Chapter 49- HeartBroken
The intercom beeped was once more before it went silent.
Harper didn't move an inch neither did she blink. Nor did she have the strength to want to. Considering what she had just heard, there was no words that could express the pain that it inflicted upon her heart. Harper moved her chair back from the desk. She felt completely numb that it felt like something else rather than her mind was controlling her to move.
Harper didn't want pity nor did she want a spare a tear. Instead she just sat there for a moment. Her hands seemed to move towards the back of her neck where she unclasped the sliver chain. It fell into her hands, the coldness biting at her skin, no longer had she seen admiration for it. She hated it.
She heard a rolling cloud of conversation enter the area. The same woman Harper had met before followed James, her hips swaying as she struck to a stop. James parted his lips, his eyes immediately falling upon Harper who remained seated and her face unreadable.
"Miss Daniels?" James said. "What are you doing here? I told Samuels you needn't to come in." Harper could see how he was on edge by how his shoulders tensed and the sheer guilt he tried to disguise upon his face. The woman beside him who stood posing as if preparing for a member of the press to jump right out and snap a photo spoke out. "I should be off. Till next time, darling." Her lips curling.
"Wait." Harper said, the first words to leave her mouth. James looked towards Katherine who shrugged her shoulders as she remained where she was.
"Harper?" James mumbled.
Harper stood up pushing her chair forward, still the necklace gripped between her fingers. She could see how the colour drained from James' face. He looked nervous. Harper moved around the desk heading towards James.
-"Harper." He muttered once again.
SLAP!
James' face swung to the left, his cheek reddening on the sight. Even Katherine was shocked at the unexpected event. James said nothing...
"I don't want your pity." Harper said as she took his hand in hers, opening it up to drop the necklace. James looked down to the necklace, his fingers slowly gripping down on it. Harper shook her head in defeat. "I hope you got what you wanted. I really do." Then stepping back she headed back to her desk to grab her bag.
James watched as Harper headed to the lifts, not another word spared. That strange feeling covered his heart, not even the slight sensation of pain inflicted on his cheek bothered him only that Harper walked away.
"Well that was new." Katherine blurted out as soon as Harper had left.
"Shut up!" He spat. He gripped the necklace between his grasp, then he added. "What did you do?"
"What do you mean?" Katherine innocently replied then she added. "Oh! I might have accidentally put the intercom on. Why?" James clenched his fists as he turned to face her. "You b****. Was that your f**king plan? Ruin everything!"
"I thought you said it wasn't true. You sounded pretty sure that it was only for sex." Katherine objected.
James threw his hands in the air, "Just get out! You got what you wanted. Just go!" He barked. Katherine pursed her lips shrugging her shoulders as she headed for the lifts.
"Don't worry, James. It's worth it, you'll get the deal. So lighten up." She said as she entered the lift.
James watched as the doors shut. His anger immediately rose and he thrashed a fist into the wall behind him. It just so happened to cause the glass logo of his company to smash into fragments onto the floor. James dropped to his knees. Everything he had said, she had heard.
~~~
Harper got into her car. Her hands gripped the steering wheel, her palm still stinging from the fact she had slapped him. She wasn't usually the one to be aggressive. Harper couldn't help herself, she hated the sight of him. Hated that her heart was aching. But still she had not shed a tear yet. Harper was numb. The words he had said.
Naïve, stupid. He didn't even consider her as a woman, more like a little girl. It was only a stupid fling too? So just for the sex.
Well he was right, she was stupid. She allowed him to manipulate her, take away something she had protected for someone she loved. How stupid! Of course he would have. He was rich! Like money, he thinks he buy or have anything. Harper should have took the first time it didn't work out as a hint. Men like that are in for one thing.
Harper shook her head before she started the car, she took one last glance at the skyscraper before pressing hard down on the pedal zooming off the carpark.
Instead of heading home, she drove to a park. She got out slamming the door behind her as she stormed over to the bench facing opposite to the lake, the serenity and tranquillity was spoiled as Harper broke down. Tears swarmed down her face as she held her hands against her chest falling down onto her knees. No one was about for the time being, she was alone. Isolated. Just like how she felt he had done to her.
The one man she fell in love with, broke her heart. The wind blew gently upon the back of her neck, her hair caressing her face on the one side. She cried falling forward, tearing her hands through the grass,disturbing the dirt. The sound was hoarse like croaking in the back of her throat. All that emotion she had kept in flooded like a river bursting its banks.
At her last sniffle, Harper stood up picking up a rock as she did and with great force threw it far out into lake. She shouted as she did. "F**k you, Brewer. F**k you!" Then picked up another rock throwing it further causing another slight splash in the water. Her eyes were red and she had grass stains upon her skirt from where she had kneeled. But she couldn't have cared less. Couldn't have cared less.
Harper sat on that bench, not even the bitter coldness nipping at her skin could have made her feel a thing. Harper focused on nothing. Her neck felt empty without the presence of his necklace, felt as if that one moment never happened. Honestly she should have realised he would have been good at the game. He was a player. They loved playing with hearts and like he said,it was a game, a game that he knew all the shortcuts and bonuses to entrap a woman's heart. Her heart. You know its funny. Harper actually thought she had a chance with him. Like a real chance.
Cloud cover in the sky caused precipitation to fall. Harper looked up the sky, blinking as the rain fell upon her face. Her own tears followed. She loved that man and he only trampled on her heart in spite.
For the moment it was just her and the rain clinging onto her skin. Her shirt was soaked through and her hair clung to the side of her face. Harper just wanted to sit here to not to move.
"Harper!" A voice shouted.
Harper stood up turning to see James heading over, his own suit was drenched from the rain and his hair stuck to the front of his forehead.
Harper laughed coldly. "Oh great! Come to save the day, have you?"
James shook his head, "Harper, I..."-
"I don't want to hear excuses. You made it clear on your intentions! I should have known! Me, the innocent girl! Let's see about getting in her panties! That's what it was all about for you!" Harper shouted over the downpour of rain over them. James shook his head again attempting to move closer.
"No!" Harper threatened holding her hands out as she stepped back. "Don't come near me!"
"Harper, please. It wasn't..."-
"Wasn't what? True? You broke my heart James!" She yelled. "I don't want to hear no more excuses. I should have figured it out. You didn't like me to be seen around with you in public nor did you ever say I love you. And you were sleeping around?"
"No, this was before I even got serious with you!" James objected. "Harper, I didn't mean what I said. I had too!"
"Had to? Was I not more important?" Harper snarled then added. "Forget it. I don't want to hear." Harper moved back towards the car but instead of climbing back in, she took the car keys out of her bag and threw them at him. "Here! Your car back!"
James caught the keys refusing to give up as he followed her. "Harper, I don't need the car. I need you!" He admitted.
Harper halted, rain trickled off the end of her nose as she closed her eyes for a second before she muttered. "Don't lie to me. Don't...I won't be manipulated by you ever again." Then she carried on walking out into the road heading for the main road.
"Harper!" He cried after her.
