Chapter 14: Hikari's worst fears

Chapter 14 is here~yay back to the main story~ hehe

Kurai POV

I yawned before blinking my eyes open, I sighed in annoyance at the sunlight that slipped through the forest canopy.

I wish we had stopped around dawn or something.... Traveling during the day is the worst..

I sat up and looked around as I blinked the sleep out of my eyes, I smiled slightly when I saw Hikari sleeping soundly and peacefully.

He's usually up first so I guess he and Yuki must have stayed up really late.

I looked over to see that Yuki was curled up like a cat bundled in leaves as if she had made a makeshift bed before falling asleep. I yawned silently and stretched my arms before getting up to stretch my legs.

I heard Hikari groan slightly as he rolled over to his side, propping himself up with his elbow. I laughed slightly when my snowy haired friend slowly blinked the sleep out of his crimson eyes. He looked up at me with a sleepy look on his face.

"You're up early...."

The snowy haired teen said before releasing a huge yawn, allowing his fangs to glint in the slight sunlight.

Poor Hikari..... Our travel schedule was messed up because of everything...

"Yeah I'm well rested now"

Hikari nodded before I took a loose leaf out of his hair, I looked over towards Yuki to see that the scarlet haired girl was also stirring slightly.

"That's good, I guess when Yuki's fully awake she can resend out the talisman to lead us to the closest place where people are settled."

Hikari said sleepily as he rubbed the sleep out of his crimson eyes.

When Hikari's half asleep he's more mellow, thankfully.

"Yeah.... But..... I'm hungry...."

I blushed slightly as I heard my stomach growl as if to prove my point. The snowy haired vampire frowned Slightly before slowly getting up to brush off his clothes.

"Well I don't blame you, we haven't eaten in a while, I'm not sure about Yuki though"

"I also haven't eaten in a while! I think a meal would do us good!"

Yuki called as she suddenly popped out of her sleep, I smiled slightly at how odd the scarlet girl was.

I wonder how long she's actually been awake.

"I'll go look for some berries and you guys can look for whatever you want!"

I said as I stood up and brushed my pants off.

The scarlet haired girl and snowy haired boy nodded in agreement, I wasn't good at hunting so berry picking seemed right for me.

The three of us split up, not too far from where we slept however, just in case something happened and one of us needed help.

Hmm I've got to remember which berries Hikari told me are dangerous...

I looked around the trees for small bushes, hoping to find at least a few berries, I frowned when I had found none after a while.

I jumped when I heard a cry that was a mixture of surprise and fear, I looked around and ran towards the direction where I thought it had come from. I stopped running and sighed when I saw that it was only Hikari.

His crimson eyes were blazing with disgust as he hung from a tree branch, out of reach of a ten inch long and four inches wide millipede. The creature was trying to climb its way up the tree where my snowy haired friend was taking refuge.

Oh yeah..... Big bugs freak Hikari out....

I heard footsteps behind me and I looked over to see Yuki, she froze when she saw Hikari in the tree then burst out laughing.

"You.... You yelled because of a bug?"

The scarlet haired girl laughed, the snowy haired boy shot her a crimson glare as he hung from the tree.

"Yes!! Now get that thing away from me!!"

Hikari yelled, the scarlet haired girl snickered before spearing the oversized millipede with a stick. The snowy haired teen let out a relieved sigh before dropping down from the tree.

"Hikari why's a big bad' vampire like you afraid of bugs?"

Yuki teased, I couldn't help but laugh at the way Yuki put it. Hikari scowled and looked away, I guessed that he was embarrassed about what had just happened.

"They're weird! All those legs... Their eyes and the way they crawl! All of that is just not right!"

The snowy haired teen huffed as he crossed his arms, I patted Hikari on the head in an attempt to make him feel better.

"It's okay Hikari, everyone's afraid of something"

Though bugs are harmless for the most part.

The snowy haired teen scowled before pushing my arm away, his pale face had a slight tint of pink present on it.

"Well anyway this thing seems like it could be edible, why don't we eat it?"

Yuki suggested as she held up the dead centipede on a stick, I glanced over at Hikari, he looked like he was about to be sick.

Yuki that's just mean...

"No.... Just no"

My snowy haired friend murmured as he left us with the dead millipede. The scarlet haired girl sighed in disappointment.

"Aww, I wish I could have teased him some more"

"Yuki, that was really mean. Hikari is actually truly scared of bugs like that..."

I sighed.

"I know but I just couldn't help it, anyway lets continue searching for food. I don't think there would be any berries around here though."

No berries? But it's a forest?

I looked over at the scarlet haired girl in confusion, I didn't understand why she thought that there would be no berries nearby.

"Why wouldn't there he any berries Yuki?"

"Because I just know so"

I frowned, I didn't think that it was a reliable answer.

"Oh....."

Yuki's icy eyes glinted and she smiled before ruffling my hair. It felt nice but it just wasn't the same like when Hikari did so.

"Don't worry Kurai, you can tag along as I search for food."

I nodded, tagging along was better than being left back at camp doing nothing at all.

"Okay"

I followed Yuki as she crept through the forest, I did my best to follow her silently but kept on making small noises. We did this for a while before she stopped me and pointed towards an umi deer.

The scarlet haired girl pulled out a talisman and whispered soft words into it. The talisman then shot towards the blue furred deer and bound its legs causing it to fall on it's side.

Me and Yuki ran towards the struggling deer, the scarlet haired girl quickly silenced it with a quick slash from a dagger that I hadn't noticed before. Then the dagger was swiftly placed in a sheath that was hidden at the back of her ankle under her pants.

"Whoa..... Yuki that was awesome!"

I exclaimed as I looked over the fallen deer, the scarlet haired girl smiled then shrugged.

