I'm Ashley! Is this your first year here?" She said.
"I'm new here."
"Alright. Just go down this hall to the left. There you'll get your room assignment and other information." She said, still perky.
I headed down the long hallway and saw a table with a few people around it.
I walked up to it and was greeted by friendly older lady.
"Hi! Can I have your name please and I'll get you your room assignment and meal ticket." She said, just as perky as Ashley.
"Indie Johannan."
"Here is your information packet. It has anything and everything you want to know about the school in it. This sheet right here is your room assignment. You're in room #22. Here are your keys and here's a map. Your room is this black dot I've circled. To get to it just go up the elevator here to floor 2 and go to the right." A lady said, handing me a folder, a few pieces of paper, and a set of keys.
My heart dropped.
"Room 22? Is there any possibility I can switch rooms with someone? It's a very long story but 22 is a number with a lot of bad history behind it." I told her.
"I'm sorry but we're full. Unless another student is willing to trade with you, you have to be in room 22."
I looked around me trying to spot who looked the friendliest. My eyes landed on a girl wearing gray sweats and a Rolling Stones shirt.
"Hi, I'm Indie. What's your name?" I asked, smiling.
"Khushi."
"Ok so Khushi I have a really strange favor to ask but can we switch rooms? I got room 22 and 22 is not a good number for me." I told her, praying she would say yes.
"Sure. I'm in room 26 so we'll be roomies." She said.
We walked back over to the older lady to get her to switch our rooms. She filed some paperwork, then told us about orientation.
"Now it's 2:15 pm right now. Orientation starts at 3:00 pm. You need to be in the auditorium at 2:50 pm. The auditorium is just down this hallway." She said, pointing left.
Khushi and I switched keys and maps, then walked to the elevator together.
"Khushi thank you so much for switching rooms with me. I'd tell you why I hate the number 22 but that is a story for a different day."
"Oh it was no problem. I just hope whoever is in room 24 is nice." She said, stepping off the elevator and heading towards our room.
"We'll probably meet them soon enough. Would you want to walk down to orientation together?"
"Yes! Text me when you're ready and I'll meet you by the elevators."
We exchanged numbers then I walked down to my room. I opened the door and looked it over.
It was a nice room for a boarding school. It had a single bed, a closet, a bathroom with a shower, a dresser, a desk, and a couple of chairs.
I set my luggage down and went to go take a shower.
When I got out it was 2:30 pm. Since I was short on time I just towel dried my hair and braided it. I slipped on a black cami and jeans with a pair of black ballet flats. I threw on some makeup and was heading out the door when my phone dinged.
To: Indie
From: Khushi
I'm waiting by the elevators. Are you almost ready?
To: Khushi
From: Indie
I'm walking out of my room now
I quickly walked over to the elevators and saw Khushi.
We got in the elevator and went down to the check in table. We turned left and headed towards the auditorium.
When we got to the auditorium we took seats towards the back left. As soon as we sat down, the lights dimmed and orientation began.
