A few months later
San waits outside of Madam Seo's mansion, trying to not look like he's currently nervous as he fixes his suit and bowtie. His hands are nervously trying to find something to do, until he has to pace back and forth in front of his car. When the door opens he almost feels like he'll jump out of his skin as he sees Madam Seo descending the stairs, this time her pink statement her slippers.
Behind Madam Seo, Danbi is sheepishly waving to San as she follows her. He returns the wave but stands up straight as he sees Madam Seo looking at him up and down.
"Good evening, Madam," San says rigidly.
She nods. "Good evening. Finished your security gig at the concert for today?"
"Yes Madam, and that's why I'm here to take your daughter out," he looks at Danbi, "on a date."
Madam Seo chuckles seeing San so uptight before moving to the side, slightly nudging Danbi forward with her shoulder as she winks. "Have fun. Are you coming back home tonight," she asks mischievously, "or are you staying over at San's?"
"I'm not sure, but I'll inform you if I decide to stay at San's. Bye, love you mom," Danbi gives a kiss to Madam Seo's cheek.
The older woman waves to the two of them as San drives out of the compound, and as soon as he notices that Madam Seo can't see them anymore, he releases his breath.
Danbi laughs when she sees how San looks like he's just seen a ghost before snapping open her mirror so that she can apply lipstick. She glides the lipstick over her lips as she utters, "Why are you always so uptight around mom? It's not like she's going to attack you for going out on a date with me."
"Even if I'm dating her daughter," he replies, "she's still my boss. Madam Seo has always been slightly scary to me. Imagine her wrath if I accidentally did something wrong to you. She loves you with all her heart, and I don't want to look at her if she gets angry."
"Come on, you know that she's not scary. It's just the way she presents herself."
"Now that I think about it," he replies, "you're the same. You scare me a lot."
"Uh-uh," she agrees as she takes off her seatbelt as they arrive at the restaurant. "So you know not to mess with me because I can and I will fight for myself."
"I know, and that's why I love you." He kisses her cheek before stepping out of the car, scurrying over to the other side as he opens the door for her.
She hooks her arm with his, and they walk into the restaurant to be ushered onto the topmost floor, where there is a specially reserved place for them. Their faces break into larger smiles as they spot the rest already there; from her ex-bodyguards, her housemates and their significant others, Wooyoung, Yeosang and Anna.
Danbi looks at Mingi who's up in the arms of Jihyun, and she can't deny that they're a cool-looking couple. Apparently after much debate, both of them finally got back together, with Mingi deciding to return to the racing scene. They're still having illegal races, but apparently they're looking to get involved with legal ones; so that they can put their talents to good use.
Jihyun reaches out a hand as Danbi approaches them, and the latter fist-bumps it.
Danbi then slaps a hand to Mingi's head before smirking, "Looks like the lamp post finally has a girlfriend."
Mingi rolls his eyes before shrugging, "You're talking as if we don't see each other for months. Hongjoong and I literally saw your face this morning. Can you imagine how sick I am looking at your face everyday?"
She snorts, "Watch you look for me saying you miss me if I sleep over at San's today. You can never live a day without me."
"True," Jihyun agrees. "My boyfriend looks all tough but he probably needs you to crush that cockroach in his room."
"Trust me, he'll probably end up dead first before he even manages to scream if I'm not there."
"Hey, looks like both of you are having fun mocking me."
"Because you give the most interesting reactions," Danbi says in a singsong voice before flicking her finger to Mingi's head. "Have fun with your girlfriend you lamp post."
"Shut up blockhead or I'll give you the wrath of the fermented pants."
Danbi does a disgusted look before she gasps, "You still keep it?"
"He does," Hongjoong approaches them, and Jinju beside him greets the rest. "Oh gosh, if Madam Seo ever finds out that he brought those pants into her house, he's going to get it. The smell is horrible."
After Bae Wonshik passed away in the accident, a snap election was done to pick a new prime minister. With too many bad memories associated with the mansions in Aurora Heights coupled with the fact that some of their possessions were seized due to illegal activities by him, Danbi had decided to sell the mansions off, deciding to live back at the rooftop house, just like how she and her two housemates used to be. She had no choice but to lay off the workers, but she tried hard to provide each and every one of them with help, using up all the resources that she had managed to inherit to provide for their welfare. With every one of her ties to the Bae household gone, she decided to revert to her old name; one that she feels like it's truly hers.
As they decided to move back to the rooftop house, Madam Seo came and visited them, offering another option to them. She wanted to repay all the stuff she couldn't do with her daughter, so she had invited the three housemates to live together with her. Nothing much changed even as they moved into the house; Hongjoong and Mingi are still working their part-time jobs. Although Madam Seo had offered to give them so help if they wanted to start their own business, they politely refused by saying that they would work on their own capital.
As for Danbi, she's thinking of continuing her studies, but she still doesn't know what she'd be interested in. So while she's still trying to make up her mind, Madam Seo offered a position for her at the security company. It's one that suited her the most; she was recruited as a trainer, the youngest in the company. There were some rumours accompanying her when they saw that it was the most-talked daughter of the previous prime minister, but Madam Seo was quick to shut them off with a glare.
