Living in the mansion doesn't mean that the two housemates - Hongjoong and Mingi - stopped working altogether. They know that despite having the privilege of tagging along with Danbi to their new place to stay doesn't mean that they can stop generating their own income; the money won't flow to them unless they work. The only one whose life might have changed, either slightly or drastically, is Danbi's.
First, it's her name. If she were to present herself as Wonshik's daughter, keeping her surname as 'Kim' would definitely raise some eyebrows and that unnecessary attention to that detail is not what they can afford. She feels it's a shame to be letting go of the name that had made her feel like she's really related to Hongjoong, but she knows that it's her end of the deal.
What does surprise her is how fast they came up with the documents for her, when Wonshik's secretary came to have a somewhat official meeting with her, only a day after they've moved in. It took them only two days to prepare all her identification card that shows the name 'Bae Danbi' instead of her usual 'Kim', just two days before the election. They sure do work fast; even the photoshoot to get her passport photo feels a lot longer than the actual processing.
By the second day she's living in the mansion, she's already known as Bae Danbi, addressed as such by the workers there. Still feeling detached from the name, she feels more at ease when the boys call her Kim Danbi instead. Yeosang on the other hand, flat out refuses to attach the 'Bae' surname to her, claiming that it's only legible for his best friend who's still gone without any news.
Even though the driver's hatred towards the three, and to Danbi especially, seemed strong, his treatment towards them is much milder than what they'd expect. Despite looking like he's had enough of them, he still helps them more than what they expected from him. He shows them around the house, even though his face is tight throughout, only saying that he's helping because he didn't want them to 'ruin the house' while they're there.
So far, they're allowed to roam the house as much as the bodyguards, and just like the four, they're not allowed to the floor where Soyeon's bedroom is.
The bodyguards resume their work as such, but it truly seems now that Danbi and Soyeon are interchangeable; they have stopped searching for her altogether with the instruction from Bae Wonshik. Only Wooyoung is having the search continued, but the intensity is obviously reduced, even more so as Wonshik is already subtly telling him that with the elections around the corner, things might not be the same anymore.
With her new surname comes new responsibilities; that means learning how to act properly as the daughter of a famous candidate, getting ready for the possible swarms of people about to be up in their business.
She's currently sitting in one of the rooms where they call a 'meeting room' in the mansion, where back then in their house a 'meeting' would only be held in their common area while watching TV and munching on some nuts. Right now, she's sitting in the closed room with her bodyguards around her, with Yeosang shoving the whiteboard to her face as he starts to brief on the important people she needs to know.
"So what you're saying is I have to know the names of all these people, because they're my..." she still finds the word foreign to her, "...father's acquaintances. What next, what they like to eat and whether they're a morning or night person?"
"Essentially," Yeosang grumbles. "To put yourself out there, you'd need basic information on these people. You can't just go to them and be like, 'Hey, you seem familiar, but I don't remember your name'. In politics and business, it's all about connections. To get people on your side, you learn about them, make them feel flattered that you remember even the smallest details about them. That's how you can move up, because you have support from the people. How do you think your father gets to be up in the social ladder? Flattery works best."
"Wow," she enunciates before leaning against the chair until it looks like it's about to break, "this is my first time hearing someone blatantly pointing out the... let's see, hazy tricks you use in this world. Truly different from what I know; I guess the life of the rich I've seen in dramas aren't a lie after all."
"They're exaggerated," he supplies, "but among the exaggeration there are more truth than lies. To get rich is one thing, but to maintain your social status is another. You have to play big to keep it afloat."
"Wow," she says again, "such big words. I guess you and I are truly different."
"You and I..." he trails off before turning to the board, hiding his expression from her and the bodyguards. It looks like he's about to speak to the board as he writes down something. He lets the silence linger for a moment as he caps the marker. "...are nothing different." He puts down the marker and it clanks against the pen tray. "Just read up on all the details of the people you should know, learn how you should act if you need to go to any official events. I doubt Sir Bae would bring you to all of his events, but there would be some and you need to know how to act appropriately. Know what to speak, what to do, and what to avoid."
