Chapter 3

I went to the lunchroom after math class. I went through the line picking up some of the most disgusting food you've ever eaten, including stale, cardboard like pizza, shriveled up carrots, unsweetened applesauce (We all know it tastes disgusting not sweetened) and the only thing good, a bag of Doritos chips. Along with chocolate milk and a carton of apple juice.

After basically holding my breath throughout the whole lunch line to not smell the wretched chicken and bbq pizza (I actually have this at my school. It's terrible) I walked down to my table with Nia. We had a few other people sit there but I only actually talked to Nia, I was kind of the outcast. She and all her friends sat there, while I was one of the two boys who sat there. He was a shy person never talked to me, never knew his name either.

I made Nia learn sign language so we could talk without talking. Well I asked her too and she found me reasoning dumb, but after she learned it she said that it was a good idea. And that's how I found out Mr. Flynn could sign. As I was signing to Nia in band class, hoping no one knew what we were talking about. Mr. Flynn called my name and said "Mr.Chester will you please stop telling Nia that you need help on your math paper." I remember looking at him dumbfounded, all he did was smile and continue class. From then on if I wanted to talk to him, all I had to do was sign and no one knew what we were talking about.

I sat at the table silently eating. Watching as everyone around me was talking to one another, expect that weird boy, maybe he doesn't talk. Maybe he just doesn't want to talk. Well, there's no harm in asking.

'Do you sign?' I asked pointing my attention to him.

'Yes! I never knew anyone else could sign in this school. See I have a hard time speaking, can't really make any noise other than soft squeaks so I stopped trying and learned how to sign.' We he sure is a handful of words.

'Wow! I thought you were just shy and didn't want to talk because I saw other people talking to you.'

'I can hear them I just can't respond. So I find it better to just sign'

'I get that. Actually, Nia signs too. I wanted to be able to talk to people without others knowing Mr.Flynn, the band director, he does too'

'Really?!? That's like. . . three more people than I thought in this school that can sign'

I laughed aloud 'Well I guess now you can talk to someone I'm happy to talk anytime!'

'Thank you so much. Uh, what's your name again?'

'Ace! What's yours?'

'Leo'

'I like it'

'Thank you'

"Ok stop the chattering you two!" Nia yelled getting attention from the whole table.

"We weren't bothering you all. I was just talking to Leo"

"Who?"

I pointed towards the boy across the table. "He signs too"

Nia raised her eyebrows signing to the boy across the table. I watched as the two got into a good conversation. Telling each other about themselves while Nia said few thing aloud so the other girls knew more about him. As I was watching the conversation I realized something.

'Wait! Wait! Wait' I signed frantically pushing Nia away leaning towards Leo. 'This means you knew what Nia and I were talking about during lunch. Since I assumed that no one else signed I wasn't scared of other people knowing my secrets. What I'm asking is how much do you know?'

He signed the word for laughing since he couldn't do so in real life.

'Well, I know that you have a crush on Levi Chase, you think he is "hot out of his mind" and that he is coming over here right now' I gasped this means he knows I'm gay! Only my parents and Nia knew, well and now Leo. Wait did he say Levi was coming over here?

"Hey, Ace!" I panicked he didn't give me enough time to think about what I was going to say.

"Oh, hey Levi!"

"So I was wondering when would be a good time for you to help me with my violin?"

"Well, anything is ok with me. Expect Tuesday and Thursday. I have marching band those days, Although you would know that since, well, your . . . in marching. . . band." He laughed at my response.

"Well, yes. I do know that. Is Wednesday ok? My mom works later after work on Wednesday so it will only be me and you there"

"Yeah! That will be fantastic. Although I have to ask my parents, though I'm sure it will be ok."

"Great! Thank you so much. Also," He grabbed the paper out of his bag, sheet music. "Is this to complicated to play as a beginner?" I looked at the music, it was the same sheet music that I had used to make sure my rhythms in my music, that I composed, were right.

"Well, since you have played other instruments, you should be ok, but I will bring over some easier music to play, I want to know that you get a good grip on it."

"Ok. Thank you so much, how much should I pay you?"

"Oh, nothing. You can not pay me. I will accept payment in you being good at playing the violin. That's good enough payment for me."

"Are you sure?"

"Positive."
