Hongjoong fixes his tie as he stands in front of the mirror calmly, seeing through the reflection that Mingi is running around the room while trying to decide what he can wear for today's special event. The former can't help but scold the latter when Danbi had continuously reminded them to attend the ceremony together with her.
It's the countrywide ceremony that will oversee her father officially becoming the prime minister that will not receive anymore rejections. In short, he will stay as a prime minister until the next election, unless he gets involved with any big criminal cases. Even then it would need a whole lot of evidence and it's a long process so majority of the prime ministers would maintain their positions.
"I told you to prepare your clothes since yesterday but you're only looking for something to wear when we're almost running late?" Hongjoong nags him.
"I was tired from working yesterday and I forgot." Mingi tries to threaten him next, "You better help me choose my clothes or I'll end up wearing my fermented pants."
Hongjoong gives off a disgusted look as he shakes his head. "Anything but the fermented pants, please."
He joins Mingi in looking for a decent suit, helping him to choose between the suits that Danbi had bought for him. They end up with a dark blue suit that shows off his thin waist, and for once, Hongjoong nods in satisfaction looking at his choice of clothes. As they go out, their jaws drop seeing Danbi beckoning them over from the inside of a limousine, rented for her by her father. They gape at the exterior before running their hands over the smooth surface, taking too much time until she has to pull them inside claiming that they're going to be late for the evening ceremony.
As Seonghwa, their driver for today, sees that all of his passengers have gotten on, he tilts his head before dramatically putting on his sunglasses. Then he brings the limousine out of the compound, with him trying to subtly glance at Danbi. The latter nods while looking over to Mingi and Hongjoong, both still not over with their bickering.
Danbi looks outside the window, resting her chin on her palm as she grips the handle of her clutch. There's probably going to be a surprise today, isn't it?
With her occasionally making conversation with her housemates regarding random topics to take her mind off the situation, the journey to the event hall located in Angrec District feels shorter than it is. She smiles slightly as she's reminded of the shock she had gotten when she found out who San is, automatically turning around her body to look at the car with the rest of her bodyguards following them. It's enough to calm her down as she sees his silhouette, before she turns to face the front again.
With the press already waiting for the guests at the entrance, it reminds her of how big this event is, eyes from all over the country watching them. She steps out as Hongjoong and Mingi following suit, the flashes and clicking of cameras greeting them on the red carpet. She hears the murmurs among the crowd, those who have yet to know who Mingi and Hongjoong are. She ignores them, drowns them out as she nods to her housemates in reassurance, and her bodyguards usher them inside while protecting her from the press.
She is guided to her seat, smiling as she sees San's parents waving to her while San is subtly telling them to stop it, slightly embarrassed. As she returns the wave, she sits down beside some people she's not familiar with, their names and identities a blur before Mingi and Hongjoong join her. She spots Wooyoung's family, slightly smirking as she sees Madam Jung sharply glaring at her before huffing and turning away. Several minutes after guests are no longer allowed inside, the event begins.
They are plunged into darkness as the profile of the prime minister is played in front of them, informing the guests of who their country's leader is, from his private life to his achievements so far. The audience claps while Danbi controls her applause, her eyes apprehensive of something that's about to happen.
She catches her bodyguards taking port beside the guests, spread out as they try to pick out anyone that seems suspicious among the thousands of attendees.
It's all based on intuition; an intuition that something will go wrong this evening.
And it does.
First it seems like a technical problem, the lights not switching on despite the media show being over, but after a static silence and a babble of confusion among the crowd, another video appears. It bears the same introduction as Bae Wonshik's introductory video, with his personal details being listed out. But the deviation happens when his actual relationship with his not one but two daughters are revealed, bringing the hall to a deadly still.
On the screen Soyeon's face comes out, and it takes Danbi a while to realize it's not herself talking. It still feels detached to her how she has a twin who is identical; no, they're not natural twins. From the video, Soyeon opens her mouth to talk, and it seems that the video is playing real time, Soyeon hidden somewhere as she faces the camera, projecting her face to the whole audience. There are bouts of confusion as the audience look back and forth from Danbi to the screen in front, and she is only rigidly staring at the screen.
Bae Soyeon on the screen starts talking, and it falls to silence.
"I'm sure all of you are wondering who I am, talking right here live, when I'm sitting among you."
With the sentence it is as if the audience is collectively turning to look at Danbi, with a confused Mingi and Hongjoong by her side. Danbi stays expressionless
"But that's the point; because I bet that all of you were lied to by my father, thinking that he only has one daughter." There's a scoff coming from Soyeon, "Unfortunately, my father has been nothing but a lying piece of trash who only cares about maintaining his image. He doesn't have only one, but two daughters. We are identical twins, but ah, there's an even more interesting background story on how we came to be. I'll introduce myself; I'm Bae Danbi, the supposed rightful daughter of Bae Wonshik. Whom you see sitting among you, pretending to be someone she's not, is my 'twin'," she stops as there seems to be a taste full of disgust spreading on her tongue as she says the words, "who is only trying to live out her fantasy by becoming the prime minister's daughter. She was Kim Danbi, and the story she has been telling all of you about her being sent off to live at another country was a blatant lie. Both her and my father had come up with a fake identity for herself, spewing out stories that aren't even true yet they did it to maintain the image they have."
