They listen on to the conversation between Danbi and Soyeon as Madam Seo paces back and forth. They can only listen on to their conversation, knowing that the short amount of time they had to prepare themselves before sending off Danbi to meet her twin only allowed them to fit a microphone under the lapel of her jacket, while enforcement have been mobilized to the scene. They don't know how far Soyeon has planned this out, so they can't act rashly; intruding into the scene might even prove careless if Soyeon decides to pull out another hidden card.
Right now, all they can do is listen to their conversation as they try to figure out to what extent Soyeon would act.
"Send in a sniper," Jongho suggests. "Take her out from far."
"We can't," Madam Seo says. "There's no suitable vantage point. No high buildings around the area except the market itself. We can't aim for anyone inside."
"Then are you saying all we can do is watch, and hope that Danbi somehow manages to save herself?" San claims, exasperated.
"A person who is hurt inside," Seonghwa says, as another struggle from Danbi comes through the speakers, "is volatile. We don't know what Soyeon is going to do to Danbi if we send in people. She's not thinking straight; a person like that would do anything to get her points across. We can't act mindlessly."
"I'll go..." Wooyoung offers, looking out of it. "No matter what it is, she's my girlfriend."
"No," Madam Seo says firmly. "Seeing you will trigger her even more. You heard her; she's doing all this after she knew she can't carry on with her pregnancy."
"Then what do you suggest-"
"No!" Danbi's voice comes again and they instinctively turn towards the speakers. They hear the horrible dragging of a body, the microphone emitting crunching noises before it turns to static.
"We can't stay like this; the microphone is destroyed. It sounded like Danbi was dragged across the floor."
San balls his fists before attempting to turn around to exit the van before another instruction from the enforcement surrounding the area fills in the speakers.
"The prime minister is tied to a chair," they report, "and the chair is hanging from a rope. It looks like the rope is stuck so it doesn't go all the way down, but once the rope snaps the prime minister will descend."
There are shouts of arguments over the speakers, one person trying to justify their act over the other, saying which one is better. One is asking them to simply burst into the scene, knowing that they can easily take over that one person, while another is asking them to wait, as the estimate of the people helping Soyeon is still unclear. They can't even determine whether there are other people, those who are helping Soyeon as of this moment, to be scattered around the place, looking to put up a fight in order to protect Soyeon.
"A person is in danger and they're fighting," San says through gritted teeth. "We need to- we need to do something-"
"We don't have the authority," Madam Seo says in a defeated tone. "This is a countrywide case involving the prime minister; all we can do is follow their instructions and wait. But right now... they're doing nothing."
"They-" San starts to argue, but is stopped when there's an update from the enforcement.
"The prime minister is pulled up!" they shout, "He's being pulled up! The chair has landed on the floor again; it's safe for now."
Another few excruciating minutes pass by, and those in the van are already restless; it's hard when they are offered no visuals, and no clearance to be on the field like the rest of the enforcement. They can't do anything besides wait for the updates coming from those surrounding the building.
"Bae Danbi is out!"
Their ears perk up at the new information, and those in the van waste no time alighting the vehicle, breaking the rule that they're not supposed to get involved. They don't care; the fact that Danbi had escaped from the building meant that she had managed to fight off Soyeon.
As soon as they land on the asphalt road, San is the first to break into a run as he sees from far Danbi staggering, her clothes torn, her skin dirtied and her hair a mess. She's crying as she drags her feet on the road, looking like she would collapse any moment. The enforcement immediately secure her, and she shouts out in fear.
"We have to go- Soyeon said-" she struggles hard to keep her breath, "we can't stay- she had planned to blow- up the whole building. I only- managed to knock her- unconscious- she's going to wake up- in a while. If we stay-" she grips one of the enforcement's hand as her own shakes, "-everyone will get hurt. We have to go-"
"Sir, the prime minister," one of the staff informs his leader, but he shakes his head. "Take Bae Danbi somewhere safe first, and we'll decide what to do next. Secure her first, treat her first!"
"Yes sir!"
San wrestles his way through the enforcement, but he gets pushed back, saying that now is not the time to be attending to her. He fights back anyway, saying that he needs to talk to her and see whether she's fine. As he manages to lunge towards Danbi who's being transported onto the stretcher, he grabs her hands and she looks at him with tears in her eyes.
