20. Wrecking Ball

I stumbled down to the reception area. Stumbled because I was used to roaming around in bathroom slippers and my high heels were pricking like hell. To add to that, I was feeling extremely touchy about the whole saree thing.

Kimayra was not to be seen. It seemed like she had hurried straight to the auditorium. Trying not to be upset with her, I followed suit after signing the attendance sheet.

I went to the auditorium which was decked up like a wedding hall. No, better than a wedding hall.

There were big colourful arches in the entrance. Above the line of arches, was a big banner with the words "WELCOME TO MIRA'S ANNUAL FAREWELL NIGHT".

The moment I entered the hall it was a different vibe altogether. Festoons, balloons, lights and colorful streamers adorned every corner of the hall.

A guy from group D was DJing and he had already started the music. Everyone was swaying to Ghungroo.

The centre of the hall was left open for dancing. Chairs and tables were lined up. It was a buffet dinner and there was a humongous spread of various dishes on the table.

This was a much bigger spread than I'd ever seen at home. I tried to count the number of dishes but gave up after a while.

The main program had not yet started so people were either standing in groups and chatting or dancing or standing in line to grab a soda. I joined the big soda queue as I looked around trying to spot Kimayra or Ishaan or Yuvan (not!).

To my surprise Yuvan was standing with his guy friends and chatting. Rakul did not seem to be near him.

I scanned the area trying to spot the snake and I finally saw her. I couldn't believe it. She was actually wearing a spaghetti strapped blouse. Her saree was a dazzling pink and it was clinging to her like second skin. But my jaw dropped when I saw she was talking to..

"KIMAYRA!" I burst out.

But the music was too loud for anybody to hear me.

What the hell was this?

Why was Kimayra talking to Rakul?

I was totally flabbergasted.

So that's why she had left me behind! Maybe she had finally decided that she was too cool to be hanging out with a misfit.

But I got distracted when Naira and a guy from group A, came to the front and announced the commencement of the event.

Everyone cheered loudly. The program began with the invocation song and then all the other performances followed.

After the entertainment was over, everybody geared up for the actual fun. People either headed to the buffet table or to the dance floor. The disco lights came on and there was hell lot of shouting and cheering.

I looked around me.

It was farewell night. There was food, music and dance. Everybody was celebrating.

My seniors were enjoying the last official celebration of their school life.

Everywhere I looked, I could see vibrant outfits and happy faces. The auditorium was swathed in a hundred different colours.

What was I thinking? Coming here to this big gaga event.

I should have stayed back in the hostel. This was such a stupid idea.

I had to leave this wretched place. Yeah. That was it.

I had had enough of everybody's drama. I was so done with high school right then.

My so called boyfriend had ditched me and my two friends were practically ignoring me.

I was miserable.

And as usual, I did not know what the heck was going on in my life or how I was going to solve anything.

As I proceeded to hurry out of the hall, I saw Naira walk by with a filled plate in her hands.

"Hey Hina! You wanna try those chicken wings? They're amazing!"

I was in such a foul mood that I wanted to grab her plate and dump it on her head.

But I said nothing and just walked away.

"Hey!" she yelled after me, "What's wrong?"

I ignored her and kept walking. Soon, I was out of the hall and rushed to the bathroom.

But the bathroom attached to the auditorium was outrageously crowded. At least thirty girls were inside, either adjusting their sarees or slathering on their tenth layer of lip gloss.

I left the bathroom in a huff and decided to go down to the bathroom in the basement.

I hurried down. The basement was totally deserted. I rushed straight to the bathroom, went into a stall, locked the door and had a complete meltdown.

Why was my life such a mess?!

What had I done wrong to Yuvan that he dumped me? Oh yeah, it wasn't a dumping. It was a winding up. Winding up of a game. Now, he had gone back to a bitch who had done nothing all her life, except making other people's life miserable.

And yet he loved her. And when he could love a bitch, how could I have expected him to be anything other than a dick? I was the real fool here.

So basically, Yuvan had winded me up, Ishaan had been indifferent with me since the Rishikesh trip, and now even Kimayra was avoiding me.

But why was she?

Had Rakul or Naira or anybody else tattled about me to her? And had she believed them?

If so, my story was officially over!!