There are gasps among the crowd as Danbi's original documents as Kim Danbi is displayed on the screen, followed by several recordings of what seems to come from the CCTV at her different jobs, and to top it off, there are even some recordings of her involved in fights, where it seemed that she was mostly the one throwing punches and kicks.
The screen turns to Soyeon's face again.
"I know someone behind the scenes are probably panicking, looking for a way to turn this display off. It's too bad, because there's no way you can. Don't all of you feel betrayed? The prime minister has been lying to your face but he gets away with it because his daughter had joined in on the act of fooling everyone. The dignified daughter of the prime minister is not who you think she is; she's only a rough girl who would rather throw a punch first than talk. Is this the person you've been looking up to? Is this the person you praised on the media for having been a perfect daughter for the prime minister?"
"Danbi..." Hongjoong utters but she doesn't listen; she's too focused on the screen, trying to make out where Soyeon is currently located.
"Tch," Soyeon clicks her tongue. "It's too bad though, I wanted to expose everything my father did, what lies he has been spewing out as a prime minister, unfit for what he's about to carry. Ah, you'll probably have a list of illegal things my father had done during his years sent to your phones right... about," she smiles, "now."
As if on cue the whole audience erupts with notifications; either those with a tone or silent, but everyone in the room, including Danbi herself has received a message. She doesn't move to open it, even as Mingi and Hongjoong can't hide their shocked expressions as the list is revealed. She lets her phone sit in her clutch.
"Surprised now, are we?" Soyeon takes a deep breath as she tilts her head, "But that's not only it. I can't be only bringing down my family during this big event, can I? Wooyoung," she utters, "did you miss me?"
Wooyoung goes rigid as another shout behind the scenes asking someone to turn the media off bounces off the wall, and the attention is shifted to him. It seems that everyone is transfixed; curious on what's about to be revealed next, a game of guessing for those uninvolved.
"Beloved CEO of Toot Toot Company, hah," she snarls, "all you've been seeing about him is that he's a single, most eligible bachelor isn't he?" She sighs, sounding heavily disappointed. "That's not the case though. Did you know, how we've been dating since high school yet he never told anyone about our relationship? Of course, who would be proud of this girl who only likes to paint, is too quiet? Hmm," she shakes her head, "but I decided I don't like who I was anymore, because that is the person who people take advantage of easily. Right, Madam Jung?"
Madam Jung takes a sharp breath before standing up, shouting at someone to turn the display off right now. She can feel that their family's reputation is about to be destroyed next.
"The Jung family is a whole self-centred, lying, and manipulative household. Huh, it's too bad though. I don't have evidence of them, especially our lovely Madam Jung, throwing insulting words to me just because I'm not who she wants her son's partner to be. It's all verbalized. And no worries, I have just the same list of the illegal things the family has done. I can't be choosy in who I expose, wouldn't I?" There's a smile creeping up on her face. "You're welcomed to take a look."
Just like before, the phones of those inside ping with notifications and again, Danbi refuses to take a look.
"Well, I would like to spend more time exposing some of you here, but my time is cut short because I believe all of you are starting to get restless. You're wondering if you'll be next, but rest assured," she lowers down her voice, "I won't be exposing them today, well, except for one more family. Ah, I wonder where the Yoo family are. I know you're somewhere in the crowd, no need to be shy. Were all of you keeping track about what I said; the part where there's an interesting background story to how the two of us," she says, referring to Danbi, "came to be?"
Yeosang looks for Anna in the crowd, trying to spot her. From afar, he can see that she's currently clinging on to her mother, fear in her eyes. He only balls his fist, unable to do anything except hoping that Soyeon wouldn't be so heartless.
This is not the best friend he knows.
"Did you know that we're made twins not because of natural causes but rather an induced method instead? And because of that... our DNA is a 100% match. We're not twins, we're clones."
Another look of disgust passing over Soyeon's face as there are more questions stirring among the crowd.
"I know, disgusting isn't it? Dr.- wait no, both of you are professors now. Professor Yoo, how does it feel getting involved with a breakthrough? No humans have been successfully cloned before; even if there's a success they'd usually die off before they can start to develop. Look at us," she exclaims, "we grew up healthily, and it's easier to tell people that we're twins rather than trying to get down into complicated medical terms. Oh, shouldn't you be celebrated because you've done something amazing?" She pretends to look concerned, "Oh no, I forgot. It's supposed to be illegal, because this is forcing your way against human nature. Well..." she shrugs, "enjoy my last gift to all of you then. The 'amazing' jobs done by the Yoo household."