"Are you okay?" he asks, looking at her torn clothes as he feels his heart ache. "What did she do to you?"
"Sir, now is not the time." One of the medical officers try to pry away San from Danbi. "She is in need of medical attention."
"Just a moment please," he says, sounding desperate. He looks at the dark sky, thunder and lightning working in concert as the first signs of the rain appears. The staff is already planning to take her away as the raindrops hit them, but he is adamantly stopping them from taking her away.
Confused, the rest of them look as San seems like he's not planning to let go of Danbi. He's gripping his hand hard on the handle of the stretcher, preventing them from taking her away from him.
"Choi San, what do you think you're doing, you're wasting time!" Seonghwa shouts as he tries to pry away San from the stretcher. "You can talk to her all you want after all of this mess."
"The rain," San says to Danbi as he grips her hands, "It's beautiful isn't it? It rained during the time we met at Kalmia District, and you told me that you love the rain because of that. It's raining now."
Frowning, they listen to San speaking like a madman, as if he can't wait for another time to relive their romantic memories.
Through her tears, Danbi nods. "It's beautiful."
Hongjoong and Mingi's faces start to change as realization dawns on them.
At this answer, San immediately switches off his smile, letting go of her hands roughly. "You could've gotten an oscar for your acting, Bae Soyeon. Danbi hates the rain, and it wasn't raining when we met at Kalmia District. The weather was fucking hot I was sweating like crazy."
Madam Seo immediately shouts, "Arrest her, now! She's Bae Soyeon acting as Danbi!"
As the enforcement turn their focus to Soyeon on the stretcher, San knows that he has no time to lose. Ignoring the orders for him to stay put, he runs into the building, climbing up the stairs as fast as he could. He gets to the topmost floor where he sees the actual Danbi, looking in a worse shape than Soyeon.
Danbi is sprawled on the floor, her shaking hand desperately grabbing the rope the chair is tied to. Her body is weak as she drags herself bit by bit across the floor, her nails scraping against the cement as she tries to bring the chair further away from the edge. She only looks up through her blurry vision as she sees San coming to her, too tired to even stand up.
"Hey, it's okay, it's okay," San starts busying himself with trying to pull the rope together with her, shouting as Bae Wonshik's weight together with the metal chair are making it hard for them to even move.
With one last grunt and pull, San helps Danbi to grab the rope, the metal chair clanging on the floor as it finally finds purchase on the floor. He feels the energy getting drained out of his body, but he approaches Danbi before cradling her.
"Hey," he breathes. "It's all over now. You're going to be okay."
"No..." she croaks. "She said- she's really going to- blow up- this place. We have to go- but my father-"
"Danbi..." the prime minister has woken up, looking around the area as his thoughts slowly come to him. "What did you do..."
"Dad," she utters. Then she turns to look at San, "We have to go- please. I don't- I don't know where she planted the explosives- but- she seemed determined-"
As if on cue the other side of the building explodes, crumbling the stones and barricading the only conventional exit they have. The foundation starts to rumble and it will only be a few minutes before the part they're on collapses too.
With the strength she has left she limps as she takes a rock, before staggering towards the stacked pieces of glass. Then she brings it down hard on them, splintering the glass. With shaking hands she picks up one splintered piece before running to her dad, trying to cut through the ropes. From the back and through the corner of her eyes, she hears and sees San approaching her, helping her to saw through the ropes with his own splintered glass. After much struggle they finally manage to untie the prime minister's legs, but it seems like a hard feat for them to saw through the ropes around his body before time is up.
"Just leave me," the prime minister says as tears come to his eyes. "Save yourselves. Both of you are still young, you have a whole life ahead of you. I'm just an old man who's waiting to die."
"No, no, no. I'm not just going to leave you like that," Danbi says. "I'm not abandoning anyone. Especially not my family."
From down below, they hear shouts as the enforcement have provided a trampoline for them, allowing them to jump off the building and land safely.
"We just need to get you out of these ropes," San utters. "All three of us will be safe."
"The building is collapsing and everything is on fire," Wonshik shouts. "I said leave me alone! It's just a matter of time before everything explodes!"
"It's a bit- stubborn- but we can-" Danbi ignores him as she cuts through the rope bit by bit.
