Danbi screams as she loses another round of cards as she plays with San and his parents at the patio, slowly putting down her set of cards in front. She has seen countless losses, and San has been pulling the winning streak as he brushes all the snacks they put as the prize towards himself. He has been winning nonstop, that even his parents are scratching their heads at how their son is so good at the game that they have no chance at all.
Madam Choi smiles as she sees San sticking out his tongue to Danbi while claiming that he won again, while Danbi looks sulky at the mention of this before attempting to bring him into a headlock before messing up his hair. The older woman looks at her husband before doing a face full of meaning as she tilts her head to the young lovebirds, indicating that maybe they should leave them alone now that it's almost late into the night.
Sir Choi glances at his wife and the two young people before yawning and covering his mouth with his palm as he says, "I really need to sleep now, I still have to go to work tomorrow." He turns to Danbi, "It was nice spending some quality time with you, see you tomorrow morning."
Danbi quickly releases San from her grasp when she sees that both his parents are looking at them with silly smiles on their faces. She stands up when both of his parents do, and she bows at them as San does the same.
"Have a good night, Sir and Madam Choi," she rigidly says, to which Madam Choi laughs before waving her hand.
"No, no, I told you not to call us that. Remember what I told you when I was showing the photo album? Just call me mom," she looks happy to even be able to say that, "and my husband..." She does a mischievous look to his husband, "He doesn't mind too. Honey," she cups Danbi's face, "you're our family now."
With a final wave from Madam Choi and Sir Choi, it's like they have planned in unison to visit the two sometimes, before completely leaving them alone together in a situation that could make it awkward.
She hears San chuckling while munching on one of the snacks he won, and she looks down to see him leaning against the railing, one of his knee up while his other leg is stretched out.
He stretches his arm out as he rests it on his knee. "It's only been one day and my mom has completely fallen in love with you. This day isn't even over yet; I might even have to fight with my mom to win you over," he jokes.
She narrows her eyes before plopping down next to him, feeling the night breeze as the insects' chirring accompanies their night. She leans her head backwards against the railing, hugging her knees to her chest. "I like her; she really knows how to make people feel welcomed."
"Well for one, she is," San takes her hand in his, pulling it onto his lap before stroking it with his thumb, "but it's because she knows that she can trust you. My mom has this... sense? If you can say that. She can pick out my fake friends before I can, it's like she has this third eye that can see through someone who's around us. So if she's nice to you like this," he looks at her, "she trusts you."
She takes some time to think, before replying, "I don't know whether I should be excited how Choi San's mother has accepted me into the family, or be intimidated now that I'm probably an open book."
"They're a huge supporter of the Reflectors, you know," he suddenly says.
"Really?" She looks genuinely surprised that she scoots closer to him before trying to look at him in the eyes. "I mean people like your family could be the targets, and they'd usually be against it in any form. Aren't they... scared?" She tries hard to not make it sound so offensive that she's scrutinizing every change in San's expression.
He chuckles, "They know that they are probably in the list too, but considering the Reflectors' modus operandi now, they- you," there's a slight smile at the end of his sentence, "-don't break into someone's house without a reason. The houses are all those who have been on the 'dirty' list except that the law doesn't punish them accordingly. So to my parents, if this house were to get robbed by the Reflectors, they'll say that they had it coming and deserved it."
"Huh." Her eyes drop to the floor. She can't believe she's having a conversation about the Reflectors with someone else, about how they're doing the right thing, let alone with the prince's second cousin.
"Their thoughts are always a bit eccentric... a bit... how should I put this? A bit unconventional. That also might be the reason why our family is kind of separated from the other," he puts up quotation marks, "'royal' families. Our thinking is slightly different."
"But they're breaking the law," she refers to the Reflectors, still referring to them in the third point of view. She doesn't feel like a part of them anymore, now that she's been caught for breaking into the house that night and how she's desperately trying to erase any connection she has with them.
"Hmm," he hums, before resting his head on her shoulder. She goes slightly rigid, but lets him stay there anyway. "It's true. But when the law fails the public, people will herald the Reflectors as heroes. A lot of justification is done; they don't hurt people, they only steal from those who are filthy rich, they target those who flouted the law. They're setting things straight by slightly bending the rules."