For now, the focus on Kim Danbi as related to the Bae household has slowly reduced, and she could go out in public without having as much worry as she did back then when she was the daughter of the prime minister.
Danbi spots Wooyoung sitting on the far corner, chatting with Yeosang and Anna before she gestures towards her housemates that she's going to talk to them. Even before she approaches them Anna is already waving to her, and both men look at her direction as she asks whether she's allowed to join in.
"How are you... coping?" Danbi asks to Wooyoung first, knowing that the topic of her twin is still a sensitive one.
Soyeon has been sentenced to prison for life, and Wooyoung is still finding it hard to cope with the fact that his girlfriend whom he thought he knew turned out to be someone different. So far, Wooyoung is the only one who visits Soyeon from time to time; Yeosang and Danbi found it hard to face her, so they're postponing their visits until they feel like they'd be ready.
Even with the visits, Wooyoung only shakes his head, saying that he doesn't know Soyeon anymore. She's changed into someone truly different, her mind constantly being messed up by her view of the world now. They said that she's also been crying, calling to her child who never existed, and they're maybe planning to transfer her into another facility that could make her fit in better.
He sighs, "Besides worrying for Soyeon, I'm doing okay. My parents' companies have been investigated, and they're moving in and out of court to defend their activities. I was almost caught up in the mess but luckily my company survived. So now I'm still trying to build up the reputation that I've almost lost. I was thinking of moving out of the house though. Condition in the house still bad, but..." he tilts his head, "I'm worried for Woosung. I don't want to live him alone, so I'm just holding on for now." He puts up a hand, "No worries, I'm coping. If anything, my view of the world might be slightly different now, but I'm doing fine."
When they turn to Yeosang and Anna, both of them only shrug as they say that they are doing okay. Just like Wooyoung, Anna's parents had been under fire for whatever they did. With the struggles in their household, Anna and Yeosang decided to move out together, hoping to start a new life with Anna and her own fashion line. Despite losing his job after the Bae household went down, Wooyoung was quick to hire him as a staff in his company, saying that some of them decided to quit when it seemed that the company looked like it's going down. Yeosang's parents went back to their hometown, back to his grandparents' house.
As for Danbi's ex-bodyguards... they're still under Madam Seo, working all the same under the security company. Jongho and Yunho are not looking to venture out from their jobs, as they are pretty comfortable with how they are. San might be alluding at the fact that he's planning to continue his studies together with Danbi, while Seonghwa is planning to look for a more stable job, preferably one that is not so dangerous. He had even told them that he was planning to adopt Somin, but he wants to find another proper job first before he decides to take her in so that she'll be comfortable.
Everyone seem to be putting their troubles behind them, even though some took longer to move on, while some are still stuck in the past. Whatever it is, they decide they know that from the first time they met until everything happened now, had taught them a lot of lessons.
All of them except San and Danbi down their drinks like there's no tomorrow; getting drunk even before the night has started to peak. It all comes to the point that San and Danbi had to become their caretakers, apologizing profusely to the staff of the restaurant as they help to call for designated drivers for each one of them, giving them directions to their houses, before only the two of them are left at the restaurant.
The two of them pay for all before San chuckles, saying that he just spent more than he ever did for a month. With them the only ones sober as they did not touch any alcoholic drinks at all, they get into the car and San brings her to another destination, saying that their date for today is not over yet. It's almost 9 at night, but the sky is still shining with stars that make them feel like they're in another world. The car goes up a hill before he parks it at a clearing, putting them at a position where they can see the sky clearly.
"This is your idea of a date?" she asks playfully.
"Of course. Minimalist at best. It's romantic isn't it?" He climbs up the hood of the car before pulling her up, and she immediately leans her head against his shoulder.
They wallow in silence for a few minutes, with Danbi closing her eyes as the images of the incident replay in her head, how she was reaching out her hands to hold onto nothing as her father's face is the last thing she sees before being thrown off the building. She does feel as if something is weighing down on her heart whenever she's remembered of it. Sometimes she would shed tears as she's reminded of how Wonshik had pushed both of them off the edge just so they could save themselves.
But she has learnt how to control her feelings more as she thinks back to that day, how her father's words hold so much meaning to her, no matter if they are the last words of someone desperate. It means a lot to her that she can hear her father's voice playing around in her head whenever she sits alone; no sounds of a crumbling building, no explosions, only Bae Wonshik's voice. She uses that line to push herself forward, reminding herself that for once, she had a father figure who was proud of her and loved her.
Even though they were his last words to her, she could feel how they are his most sincere words.
San looks to the side as he feels his shirt soaked, and sees that tears are rolling down Danbi's closed eyes. When he's about to move, she utters, "I'm fine. I just need time to dry my tears up."
"Okay," San looks to the side before patting her head with his chin. "I'll wait."
She cries into his shoulder, but after a good few minutes she opens her eyes then wipes them off, as if nothing has happened. "I'm all good. I'm planning to visit dad's grave tomorrow."