She's about to give an agreement but he continues talking, this time taking a seat near her; the closest he's been ever since she moved in.
"Listen," he says, "You and Soyeon are different, I get that. But things will surely get complicated when the people out there find out that Sir Bae has two daughters instead of one. But right now, all he wants to do is introduce only one." He's still beating around the bush, leaving Danbi trying to pick up the clues on what he's telling her.
"So what you're saying is, I can't act like her."
There's a prominent softness in Yeosang's eyes, again the first of what she's seen of him. "Bae Soyeon wouldn't even go to events like this, let alone allow herself to be exposed to the real world. What I'm saying is, although you're her... twin, you don't have to force yourself to act somewhat different. Because no matter how much you look like her, you're not Bae Soyeon."
It's the same sentence of him reminding her that she's essentially not able to replace Soyeon in any way. But this time, it's different in the sense that he's implying something... kinder. Again a detached personality from the Yeosang she has come to know.
"Don't act like her, because you're not. You're Bae Danbi, and that's who you should be." He wrings his hands, noticing that even the bodyguards are shifting in their positions, surprised by his gradual change in attitude towards her. "I thought about what you said, how not everyone is lucky to be born rich. I was simply thinking of my best friend who's still missing, yet I can't do anything much because I'm incapable. You're right, the actual people who have the power," he's referring to Wonshik, "don't even do anything. When you have money, the power comes with it, and not everyone knows how to utilize them well. It's not fair that I'm treating you like this when it's not even your fault, especially since your divergent lives went way back when you were only babies."
She bites her lower lip, slightly taken aback from the moment that he has addressed her as Bae Danbi instead of a Kim. She doesn't say anything as she senses his sincere emotion delivered through every sentence that he says as he taps his fingers against the table.
"I just- Soyeon has been misunderstood ever since she was little, how people would say that she's too quiet until they thought she was mute. Kids made fun of her, saying that once she grows up she would lose the ability to speak because she doesn't know how to."
Danbi feels her chest tightening, the sadness about to consume her but she doesn't let her expression betray her. She remains expressionless, trying to fool the others from knowing about the storm raging inside of her.
How ironic; our lives are too different yet at one point, there was something that's similar. What is this, a parallel destiny but in different forms?
"But she never cried about it, because she told me that it's true. How she doesn't like to speak, only talking to certain people like me. Even then she doesn't talk much; people thought there's something wrong with her when really, there's nothing. She just doesn't want to speak. People are so quick to judge and in the end, she isolated herself, and it became worse when her mother passed away."
"So people throw her away, outcast her because she was too... quiet?" she asks, a scoff coming as she finds it ridiculous. "Kids... some of them can be too mean you'd wonder how it's like for them at home." She croaks, "Sometimes I don't even know what people want. Too quiet, they say you can't talk. Too noisy, they ask you to shut up."
"She keeps too much to herself, not even I understand her whole story. If she's something mysterious to me, can you imagine how mysterious she is to the others?"
"Why do you think she ran away?" she suddenly asks. "Pressure, something changing?"
Yeosang notices the look that she's giving him. She knows. She knows that I know something and is not telling.
"You're not telling something, and I know that."
The bodyguards lose their demeanour this time, genuinely surprised at her revelation. Her face remains calm as she tries to extract what he knows.
"You're not telling because it's a secret between you and her, isn't it? But somehow, this time around there's something different, even made worse when I suddenly appeared. You don't know how to make out of this situation."
His shoulders sag, looks like someone finally caught on. Funny, how it's a stranger that asked him the first question regarding her.
"How can you figure it out?" he asks, but there's a slight doubt at the end of his sentence. "You said you don't go for tertiary education so I can't say that you took up psychology. What made you ask that question?"
She shrugs. "I just tend to read a lot on random topics. You're feeling guilty so you're projecting that hatred towards us three who just moved in, saying that I can never replace her. Yet you're not panicking as much because this has happened before, but you're slightly agitated because there's something different about it this time. You're trying to stay calm and convince yourself that this is not something unusual, but you can't help and think that there is a need to panic because she's never done something like this. She's not informing you where she went?"