Their ears perk up instinctively as the grandfather clock somewhere in the house chimes to signify that it's already midnight, and after the chiming stops, they bask in the silence.
With his head still on her shoulder, he closes his eyes as he drawls, "Are you happy with the life you have now?"
She presses her lips together, her breath hitting against his hair as she thinks of the answer to the question that she feels too difficult to answer. She looks beyond the patio, to the night sky before she sighs.
"I don't know honestly." She rests her chin on his head before moving it, rustling his hair. "I should be, shouldn't I? This was what I wanted, why I came to that house. But," she grips his hand tighter, "I can't help but think that I was the reason Soyeon ran away. Now I provoked something within her, and what if she- what if she changed after that night because of me?" She doesn't give any context, but he's fully aware of what she's referring to.
He lets the conversation linger in the air before he lifts up his head and lets go of her hand.
She looks at him enquiringly, wondering why he's suddenly standing up before she follows suit, feeling slightly worried once if he realizes that he doesn't want anything to do with her.
"I know it was you," he says. It doesn't sound threatening nor scary, but instead he sounds disappointed.
She fumbles with her words, "You said it. You knew that I was the one who broke into Soyeon's house that night. What do you mean?"
"That's not what I meant, the four of us," he refers to his teammates, "already know that. Madam Seo explained what happened that night, but we're told not to blow the case into a bigger proportion, especially since Soyeon did say that she didn't want anyone to know about this case."
"Don't tell me," she breathes, "that you're a part of the Reflectors too. A member? A dealer like Yunho and Jongho?"
He lets out a heavy breath before shaking his head. "Seonghwa and I are not a part of the Reflectors; we didn't even know our own boss is an organizer in the Reflectors. We didn't know that Yunho and Jongho were a part of them. Madam Seo came clean after the election of the day and your father won. She explained everything about how you only made a mistake, that you didn't have anything to do with Soyeon's disappearance. She told us to stay put in the search for Soyeon because this has involved something else; the Reflectors' position. She's worried that Soyeon disappearing means that Soyeon is about to do something dangerous."
"Then what did you mean?" she presses on, "When you said that you know it was me."
"We had a conversation before we even knew who each of us are," he starts, locking his eyes with her. "But I called you by a different name; I mistook you for our client at that time, Soyeon. And no, I'm not talking about when you were on the way for the interview; that was our second meeting." He looks down, as if disappointed, "Our first was in the painting studio. When I came running after I heard Soyeon scream; the one in the studio was you. You pointed to the door, asking me to find the Reflectors. I thought I was talking to Soyeon at that time, but it was you."
She stands frozen in place, but San's face is telling her that he's not mad at her, merely disappointed that he didn't recognize her faster. "I'm sorry," she shakes her head as she utters, "I didn't know what to do at that time. We-" her hands fly to her chest, as if trying hard to defend herself, "-bumped into each other at the painting studio; that was where I got access. I-" she feels her throat tightening, feeling like she's only spitting lies even though she's been speaking nothing but the truth, "-climbed through the open window. I wasn't thinking straight, I just wanted a way to enter the house. I thought there wasn't anyone there because the room was dark and the lights weren't even on, but as soon as I landed I saw Soyeon sitting in front of the easel, only staring at the painting of the two people. She screamed when she saw me, but she fell down and she just- she picked herself up before she ran out of the room and I didn't know what happened to her after. When you," she breathes, "you came at the door, I didn't know what to do and I sat in front of the easel. I just- I just needed time to get out of the house before I was caught."
"So you had to send me away," he says. "That's why you were pointing somewhere else, saying that the Reflectors went away. To bring me away from the studio so that you could buy some time to escape."
"I swear," she pleads, "I didn't do anything to Soyeon. I didn't even touch her; we just saw each others' faces and both of us were too shocked. When she ran out of the room I knew that I had to run away, but when you came to the studio, I didn't know what else to do besides sending you away. After that night, I didn't know what went on in the mansion and I didn't know that Soyeon ran away, not until you stopped me that day. When you mistook me for Soyeon again."
