18. Bad Blood
I couldn't believe it. No. There had to be some mistake.
Just then Yuvan spotted me.
"Hey Hina", he said. Rakul turned and saw me too. She had a smirk on her face.
I turned and ran as fast as I could, with one thought ringing in my head.
It. Was. Over.
"Hina!" I heard him calling. I didn't stop. "Hina. Wait!"
He ran after me yelling at me to stop.
He managed to get to me. He grabbed my arm and pulled me over.
"Hina, please listen to me" he said guiltily but not unhappily.
"Get away from me!" I said and wrenched my arm free.
"Hina, it's just that Rakul..", he began.
"YUVAN! ARE YOU KIDDING ME?!" I lost it completely, "
Yuvan looked as if he had anticipated this, "Dude! I understand, all right?"
"NO YOU DON'T!" I cried, "WHAT ABOUT THE FAREWELL?"
"What of it?"
"You are so busted Yuvan! I was such a fool", I said.
"Hina, wait I can explain".
"Oh, can you?"
"Yes. Please".
"Okay Yuvan", I said, "Start explaining".
"Thank you. See, Hina. The games period is always fun. But when the bell rings you have to go back to class. The bell has rung for us Hina. It's time to leave the playground".
"So you were playing with me?" I shrieked.
"Hina, come on man", he said shamelessly. "It's just, see.. now is not a very good time for me. Our time's up. We're winding this".
"You mean you are winding this!" I said.
"Hina, come on man! Don't be a chump. I really like you. Rishikesh was so much fun. We can still be friends. I'm waiting to see you in that saree on farewell night", he said very casually.
"Get lost Yuvan. If you stand here, I'll slap you" I said gritting my teeth.
He sighed and opened his mouth to speak again but I cut him, "Get lost!"
When he made no attempt to move, I just turned and walked away.
He didn't call me or ask me to stop.
I went straight to the hostel, to my room and fished out the pictures of me and Yuvan from Rishikesh and came back.
On my way, I could hear classes going on everywhere, "The quit India movement of 1942"...."Sin theta divided by cos theta"... "The gravitational force acting on the surface of the earth"... "When the oxide of iron is heated on the blast furnace"...
I ran to the bathroom, went straight into a stall and flushed the pictures down the toilet.
Yeah, the Jab We Met technique. And it actually kind of helped.
The anger was gone but now tears started rolling down my cheeks. I was so upset, I could..umm..I don't know. I'd already done most things that people do when they're upset.
I didn't go back to class. I just stayed there inside for the whole period with my hands on my face, which is too much for the level of hygiene they have in there.
Nobody came after me to check where I was or why I was in the bathroom.
Nobody even came to find out I wasn't in class.
That's when it hit me on the face. The only person in this school who was bothered about other people's business was me.
Nobody will run after you because nobody gives a fuck. You have to deal with your own shit.
After classes ended, I stumbled back to the hostel and managed to collapse on my bed.
About an hour later I heard the door being pushed open and I sat up.
Kimayra peeped in, "What happened to you?" she asked pressing the you in particular, "You were not in the lab class, you skipped the business maths test. What's up?"
"It's over", I said and added after a pause, "With Yuvan".
Kimayra looked at me for a second and then gave a big sigh.
"Oh", she said finally.
I was flabbergasted. I was here after half a day of melting down and all my so called best friend had for me was an 'Oh'.
"What?" I said impatiently.
She finally came inside and shut the door behind her, "Hina, listen to me, you're my friend and I love you. But I gotta tell you this. I saw this coming".
"What?!" I asked shocked, "What does that mean?"
"Dude!" she put her hands on her hip and looked around the room in despair.
I expected a burst out. I was not disappointed.
"All you did for the last few weeks is run around that stupid guy. He wasn't even into you. He was just using you to get back at Rakul. It was obvious".
I sat there like I had been slapped.
"So he was still seeing Rakul?"
"That's right Juliet. Don't tell me you thought Yuvan was serious about you. He seems very decent and all but he played you like a video game", Kimayra said in exasperation and threw her hands up in the air.
I was so annoyed at Kimayra and I really wanted to throw something at her.
"So what do I do now?" I asked her.
"Stop freaking out. It's only a Yuvan Kapoor not Ranbir Kapoor. And anyway I think these Kapoor guys are all hoppers. Even Ranbir dumped Sonam, Deepika and Katrina. Who knows how long this Alia will last?"
"Your sense of humour is terrible", I said darkly.
She thought for a second and then added, "Maybe it is. But it's for the best. What's the point if it's not true on both sides?"
I flared up instantly, "What do you mean both sides? I've liked him for ages".
"No madam. You didn't like him. You liked his popularity. He's the 'it' guy, ain't he?"
I stared at her. I couldn't believe she was talking like that. Though, I couldn't help feeling a little prick. Was she saying the truth? I didn't want to think about it.
"Okay what's the use of worrying now?", she shrugged "Just forget it and try to look at the bright side".
"There isn't one", I snapped.
"Oh there is. Darling, if a girl was able to get your guy from you, she was doing you a favour", she said and put on a all-for-the-best expression.
My eyes were getting wet. Again.
Kimayra's expression finally softened and she came and wrapped her arms around me.
"You really need to forget about it. Just chill", she said.
"You know Kim, I have a problem in life. I can never seem to just chill", I said.