"Nah, that was nothing. It's really simple once you know how"

Simple? Then maybe I could learn to do that.

"So could you teach me?"

I really wanted to know how to do that, I wanted to a lt least be able to defend myself. Icy eye flickered with unease, Yuki smiled sadly.

"Sorry Kurai.... I don't think you will be able to use talismans. I'd prefer it actually if you were to not learn any fighting skills"

That doesn't make any sense.... If I knew how to fight I could protect myself and cause you and Hikari less trouble... Right? So then why...

I frowned slightly, I had really wanted to be able to learn a few neat skills so as to not burden my friends.

"Can you please tell me why? I'm curious."

The scarlet haired girl shook her head.

"Sorry Kurai, maybe sometime in the future but not now"

I nodded in disappointment, I didn't want to pester the scarlet haired exorcist in case she decided that never teaching me would be better.

At least there's a chance that I can one day learn how to defend myself.

Hikari POV

I felt some of the warmth on my side leave me. I felt slightly chilly at the loss of it, I rolled over in an attempt to find it but failed in doing so. I groaned with annoyance as I blinked my eyes open, I looked up to see Kurai standing above me.

I guess I stayed up too long explaining how me and Kurai met to Yuki...

"You're up early...."

I said before releasing a huge yawn, allowing my fangs to glint in the slight sunlight.

If only the whole day had been slept away....

"Yeah I'm well rested now"

I nodded then the coal haired boy leaned down to pluck a loose leaf out of my hair. I followed Kurai's sea green gaze to see that Yuki was stirring slightly.

"That's good, I guess when Yuki's fully awake she can resend out the talisman to lead us to the closest place where people are settled."

I said sleepily as I rubbed the remainder of my drowsiness out of my eyes.

I want to reach a town or something before the sun sets... It's more easy if its daytime even though I hate it.

"Yeah.... But..... I'm hungry...."

Kurai blushed slightly at the sound of his stomach growling. I frowned at the thought that neither of us had eaten in quite a while. I got up and brushed the dirt out of my clothes.

Kurai looks so innocent and cute when he blushes.... I should really stop with theses thoughts for now... It could really cause problems for him if I accidentally let it out...

"Well I don't blame you, we haven't eaten in a while, I'm not sure about Yuki though"

"I also haven't eaten in a while! I think a meal would do us good!"

Yuki called as she suddenly popped out of her sleep, it didn't surprise me that the scarlet haired girl had been watching us like a creep.

Once a creepy person, always a creepy person.

"I'll go look for some berries and you guys can look for whatever you want!"

Kurai said as he stood up and brushed his pants off.

The scarlet haired girl and I nodded in agreement, Kurai was no hunter and I knew that I had a decent chance in catching something.

The three of us split up, not too far from where we slept however, just in case something happened and one of us needed help.

Hmm what should I search for? I don't want it to be too big but it can't be too small..

I looked around the trees for any sign of wildlife, I looked up in a tree and spotted a speckled tree fox nest.

Perfect! The eggs will do well for a meal!

I climbed up the tree until I reached the nest, I smirked when I saw that there were four head sized speckled fox eggs.

I'll take three and let the last one hatch.

I reached my hand into the nest then quickly pulled it back just in time to stop it from being bitten off by a mother speckled fox.

It's yellow eyes glared at me as it stood over it's eggs in a defensive position. I sighed in annoyance and left the speckled fox nest, it wasn't worth risking my hand for.

I hopped out of the tree only to land beside the most horrendous bug I have ever seen, I felt a scream escape my mouth as I scurried back up the tree and clung to the branch.

Why the hell is that thing there?!?

I shivered in disgust as I saw its creepy legs try to crawl its way up the tree.

"You.... You yelled because of a bug?"

I heard Yuki laugh, I shot her a glare because that ugly bug was no joke.

How can those two be so calm?!?!

"Yes!! Now get that thing away from me!!"

I yelled, the scarlet haired girl snickered before spearing the oversized millipede with a stick. I sighed with relief that the menace was finally gone as I hopped out of the tree.

"Hikari why's a big bad vampire like you afraid of bugs?"

Bugs are so disgusting.... Crawling everywhere...

Yuki teased, I heard Kurai laugh as well. I scowled at how silly I must look and looked away slightly embarrassed.

"They're weird! All those legs... Their eyes and the way they crawl! All of that is just not right!"

I huffed as I crossed his arms, the coal haired boy came over and patted my head as if I was a small child.

"It's okay Hikari, everyone's afraid of something"

I'm not afraid of bugs.... They are just gross...

I scowled before pushing Kurai away, I didn't want him to comfort me because I didn't need comforting.

"Well anyway this thing seems like it could be edible, why don't we eat it?"

Yuki suggested as she held up the dead centipede on a stick, I felt sick at the thought of that thing crawling down my throat.

How can she even think that?...

"No.... Just no"

I murmured as he left them to do whatever they wanted with the dead bug.

It didn't help that Kurai was just standing there like eating bugs was normal.

Has Kurai eaten bugs before?.... I know I've never told him not to but I just expected him not to...

I shivered at the thought of Kurai randomly picking up a dead bug and just popping it in his mouth.

He doesn't do much on his own but when he does act on his own.... Things don't always turn out well.. I think I should tell him not to eat bugs but I'm too afraid to ask if he has already eaten them before.

Me: ah so that's the end of the chapter.

Kurai: I've eaten bugs

Hikari: what?!?!?

Yuki: *laughs*

Kurai: *turns to yuki* you told me he'd be happy if I lied

Hikari: ........ Yuki.....

Yuki: hehe..... Well I couldn't resist

Me: well anyway hope ya enjoyed the chapter~