Another sound of the floors below them collapsing, but they're not giving up. They can already feel the heat, the frolicking flames coming over to them. This time, another round of shouts come from down below, asking them to throw themselves off the building right this instant because another episode of explosion might occur, yet the shower of rain does little to help in extinguishing the fire.
"I'm sorry I'm not the father you wanted," he utters through his tears. But even then his tears seem to evaporate with the heat. "I'm sorry you can't get the family that I should've given you."
When his hands are free, Wonshik does what the two of them didn't expect him to, causing them to unable to react. He pushes them off the edge, shouting at them to save themselves.
She hears the final sentence Wonshik said to her as her body falls backwards, with San beside her as they descend, racing closer to the ground. As she reaches out her hands, she cries as she sees Wonshik looking down at them, his body still tied to the chair as they haven't been able to cut through the last rope. She cries harder as she feels San reaching out to her mid-air, the journey for them to find safety on the ground so long she feels like if she were to close her eyes, drift off to sleep and open them again, she'd still be floating.
Wonshik looks down below, a sad smile on his face as his ears capture the sound of another explosion, his body engulfed in flames as his tears get dried up again, along with his body. The last thing he sees is his wife beckoning for him to come over, wearing the smile that he knows that he has fallen for.
On the ground, Danbi and San finally reach the trampoline, with them quickly retrieved before being brought over for medical attention. She curls on the stretcher, crying her heart out as the rain falls on her again, but soon she gives in to her fatigue. She drifts off to sleep, but the one sentence her father had said to her resonates in her until she feels like it will seep into her dreams.
I'm proud to have you as my daughter, and even though I may not show it, I love you.
---
Danbi looks at the ceiling, and she feels someone holding her hand. She moves her gaze to her arms that are stuck with all kinds of tubes, and sees that San has his head down on the bed.
He's holding on to her hand, breathing slowly and steadily but as he feels her stir he blinks a few times. His body immediately straightens as he sees that she has woken up.
"Are you feeling alright?" he immediately asks, already softly gripping her face as if to capture even the slightest expression she shows.
With a weak smile, she nods before holding his hand that's cupping her face but her eyes are telling otherwise as a tear drops. "Please tell me that everything was a bad dream. That dad is still alive somewhere, and he's doing his job as the prime minister."
"I'm sorry," is all he manages to say. He wipes her tears with his hands, and she grips onto his hand tighter, her breath hitched. He hugs her, but he knows that there's nothing more that he can do.
The person in his embrace has been scarred, made someone different as the place that has become her nightmare turns into another raging monster that will forever remain imprinted in her mind. He lets her bury her face at the crook of his neck. When it seems that she has stopped crying, he lets go, but not before he makes sure that the tears are not running down her face anymore.
"Thank you," she utters. "Thank you for realizing that it wasn't me who went down. I was scared that everybody would give in to her and it would all be too late. I know that I've always pretended that I'm strong, but as I was sprawled on top of the building, I was scared. I didn't want to die, but that was all I was thinking of."
"I didn't want to repeat my mistake twice," he confesses. "I couldn't recognize you the first time, but I'm not about to let myself be fooled again."
"How did you know it wasn't me?"
With this San slightly looks embarrassed, but he knows that the question would eventually come out. "Well, there are some... telltale signs."
"Like...?"
"The fact that she said she liked rain when I told that she liked it because it was raining when we met at Kalmia District."
It takes her a few minutes to process as her brain still feels slow, before she nods. "Ah, right... It was too sunny that day you were sweating weren't you? You even unbuttoned the top part of your shirt."
"You were looking at my chest before we even started dating. How obscene."
"I wasn't. It's just so prominent." Then she slightly rolls her head to the side before she asks, "What made you ask that question in the first place? There must be a reason why you decided it wasn't me."
San knows that he's caught, before he mumbles, "The tattoo."
"The tattoo? Oh, the one on my stomach." Then she narrows her eyes, slowly inching away from him. "How did you know about it? I've never told you about it or showed you... my body. You didn't even want to see my abs."
He clears his throat. "It was an accident when we slept together. I accidentally woke up in the middle of the night and your shirt was slightly lifted up." He pouts, "I didn't want to mention it because you'd label me a pervert, so that's why." He runs his eyes somewhere else. "When Soyeon was lying down on the stretcher, the part of her shirt was torn and I could see that there weren't any tattoos like yours. That's when I knew something was wrong."