"Wait, Kang Yeosang," Yunho voices, breaking off from the group before taking a seat next to Yeosang. "You knew?"
"You knew and you never told us?" Jongho says, slight irritation coming up to him as he, too takes a seat but next to Danbi. "When we were running around trying to find her, unsure of where we should even start?"
"You could've told us," San says, heavily disappointed. "Maybe there could be a change and we could catch up to her faster."
"There's a reason why he's not telling us," Seonghwa is the only one out of the four who doesn't go straight to blaming Yeosang, believing that there must be a reason why he decided to stay quiet when they were running around hoping to get a glimpse on Bae Soyeon on the streets.
Yeosang releases a heavy breath, but he looks composed. In fact, he looks relieved that someone finally asked him that question, so he doesn't feel as guilty if he were to suddenly break the unspoken rule without a push.
"Soyeon always goes missing."
"What?!" the bodyguards simultaneously shout, but Yeosang quickly shushes them.
"Keep your voices down, this is only between us." When Danbi gives him the look, he relents, "Okay, I guess Hongjoong and Mingi can know about it too."
"What about her boyfriend?" Jongho asks.
"Maybe not now, because honestly... I don't know whether it has anything to do with their relationship."
"Right," she nods, "proceed. And no interruptions."
She puts out a finger to the rest of the boys. They nod fervently, eyes wide as they lean forward, as if trying to make a fort to make sure that the words will not escape.
"She always goes missing, but every single time she'd come back in say, a few days. No one usually notices because technically, I helped her allude the others. And... you see, her presence is very unnoticeable, even inside her own home." He looks at the bodyguards and they nod, confirming his statement. "Every time I would drop her off at some place she asked me to, then I'd just drive back. None of the workers notice, but then she'd end up appearing a few days after at home."
"Wait a minute," she puts up a hand, politely trying to interfere. "Like, suddenly? How did she get in if there are guards at both entrances? Surely they'd notice how she could suddenly get inside."
"I've... been wondering that too but I never actually asked her." He sighs, "I know, this sounds bad when I'm her best friend but I guess she needs something to keep to herself too. I can't be asking her every single thing she's been doing; she's an adult who's capable of making decisions. She never got hurt, and that's all that matters to me."
"So you've been aiding her escape every time," Seonghwa says. "It's not unusual for her to go missing."
"No one knows except you," Jongho echoes. "You're the only person who knows that she's been going on this... adventure somewhere, only this time around she didn't come back in a few days."
"Well, Anna-" he corrects himself, "her neighbour knows, but that's only because she's been looking for her and I told her."
"Could there be a secret passage to this house?" Danbi starts to wonder. "An underground tunnel of some sorts."
"Or she could've climbed up the wall surrounding the compound. The compound is big, so it's not impossible that she could've used any area so she won't get caught. Security is there, but you can't deny that it's not enough to deter someone from actually coming into the compound and into the house," Yunho concludes.
"You're right," Yeosang comes to a realization. "So what could've happened was that her escape was easy because I helped her. The guards either don't notice or they just simply don't ask, because that's the rule in a neighbourhood like this. You don't run your mouth asking questions because everyone has their own secrets they want to keep. It's just an unspoken rule in this society."
"Antisocials, but at the time socialites, how lovely," Danbi comments. "Kind of ironic."
"You see," Yeosang starts again, trying to bring the focus on one thing at a time. "They're only being socialites at certain places; public events, expensive restaurants where they meet to eat and drink together, lavish parties where everyone look to outdo each other in terms of wealth they can display. That's when connections are important, because the more people you know, the more they regard you as someone highly respectable. Like I said and I can't stress this enough, connections are important."
"But at the same time they need to be antisocial, guarding their own interests," San joins in, looking like he knows what he's talking about. "What happens here, stays inside. A guarded society, both literally and figuratively. So even if someone dies inside this neighbourhood, this compound... no one outside would know. Their lips are tightly shut. And people learn how to mind their own business. You don't have people here going to their neighbour's house while claiming they baked some pie and would like to share. They just don't. To each their own."
