James
James glanced at his wrist-watch, then to the door and then back to his watch. It was dawning eight o'clock on Monday morning and there was still no sight of Harper. After Saturday's commotion, he couldn't entirely blame her for not wanting to. He'd kindly dropped her off at her apartment without a word coming from her pretty little mouth. Not that he hadn't anticipated she would be stubborn with him for picking her up and carrying her out of the coffee shop against her will.
Out of boredom, he began to roll a pencil from out of the pot across the desk hoping it would distract his restless thoughts. But it was accomplishing nothing. What if she never came back? What she quit for real? Had he taken things too far?
The door ahead suddenly opened inwards, bringing him to reality as he sat up straight. His heart was racing. His hair stood up on the ends of his arms as he expected to see Harper heading into the office but instead was immediately disgruntled to watch Katherine, an old fling, enter the space.
James sighed. "What are you doing here, Katherine?"
Katherine sashayed over, her red mini handbag hanging off her right arm as she pursed her lips playfully. "Baby, I came to see you. Especially after the other day," she said, smiling from ear to ear.
He cocked his right brow. "Oh, of course, you're just the person I wanted to see right now," he said sarcastically as he diverted his attention to his unopened laptop.
She seemed to ignore his detest as she continued blissfully into his office, "Oh, James. You can pretend or you like but you know that what we have is special, undeniable and electric." She stopped at the head of his desk, before she leaned in placing both hands on her desk, deliberately sporting her cleavage into sight. James was unable to stop himself, admiring but trying not to, dash his eyes across her D-cup breasts filled in a lacy red bra. "You can't tell me you're not wanting to take me over this desk right now," she muttered, dangerously smirking as she caught his guilty eyes.
"Just, stop," he said quickly, opening his laptop to address his email inbox. "Haven't you got any thing else better to do?"
Katherine shook her head smiling. "Oh, honey. One day you'll come crawling into my arms and you'll never want me to go."
"Just go Katherine," he pleaded, fed up with her antics.
"Why don't you come with me?" she teased.
James shook his head. "Just go-"
He was interrupted as there was a nervous knock on the door. Then appeared Harper, her brown locks cascading down her shoulders, her white blouse tucked in her pencil skirt and that suggestive habit she had of biting her bottom lip. James immediately then stood up.
"I can come back," Harper said, turning on her heel.
"No, it's fine," James objected, "she was just going anyway," he added with an ounce of authority.
Katherine rolled her eyes playfully as James led her towards the door. She stopped at Harper, smiling with mischief. "Well, aren't you adorable," she said before she turned to James and kissed him on the lips. "See you soon, baby." Before she headed out the office.
James noticed Harper look shamefully away towards the floor, refusing to give him contact as they stood there for a minute or two in silence.
"She's just a friend," he found himself saying.
"It's not my business," Harper muttered, yet again refusing to give him eye contact.
James uncomfortably placed his hands into his trouser pockets. "I didn't expect you to come in again," he said quietly.
"I had no choice. I have bills to pay. And I haven't found another job to go into yet," she replied, "so is there anything I need to do before I carry out my tasks?" she asked, again not meeting his troubled eyes.
"Erm, yes, I need you to contact these people," he informed her, heading back to his desk and grabbing a slim folder. "All the stuff is in there," he said, feeling even more awkward by the tenseness.
"Cool," she responded calmly taking the folder off him and heading back to her desk.
As he watched her walk back down the short corridor towards her desk, an ounce of guilt swarmed through his veins. Why did he have to be a dick like that? It saddened him that she was appearing distant to him as if she despised the sight of him. No woman had ever treated him like that. Why did he kiss her? Why did he have to make things so awkward? Why did he yearn after her? What was it about her that was so different?
__
Harper
By lunch Harper was tired, so, she had even opted to take residence at her desk instead of residing in the cafeteria. She hated today. Things were left so unsaid. And just a friend? Great, she thought. Another reason to feel like a fool knowing full well that, that woman was by no means just a friend. Harper could see the appeal. The sleek black hair, the model like figure and natural beauty. Another reason why she hated herself for kissing him back.
Five minutes after her break he called her into his office. "Are those emails done?" he asked firmly, without once looking up as he continued to type upon his laptop.
"Yes," she replied.
"Go grab me a coffee," he ordered, not looking up again.
"Okay."
Harper left his office, a little confused as to his blatant rudeness but refused to dwell on it any longer as she grabbed her coat from behind her desk and made her way to his favoured coffeeshop.
After grabbing his order, Harper left the coffeeshop into the crowd of people passing through the street. Rain began falling from the sky causing a commotion of people hurriedly dispersing to seek shelter. Harper passed through, disgruntled that she hadn't a hood on her coat and had been rudely shoved a couple times as she went through. What made matters worse was when a car drove past the curb, she was near and splashed a puddle all up her.
"Great," she groaned to herself, inspecting herself.
The journey back to the top floor she was vexed in her own thoughts that as she left the lift shaft, she missed the sight of another presence heading her way, and knocked the coffee into them.
"Fuck," they hissed, retracting back.
Harper gasped, quickly trying to attend. "I'm so sorry, I-I didn't see you-"
-"Really, Miss Daniels?" the voice barked.
"I'm so sorry."
"Just get me a tissue," he ordered, pinching the end of his tie and shirt away from his torso. "Was you trying to scorch me?"
"Honestly, I didn't see you coming," she defended herself, grabbing a bunch of tissues from the tissue box on her desk.
James sighed. "It won't do. Just go grab me a spare shirt from my office. It will be in the cupboard far on the right."
Harper obeyed quickly heading for his office to grab the shirt. Finding the cupboard, she searched through the doors until she opened the far two revealing a coat hanger carrying a white shirt. As she headed back to the corridor, she almost nearly tripped on her own feet at the sight of his naked back. He turned revealing more, defined abs and a blatantly obvious happy trail peeking through.
She bit her bottom lip as she held out the shirt trying her best to look away.
"No need to be shy," she heard him mutter. Harper swallowed as she stood back a couple steps trying her best to watch as he slid it across his bare shoulders and began to button the shirt up, hiding away his chiselled chest.
He stepped forward challenging her as she took two steps back. "You seem so anxious, Miss Daniels," he said gently, "do I frighten you?"
"N-No," she stuttered, her feet halting as she collided with the corridor wall.
He stopped inches away from her, before he rested his hand above her on the wall caving them in. "We haven't really spoken about that kiss, have we? I know you...enjoyed it," he teased softly, "your hands were all over me. Your body was aching for me." His eyes studied hers. Harper's heart was racing fast. "You want me to kiss you right now, don't you?" he added gently.
His fingers touched her cheek before he slowly leaned in. His lips met her earlobe as he whispered, "I bet you wouldn't be able to help yourself if I...did this." Then she felt his hand on her left thigh, slowly sliding up towards her pounding intimate core. He didn't stop there as his lips began trailing across her jaw towards her neckline as his fingers dangerously went further towards her throbbing core.
Harper didn't want him to stop. She felt alive. Excited. Anxious. Hungry. All the feelings at once. "W-wait," she called out, sliding out of his space. "This is wrong, I can't," she added.
"Why? What's so wrong?" he asked, "resisting will only make it worser," he calmly added, smirking as he shoved his hands into her pockets watching her like a hawk as she scurried towards the lift.
