Chapter 16: Path to Death
"Young lady, would you mind to exchange seats? It's a little too cold for me on the other side." I rubbed my eyes, not knowing that I'd fallen asleep.
I saw an old, frail lady, who seemed to be in her 70s. She had small beady eyes and had bags on one hand.
"Well...all right. I'll exchange seats with you." I spoke in a low tone. "It's warmer here."
"Thank you. The seat's over there, near the doors to the bathroom."
I picked up my items swiftly and made my way to the vacant seat. I placed my things down and took out my phone. 18 missed calls, read the phone. I sighed. So many calls within just an hour. It must be either my father or Angelica.
All of a sudden, the familiar ringtone of my phone was heard. It was my father.
I answered the call.
"Layla, why did you leave the house without my permission? I was so worried about you, do you know that?" my father yelled. "You've been away from home for almost two hours, you better come home!"
"I know you're only worried because there will be no one to teach and care for the baby you and Angelica had, the girl who ruined my family and my life!" I snapped. "I'm never going to go back to that House of Terror ever again. Leave me alone and let me go find Mum!"
"You're going to find Mum? You are going to take your life just for this minor issue? You are just so stubborn! Well, I shan't stop you since you've made up your mind. Go and find your Mum."
"I know you would choose my stepsister over me, that's why you're willing to let me die. And yes, I'm stubborn to take my life because of you. But I've made my choice, and I want to find Mum. Thank you for letting me go, and I'll never forgive you for all that you've done. I'll definitely tell Mum about all your evil deeds. She won't forgive you either."
And there, I hung up.
I just felt sick and tired. Well, at least I severed all ties with my father and he would never find me again. In just an hour or so, I would be where I belonged, with my mother, in heaven. I would no longer be in this miserable place where no one thought about my feelings. I would be at ease up there, and then I would not have to see my father or Angelica's faces again. At least.
Leaning against the windows of the train, I took out a sweet from my bag. Cara's Delight Sweet, it wrote on the wrapper. I took off the wrapper, and stuffed the sweet inside my mouth. Then, I felt more relaxed.
"Dear ladies and gentlemen, the train has arrived in WoodsAce Station. You may disembark from the train now. Thank you." the overhead speaker blasted.
I packed everything I had inside my bag and made my way out of the train. There were people from all walks of life, walking briskly in different directions. Likewise, I made my way towards the exit of the train station. I looked around, and I seemed to be somewhere I had not been before. Trees surrounded the walkways, and the city, if it was, seemed empty and quiet.
Feeling curious, I walked away from the station. I had to get myself to the place which sold the poison. I reached my hand into my pocket, and I found a crumpled piece of paper. There, it wrote an address. "20 WoodsAce Street, Forest of Dungeons", read the paper. Well...since it was in WoodsAce Street, it shouldn't be too far away from the train station. I should ask around.
Just then, a young couple walking hand in hand went past me. The man had a striped T-shirt while the lady was dressed in a bright pink dress. I should ask them for some help.
"Excuse me, do you know where WoodsAce Avenue 20 is?" I asked as politely as I could.
"It's further down the street." the lady replied. "It's getting dark already, are you sure you want to go there? The slopes are steep and there are dangerous animals in the forest. You should go home."
"I...I'm not going home. I...just need the address for a relative who is a...a...a jungle explorer."
After finishing my sentence, I dashed off down the road. Once the couple were out of sight, I stopped running and slowed down. At least I got away with it.
I walked down the dark street. It was deserted and there wasn't a single soul around. I walked along the road, as everywhere was just patches of grass and plants except the road. There wasn't any house or building in sight, and before I knew it, I was far away from the train station already.
As I looked back, I wondered if I really made the right decision to run. What if I get eaten by animals? What if I meet with danger?
Well, my motive was to die. But if I get killed while getting the poison, I would still succeed in my goal, just that it would be more painful.
And now, I was on the path to death. Voluntarily.