Seonghwa shows a reaction to the part where San mentioned about how no one would know if someone were to die in the guarded neighbourhood that his hands start to shake before he curls them into fists. No one notices how he's blinking rapidly to get rid of the tears.
"So people just turn their heads away," Jongho continues. "That's why no one knew Soyeon went missing. Bae Wonshik is not announcing it, no one cares to find out what happened to their neighbours and even if they do, they don't say anything about it."
"Bingo. That's why it's easy for her to go missing once in a while. Not even her workers in this house notice, let alone the people outside. Even if they do, they all keep quiet because it's none of their business. The only problem is, I don't know how she always gets back to the house without anyone noticing."
"She slips in quietly?" Yunho offers his idea again, but Yeosang quickly shakes his head, throwing away the idea.
"She's not good at those stuff. She's not agile, she can't be climbing walls."
"Or you just don't know her enough," she says. "You did say that there are some things that you don't know about her even though she's been your friend since forever."
Yeosang pauses before nodding slowly. "I guess that's true, so there are a lot of possibilities, but I don't even know where to start."
"Have you ever considered..." San throws in an idea, "that she may have been involved with the Reflectors?"
"What?" Yeosang frowns, clearly not having the idea at all. "Soyeon? Reflectors? That's the last thing I'd be thinking of connecting her to."
San shrugs. "Just an idea, you never know."
"Is there anything else different this time, besides the fact that she didn't return a few days after?" Danbi chips in.
Yeosang mentions about the fact that her phone has its data wiped off, about how she would have brought her phone every time before this.
"So... it's like she's not planning to come back?" Yunho suggests.
"Exactly what I was thinking."
Some of them shift in their seats when they hear this declaration, obviously having something new pop up in their heads.
"It has something to do with the Reflectors," Seonghwa suddenly says, surprising everyone when he had only kept his silence. "I'm not 100% sure but this does have a similarity to how they work. If you are involved with the Reflectors, if you decide to go rogue or you're simply... gone they'll wipe off the data that you have in your phone. In fact, there's a high chance that you won't find anything in her laptop or digital records that she keeps."
"Define 'simply gone'." Yeosang frowns.
"Dead." He doesn't give any reaction to the others' surprise. "To them, this is their way of concealing their identities. They don't want anything that their members have to lead back to them. You have to remember that they're a society made up most likely of a lot of people, and you can't have one member slip up and destroy the whole hierarchy. So to do that, you wipe off the data that could possibly link them to the Reflectors."
"But that just proves that the data of the people they wiped off are involved with them. That could jeopardize their standing," Yunho clips in.
"True," Seonghwa replies, a finger playing around with his ring. "But they would rather risk the slip up of a member being involved with them, rather than having their entire info of them leaked. Well, it's proven to be effective isn't it? Even though people have been speculating on who are involved with the Reflectors, they never actually reported it. Because these people have already gone missing, or worse, they're dead. No one actually dared reporting any members of the Reflectors officially because they don't have the full picture yet. All speculations, but years go by and they're not caught yet. They're a web full of members, probably."
"So you're saying that Soyeon is a member of the Reflectors," Yeosang says, full of doubts. "But she said that she saw the Reflectors that night, are you saying that she's purposely pointing to her own member, asking us to chase them down? Why would she do that?"
Danbi's ears perk up; this is the first time she's been told of such info, about how the Reflectors appeared in this house during that night before she's gone missing.
"Maybe," Jongho pipes up, "she did something against their rules, and they're coming back to get her? But when that went awry, they kidnapped her instead."
"But there are a lot of holes in this story," Yunho decides. "She went out on her own will; if she knew the Reflectors are coming for her, she'd ask us to tighten the security, even when she's inside the house. But she was the one who asked to go out, remember?"
"That's what's making everything confusing. The fact that there's a possibility my best friend is involved with the Reflectors is definitely making me surprised."
"That's actually a lot of insider info that you know... how do you know all of this?" San's eyebrows knit.
All eyes turn to Seonghwa, and he knows that the question would come eventually. There's no reason for him to keep it to himself anymore. "Because I was involved with them, and they were also the reason why I took a break some time ago."