He releases a short breath after confirming his suspicions. He looks at her, who looks defensive but at the same time he can see her trying hard not to cry. "That was the real reason you came back, didn't you? You're not someone vying for money; you're not materialistic. You're not someone like that."
Again, she's surprised by how quick San has managed to catch her real feelings and intentions. She lowers down her eyes but he approaches her, gently holding her face so that she'll look at him. "When I saw Soyeon that night; I knew that there are a lot of stories that I deserve to know. I didn't even know I had a twin, and I pretended I didn't know what you were talking about when you saved me from the car accident; I wanted nothing to do with it, because I felt guilty. I broke into someone else's house just because curiosity got the better of me; I told myself that I just wanted a look. But then you mentioned about Soyeon missing, and at that moment I wanted nothing but to find out why. What is the mystery surrounding the Bae household? The household that I was supposed to be a part of but couldn't because I was abandoned when I was a baby. I thought that I could find a family there, but even now my twin has run away. So I guess, the answer to your question is no, I'm not happy." She blabbers nonstop that she doesn't even realize that San is poking her cheeks so that she'll stop, "I understand if you're angry, that you want nothing to do with me-"
San pokes her cheeks harder until she has no choice but to stop talking. When she's quiet, he wipes the tears from her eyes and says, "Kim Danbi, ah, Bae Danbi. If I wanted to do nothing with you, I wouldn't even confess to you just now, silly. I'm not angry; I told you that Madam Seo had explained everything to us. You ran away from them, didn't you? After you realized that you made a mistake, you tried to remove yourself from being a part of the Reflectors. I'm not mad at you, but madly in love with you."
Danbi looks at him, frowning, before giving a light punch to his stomach. "Shut up, don't try pretending to be sweet after you said all those stuff to me. Why did you look as if you were angry? You suddenly stood up and let go of my hand without even saying anything. Then you started speaking about this thing, with your tone and your face," she starts to blabber again, "showed as if you're angry at me."
He uncups her face before holding her hands in each of his, saying, "There, I held your hands again, happy?"
She rolls her eyes before attempting to wriggle free from his hold. "No, I want to go to sleep because you made me cry and made me think that you're angry at me. Good night."
She skitters to the sliding doors as he sidles up to her, asking her to wait for him. As she slides the door open, he bends to the side so that he can look at her as she puts her head down. She doesn't look at him as they step inside the house and he playfully goes from one side to the other, wanting to look at her expression but she's not letting him as she dodges her face from side to side.
He says in a singsong voice, "I never knew Danbi could get angry cutely like this, this is the first time I've seen her being so sulky."
She doesn't say anything as they step into the lift, pressing the button to get to the fourth floor, where their bedrooms are. They stay in silence with the whirring of the vehicle bringing them up to the fourth floor. When the door opens, both of them are only leaning against the wall, as if both of them do not want to get out. When the door is about to close again only does she make a move, with him following behind.
She only nods a good night to him before shutting the door behind her. A few seconds later she hears screaming from San's bedroom and panicking, she dashes out of her room before peering to the next room, whose door is wide open. She looks at him questioningly as he's currently standing on the bed, legs slightly shaking.
"Why are you standing on the bed?" she asks hurriedly.
"There's a freaking cockroach in my room! When I opened the door it was sitting right... there..." He points to the floor, and sure enough the cockroach is chilling on one spot under his table.
"You're scared of cockroaches?" she snorts, almost sounding like she's about to make fun of him. "So you want me to kill it for you?" She smirks as she takes off one of her house slippers before holding it like a weapon. "If you do, say please."
He pouts as he puts his palms together. "Please, kill it for me."
"Right away, young master San."
She advances towards the table wearing only one slipper while the pair is in her hand, and she grips it tightly. She only focuses on the cockroach and as she approaches it slowly, she holds the slipper above her head, wanting to finish it with one smack.