He nods. "Sure, I'm on leave tomorrow. I'll bring you there."
She lifts up her head from his shoulder, hugging her knees to her chest as she looks at the sky. Unlike that day, today the sky looks clear of any signs of rain. "Mom..." she trails off before telling San, "Mom as in Madam Seo. She told me everything about my birth, about how Soyeon and I came to be. Dad died without even knowing that we're his biological daughters, but during the last moments when he saved us, I felt that he was trying his best to become a dad. He mentioned about how they tried all kinds of methods to conceive, which meant that at some point he did try to make his wife happy. We never knew how he had no idea that we're not his biological daughters, but all we could think was that our biological mother lied to him, saying that she had probably adopted Soyeon while she was separated from him. He lived with the child he never knew was his." She smiles, a sad one plastered on her face, "It's cruel isn't it? Destiny. And now I've lost two of my family members at once."
"But it's not, and never will be your fault," he reminds her. "Like Seonghwa said, destiny is what always people use as an excuse to explain something they can't. Would you say things would happen differently if you didn't show up that night? You can't determine that things wouldn't happen this way; it probably would but maybe the way it would happen is different. Maybe you wouldn't even come into the picture, but Soyeon would have had reacted differently that would lead to this too." He changes the way he sits so that he faces her from the side. "When you tried hard to save your father, it showed how much you cared for him. You said you wanted to change from the person you were, and you did."
She sticks out her lower lip as she glances at him. "Are you trying to make me cry again?"
"No," he laughs. "I'm proud of you, that's all."
"Huh," she says shortly.
"What about the Reflectors? Are you still..." he trails off.
"Mom decided to put a stop on the Reflectors first. Since everything became a mess from inside, we needed time to restructure everything. For now, I don't know when we'll continue with it."
"I see." There's a slight smile on his face and she frowns as she asks why he's smiling. "It's just that whenever we talk about the Reflectors, I'm reminded of my parents. The way they're like fans to the organization. If only they knew that their favourite daughter is a part of them."
Danbi blushes at the mention of her being their favourite daughter before attempting to shove her elbow into San's stomach. "Talking about your parents... I kind of miss going to your house and talking with them."
San groans. "I swear you sound exactly like mom. Both of you just met each other a few days ago and she said she already missed you. Didn't you meet them when I was out for a job and didn't return home for a few days?"
She grimaces. "I did, but what can I do? They're such fun and nice people to be with. Plus your mom has taught me how to knit; I can knit a small hat now. I can probably give it to Panther to wear."
He chuckles. "Unless she chews on it."
"Awh, but at least she'll appreciate my effort right?" When something else comes to her mind as she's reminded of how much Madam Choi adores babies, her shoulders drop. "Your mother must really want grandchildren though. She's always knitting small mittens and caps. Plus she did say that she likes babies a lot."
"Hmm," he agrees, but he doesn't get her point. "Why?"
"I mean," she purses her lips, "if my biological mother and Soyeon can't hold through their pregnancies..." she puts a hand over her stomach, "it's most likely that I can't too."
"Well," he starts, "we can always try and see."
She pulls back her body, looking at San suspiciously. "Don't tell me that you're already having wild thoughts."
"What do you mean?" he asks innocently as he shakes his head. "I'm just answering your question."
She laughs before shrugging. "Well, if our relationship goes awry because of this, I swear I'm going to cry. Having kids is not everything."
"And I'm sure mom thinks the same too. Did you know? That they only got me ten years after their marriage, despite getting married early. That means if there's anyone who understands about how hard it is to have your own child, it's my mom. She won't pressure you like that."
"Ah..." she trails off. "But our kids would be so cute though. Both of their parents are cute."
This time San coughs, almost looking like he's about to choke. "You're always so confident."
She nods while closing her eyes. "Confidence is key. Don't you agree?" She sticks out her tongue. "You know when you stopped me on the way to the interview; I thought you were hot but a jerk. Glad to know that you're not a prick like I first thought you were."
"Huh, so you did have your first thoughts about my looks instead of my personality." He fake gasps, "Did you lie to mom? Saying that you got attracted to my personality first rather than my looks?"
She lightly slaps a hand to his cheek before saying, "Didn't you hear what I said? I thought that you were hot but a jerk, so I didn't feel any attraction. But that day, when you checked up on me and hugged me, that was the first time I ever felt anything. So I didn't lie," she shrugs, "it was your hug."
He doesn't say anything as he runs a hand through his hair and snuggles up to her.
They kiss under the stars, and he hugs her so tight after that she laughs, asking him to let go because he's crushing her. He presses his forehead against hers, taking in every detail of her eyes before he kisses her again. She smiles against the kiss, her fingers latching onto his shirt.
San doesn't say anything, but the emotions conveyed through his eyes are enough to tell her what he's currently feeling.
It may not rain tonight, but she's glad to know that the rain doesn't mean that she'll be left alone again.
The rain brings a lot of blessings.
And I'm glad to know that you're one of them.
The end.