For the third time their phones receive more notifications and yet again, Danbi remains unmoving.
"Kim Danbi," Soyeon's voice resonates throughout the hall, knowing that she's purposely putting a stress on her original surname; telling her that she won't accept her as part of the family. "Don't you ever wonder where our father is this evening? You haven't even seen him in the hall, do you think that he'll make a surprise appearance, or will he be somewhere... his life on the line? Ah, it does seem that he got a little confused." She laughs, "Can you believe it? I got access easily because everyone thought I was you. Idiots. Even your own father thought I was you, and let me in easily." She shrugs, "Easier to take him away. Ah, you might want to find out where he is before... things go wrong this evening. Not that it hasn't."
Then the screen turns blank.
"Danbi," Yunho approaches her, but she's still sitting rigidly on her seat, her mind trying to connect the dots.
Danbi gestures for him to wait as she tries to think, as if trying to find the absolute reason for her twin to be doing this. She looks up to see Wooyoung coming to her, the chattering accompanying him as the guests start to make their own speculations, gossiping among them as they have new materials to gossip with. She turns to see San's parents, scared of their reactions after finding out who she is, but Madam Choi has this reassuring look on her face. She decides to focus on one thing now: locating her twin and her father.
"Looks like we're facing some technical difficulties," the announcer for today's event hurriedly speaks through the microphone, asking the people to remain calm. "We'd like to ask for your patience and you to remain in your seats while we try to figure things out. Please, no unnecessary worries as we have things under control-"
There are shouts of anger coming from all directions, towards the poor announcer while Danbi, Wooyoung and Anna, with their families, have been escorted out from the hall, away from the people who might lash out on them.
As Danbi, Wooyoung and Anna are gathered in the waiting room with their bodyguards, the other boys and Madam Seo, they start trying to figure out their next move.
"I'll have to go," Danbi announces. "It has been a problem between us since the beginning. I'll have to talk to her since..." she looks at San, "we didn't get to talk about anything during that night."
"It's dangerous," Seonghwa utters. "We don't know how many people you have behind her. If you go there alone, it won't be advantageous to you. People who hold grudges... don't tend to hear reasonings well. You can't talk to her."
"My father's life is in danger," she presses on. "I can't let her have her way."
"Even now you're still thinking about your father," Hongjoong snaps, the first time they've seen him this angry. "Kim Danbi, he never treated you as his child."
"Because I don't want to be selfish anymore!" Danbi says, exasperated, already standing up as she faces him. "That one night I was selfish and look where it brought us to. Soyeon went missing because of me, and everything happened because of me. All because I was selfish; I wanted to know how it's like living inside the mansion."
"It's not your fault she went missing," Wooyoung speaks up, standing beside her. "It was her own choice."
"A choice that she made after we met that night. I don't care what anyone says, but it's me. I have to go and meet her."
"But we don't even know where she is," Yeosang tries to intervene. "Even if you want to go there you don't know where she is. Or where Sir Bae is. You don't even know whether she's with Sir Bae. For all we know she could be lying and leading us to another winless chase."
She's about to open her mouth to reply but her phone vibrates in her clutch. She takes it out, already knowing who the sender is even if the number is restricted. There are no more guessing games as she opens the message. She doesn't know what to feel as she reads the lines; glad that they have a direction on where they're supposed to go or angry at the fact that her twin is now only messing with her, as if she's tugging on the strings that cut deep through her bloodless wounds.
Danbi says slowly, "She gave me a direction on where they could be, and we don't have time and no choice but to trust her directions."
"Where...?" San asks, already noticing something wrong as he studies her expression.
She looks down at the message, not answering his question first. She chuckles, "I swear, if it rains again tonight," she looks at them, a pained smile on her face, but even more as she looks at San and her two housemates, "I'm going to take it as a bad sign."
Hongjoong sees a glimpse of the message as Danbi holds out her phone and he can't help but hug her, trying to stop her from breaking down. He caresses her hair while saying, "It's okay, you don't have to go there. You don't have to. We'll find another way."
Wooyoung reads the message and he sighs. If before this he knows that there are more about Soyeon that he doesn't know, it seems now she's a full stranger to him. She has changed too much.
Do you know the market in Linaria District with the logo of two birds at their entryway? I heard that they used to sell fresh meat with a really cheap price. Too bad the market had to close because they wanted to demolish the building, but it never happened. Can you imagine, being abandoned at a rundown building? I can't imagine, but I'm sure you can, since you've already experienced it anyway. See you there, sister. Do come alone or you know someone's life will be taken away. I wonder who that is.
"I'm going back," Danbi utters. "To the place I was abandoned for the second time. How nostalgic."