The cockroach moves slightly and when it sees a threat, it spreads its wings before Danbi comes to a realization full of horror. She screams before she loses grip on the slipper, the cockroach already flying straight to her. She jumps around the room as the insect chases her while flying, and in the end she jumps on the bed before both her and San tumble on the mattress, entangled while they are cowering in fear of the flying insect.
"Where is it?" Danbi whispers, gripping San's shirt as her eyes dart all around the room.
San gulps at how they're positioned on the bed, but it seems that Danbi is too busy looking for the cockroach. He tries to move away slightly so that some of his body parts are not crushed before clearing his throat.
"I don't think I can sleep here tonight," San utters, looking down at Danbi whose eyes are still on the watch.
"Right. On the count to three, we need to run out of here, got it?" Danbi taps his chest before sitting up straight, eyes scanning the whole room. She can't spot the cockroach anywhere so she starts counting, thinking that it's the best chance for them to escape. "One, two-" Before she even manages to finish counting they hear the horrible fluttering of the cockroach's wings and as if in an orchestra both San and Danbi scream.
They scramble to get up and head for their chance to escape, that even as San was struggling to right himself up from the bed, Danbi scoops him up in her arms before she runs towards the door. They tumble to the carpeted floor outside and she hastily puts him down before reaching out for the door handle to close the door. She swings it until she hears the door click shut before managing to take a proper breath.
San looks at her feet which is covered on the left but the slipper on the right is nowhere to be seen before chuckling.
She huffs. "Why are you laughing?"
He mimics her face. "Because you sounded really brave when you wanted to smack the cockroach and made fun of me because I was scared of them." He extends out his arms, "Now look at us, stuck outside the room because you couldn't kill it and went screaming instead."
She frowns before attempting to take her other slipper and hitting his body multiple times using it. "That's because it's a flying cockroach. Flying cockroaches are on the horror list, so they're an exception."
He still can't stop laughing that he has to turn his face away to stop from it getting worse. When he's done he sighs, "Well, looks like I have to sleep somewhere else tonight. Thank you," he presses his lips, "although the cockroach is still alive and healthy but at least we got out of there in one piece."
He turns around and he counts down the numbers before she stops him, and he smiles to himself before turning around, feigning innocence.
"Wait, where are you sleeping tonight?" she blinks. "I mean... on this floor?"
He shrugs before shaking his head. "No. All the rooms on this floor are occupied by our workers so I'd have to find another room on other floors. Don't worry," his eyes dart to her in the most innocent look possible, "there are plenty rooms."
"Oh I see," she nods, before slowly backing away to stand in front of her room. "Good night then, I hope you have a nice sleep."
She's only standing there without stepping inside, and he looks at her questioningly as to why she's still not entering her room. She transfers her weight from one bare foot to another before gesturing to his room hesitantly. "Well, if the cockroach is in your room and my room is beside yours." She says in a smaller voice, "It could slip inside mine but then I won't be able to ask anyone for help because you're not next door."
"There are other people on this floor," he gestures towards the other rooms.
"But they're not awake. They didn't even hear you scream."
He laughs, his dimples on full display as he shakes his head. "You sound like you're making up excuses."
"I'm not. Forget about it; if you find me dead the next morning because of the cockroach, my ghost will come looking for you." She turns around to step inside the room but she does it slowly while subtly looking over her shoulder to see whether San is moving to stop her.
He doesn't. He only watches her with his eyes, already waving good night innocently to her.
She shuts the door before grumbling about how San really seems like the type who can't get the clues. Thinking that she just needs to be upfront with him, she swings the door open again, finding him standing at a distance in front of her door.
"Did I do something wrong again?" he asks.
She stares at him before her lips purse. "No," she lies before she rolls up her eyes and backtracking, "Well I'd say sleep with me but that kind of sounded too direct." When his eyes bulge from her words she slightly steps back. "I didn't mean sleep as in doing that, you know. But the actual sleeping putting our heads on the pillows and closing our eyes, then waking up the next morning. Innocently."
"Sure," he says.
This time, she pulls back her head before staring at him. "Did I hear that right?"
He shrugs. "If not, I'll be on my way."