"Hmm," she hums, "did you enjoy the show though? How was my abs; they're pretty aren't they?"
"You-" San starts, but he chuckles. "Is this how you cope?"
Danbi shrugs before leaning against the headboard of the hospital bed, trying to put on a smile. "When tragedy befalls you too much, on and on, you start to find ways to cope. Apparently according to my housemates, this is mine. I'd cry my heart out and after I'd just pretend as if nothing happened." She looks down at her bandaged hands, "Although this one might take slightly longer to cope with. Dad..."
San puts on a sad smile before holding her hands again, caressing them. "You were unconscious for a few days, and the funeral had to be carried out as quickly as it could."
"Did they find... his body?"
He nods slowly.
She takes a deep breath, trying to erase the image of her father smiling at her after saying those words, urging them to save themselves instead of bringing him together. She closes her eyes, still can't help but think that everything that resulted in this was due to her fault that night.
"In the end, I was the cause for everything to happen."
"The last thing your father would want is for you to blame yourself," San says. "Things are bound to be found out, and the fact that you were found out earlier won't change the fact that there are two of you. The problem was deeply rooted from even before you were born; it was never you or your twin's fault. It was only a matter of how both of you reacted to it."
"Soyeon, where is she?"
"She's arrested. Her punishments are still adding up, and it doesn't look like she'll be given a leeway. Her crimes were too severe, and despite her unveiling all the bad deeds they had done, it seemed that the public reacted strongly to her crimes that they had quickly forgotten about them. She's not in the public's good book right now."
She sighs.
"But you..." he says, "After everything was revealed, the public kind of..."
She raises her eyebrows.
"Felt sorry for you. A lot of them are viewing you as the twin who got stuck in a difficult position, so they're not blaming you for the image you've put on. Though... the Jung and Yoo households did get a little bit more punch. They're struggling with their positions and some of the investors in their companies had pulled back, so financially they're not doing well. They're not in the best positions right now."
She nods slowly, trying to absorb everything that has happened in a short span of time. She leans back on the bed, and he pats down her hair.
"You need to rest more. I'll go and tell them to serve you food later on."
"Where are the others?" she asks, thinking back to her bodyguards, Yeosang, Wooyoung, Anna and Madam Seo. "Are they okay?"
"They're doing alright," he utters as he caresses her hair. "They've been waiting for you to wake up, but I'll tell them not to disturb you yet."
"Yet," she chuckles slowly. "Ah, I miss them."
"You want me to call them over?"
"Not yet." She pulls him so that he'll stand up and he looks at her confused. Even while having her arms bandaged and needles stuck in them, she manages to make him sit on the bed.
"What do you want me to do?" he asks, amused.
She tilts her head to the side, refusing to look at him straight. "Cuddle," she mumbles.
"Hmm," he hums, "and I thought I was the one with the incessant need for hugs."
"Shut up and cuddle with me right now. I need it the most."
San pretends to sigh heavily but he smiles as he climbs up beside her, trying to fit the two of them on the bed. He has been worrying for a few days that she'll wake up a different person, one that he won't recognize after the incident. He knows that she's struggling with trying to accept the fact that she lost her family, but she's putting on a strong front to cope with it. He's careful on where he's putting his arms on, knowing that she's still hurt.
"I'm trying," she mumbles as she feels San wrapping his arms around her waist. "I'm trying to pretend that everything is fine, because that's how I always cope."
"It's hard," he replies as his hand makes small circles on her stomach. "But I know you're a strong person; you'll get through it. All of us are here for you, and you know that I'll be here for you too."
She tries to turn her body around, careful in making sure that the wires connected to her body are still intact. She manages to face San, who is now caressing her back instead. She closes her eyes as she feels like she's about to drift off to sleep again.
"The rain..." she says, "Even during that incident the rain was there."
San is about to open his mouth to soothe her, but closes it back as she continues.
"The rain always accompanied my worst moments, but you made me change my mind." She puts her hand on his chest, citing, "It was also the first time I got to hear my dad saying that he's proud of me and that he loves me."
"Your name has a beautiful meaning," he pinches her cheek.
"Hmm," she mumbles as she sinks into his embrace, her eyelids heavy. "I thought I'd hate my name until I die. But I guess I'd change my mind a little bit."
