Chapter Two: The new and the old.
Rebecca found her way to the school hall. Her school was a Christian missionary school and every morning there was a service that the students were made to attend. Rebecca walked in.
Once again she found herself in the middle of a sea of blue and black uniforms. The junior girls were wearing blue shirts and black dungarees while the boys were wearing blue shirts and black shorts. The senior boys on the other hand wore blue shirts and black trousers while the girls like Rebecca were wearing blue shirts with black skirts.
The hall like the class rooms had cream walls and white tiled floors. There were rows and rows of white chairs and at the front of the hall was the a platform where the minister was to stand.
At the right hand of the platform, the school choir and orchestra were standing with their instruments and microphones at the ready. On the left hand side of the platform, there were seats for important dignitaries like the principal, Mrs Alaye.
Rebecca got a seat at the back of the hall. She was sitting beside a new student.
The girl sitting beside her had smooth nut brown skin and long black hair that passed her neck. She had a plump stature and her deep black eyes have her a sophisticated look.
All in all, she realised that the girl didn't look bad at all
She realized that this was the perfect time to make a new friend. She decided to wait till the announcements were being made.
During the service, Rebecca spotted Gabriella, Sarah and Betty dancing in the crowd. Sarah, Susan and Betty has been Rebecca's best friends. They had left her for a group of kids who played pranks together.
Rebecca knew that they had joined this group because she had been very serious last term and had no time for jokes. She had kind of pushed them away. When they had told her they were done and were going to make new friends Rebecca had been heart broken.
She had performed excellently well in her exams while her friends had managed to pass. She was still upset about what had happened but here was her chance to make a new friend. She wasn't going to mess it up.
When it was time for the principal to make the announcements, Rebecca made her move.
"Hi, I'm Rebecca Roberts, what's your name?" She asked politely.
The girl looked at her in confusion "Did I say something wrong?"
She asked. She really hoped that the new students sitting beside her didn't already know her old friends. Finally, the girl spoke with a French accent.
"My sincerest apologies Madmoiselle, I have actually lived in Togo all my life. I can speak a bit of English but find it hard to understand it when other people speak it"
"Oh, okay, what class are You going to choose?" I asked.
When students passed their Junior state and Federal exams they moved to senior secondary school. In senior secondary School, they had to choose between three classes; the science, art and commercial based on their academic strengths. For example; someone who loved business studies as a junior student would obviously choose to go to the commercial class. It was very important to choose wisely because it went a long way to determining one's future job.
"I'm going to the art class with hopes of becoming a linguist, by the way, my name is Janet Olufemi. My dad moved back to Lagos to start a business" she replied.
Rebecca and Janet talked for a very long time. Unfortunately, after the closing prayers Rebecca and Janet went their separate ways. Rebecca was directed to her class while Janet stayed in the hall for an orientation meant for new students. Rebecca was afraid that she might not get to talk to Janet as much as she wanted to during the term. The three classes didn't really mix. At least she would be seeing her around. Rebecca walked with mixed feelings to her class.