"Wait, wait, wait." She clamps her hands on his shoulders again, just like she did at the park. "You can't just give your agreement and walk away."
"Then am I allowed to come in?" He lifts up an eyebrow.
She doesn't answer but leaves the door open, before she plops down on the bed and rests on her side.
He walks inside, shutting the door behind him before he moves over to the sofa and lies down.
She's looking at him from the bed, their eyes meeting as the sofa is directly beside the bed. "Good night," she says slowly.
He replies the same, but even as they say good night to each other, either one refuses to close their eyes.
Hongjoong's advice about how 'San is still a man' lingers in her mind that she can't keep her eyes shut, thinking about how she's been acting unlike herself the moment she decides that she likes him.
Their eyes automatically go towards the window when they hear raindrops pattering against it, raining for the second time tonight. She curls herself on the bed and now she can't close her eyes anymore now that it's started raining. She lifts up her head slightly when she sees him making his way over to her, before he obediently sits down on the floor beside her bed.
"If you're scared to sleep because of the rain, I'll be here," he says. "If you're uncomfortable I can sit somewhere else."
She scoots to the other side of the bed, leaving some space before she quietly pats on it. When he points towards the space with a questioning look she nods.
He sits on the bed but she taps the pillow, asking him to sleep there. Then she turns her body away so that they're not facing each other.
Awkwardly San lies down on the bed, looking up at the ceiling as he puts a hand at the back of his head. He turns to see Danbi unmoving, and he can't see her face or whether she's already asleep.
"Are you sure you can sleep?" he asks her.
Still with her face and body turned to the other side, she does an attempt to shake her head. "No."
"Do you want a hug?"
His answer is her scooting closer to him, and he doesn't hesitate to pull her into a hug. He strokes her hair as she closes her eyes, and she's content now that his heartbeat drowns out the sound of the heavy rain.
He utters, "Don't you sleep when it's raining?"
"I never do; the noise is always too loud and sometimes I just wear my earphones to drown out the sound. But I never get to sleep."
He looks at her worriedly. "So even as I do this you probably won't sleep."
"Hmm," she says. "Unless there's something distracting me."
"Ah," he tries to joke, "looks like even my face is not a distraction for you."
"I've been distracted by your face all day, so that's not a question. I'd probably need a new distraction. Speaking of a distraction, I'm kind of hungry."
"Honestly, me too," he replies.
"But everyone's already asleep and it's too late into the night."
"Agree," he sighs. "I guess we have to bear with our hungry stomachs until tomorrow morning."
"Can't wait, and I feel like time would move so slowly if I can't sleep." She shuts her eyes again before chanting, "I need to sleep."
"Well..." he utters. "We can do something to make time move faster without us realizing."
Her body goes frozen, Hongjoong's words about how San is still a man resonating loudly in her brain. Stupid Danbi. Her hand finally moves a bit to find a pillow before slamming it onto San. "It's only our first day and you're already suggesting," she hits him again, but he doesn't have time to protect himself. "Us to do that?" She scoots further away from him, and he looks at her after being falsely accused.
"I was suggesting for us to watch movies, what on earth are you thinking? No, no," he shakes his head, "what makes that the first thing you thought about when I said that?"
"Oh," she enunciates, embarrassed that she misunderstood him. "I mean, you could've said it clearly."
"Well you invited me in," he shrugs, "and on your bed. I'm innocent."
She huffs before trying to change the topic. "Fine then, let's go and watch whatever movie you were thinking of."
"Nah, I'm kind of sleepy already," he shuts his eyes as he drapes a hand over his eyes. "Good night." His face breaks into a smile as he feels Danbi cozying up to him, resting her head on his arm. He lifts up the arm that's covering his eyes before stretching it out to pull her closer. He opens his eyes and lowers down his head to plant a kiss on her lips.
Before she's able to react he's already closed his eyes, the smile never leaving his face. They end up falling asleep together, with San not even letting his arm around her loose, protecting her from the rain that has always prevented her from falling asleep.
This time around, she gets a dreamless sleep, feeling glad that as she wakes up, San is still there.
Never like the days I was left alone.
