If it's a staring challenge between Seonghwa and Danbi, it looks like not one is losing because neither is giving in. It's only breaking off when Danbi chuckles before chanting, "If I know the answer, I wouldn't be asking, would I?"
"Or maybe you know the answer but you're not telling," he interjects. "What are the odds that you were on the way of going for an interview to her boyfriend's company, then got pulled back by her bodyguard because you look like her?"
She takes a deep breath, her hand tightly gripping her cup's handle. "I don't know, maybe it was some destiny. Don't you think that life is always mysteriously revolving around some destiny you can't control?"
"I don't believe in destinies," he says, hard. "It's always the same bullshit reason people start to use when they can't explain why something happens."
The bodyguards start to feel the tension, unsure of why Seonghwa is starting to act unlike himself- at least, not as someone they know. The other three spectators only look back and forth from the girl to the oldest, not knowing which side they should be on.
"Damn," she enunciates, "why are you so pressed?" She looks like she's not about to fight about it further as she takes up her cup, sipping her tea while looking elsewhere. The silence continues before she breaks a biscuit in half, but ends up gobbling both while the rest keep their mouth shut.
"Alright, that's it for today!" Hongjoong says in high pitch, glaring at Danbi before twisting her ear and then slapping the back of Seonghwa's head.
Seonghwa looks shocked at how the tiny man, whom he only met today is already acting like he can do whatever he likes to him, until he doesn't know how to give a proper reaction. If it's another stranger he'd probably smack them to the ground, but this guy is looking too scary despite being smaller than him.
"Not that attitude in my house," Hongjoong points a finger to Seonghwa before moving on to Danbi. "You too, both of you apologize to each other, now."
"Tch," Seonghwa crosses his arms but Hongjoong smacks the back of his head again until he can't stand it that he starts to say through gritted teeth, "You little-" Another smack to the back of his head.
"I don't tolerate rude guests," the blue-haired man says, putting out a threatening hand to say that he won't hesitate to hit him again.
"Stupid blueberry," Seonghwa says grudgingly, but the other hears it before he gets another smack to the head. "Stop hitting my head!"
"I will if both of you act nice to each other," he utters. "Apologize, now."
"I'm sorry," Danbi says first, bringing their gazes to her immediately. "I understand what you're trying to get at, but it was pure coincidence that San found me while I was on the way to Wooyoung's company."
It amazes them again, how different Danbi's personality is with Soyeon; she's already on a first name basis with them yet with their original client it took more than a week for her to be comfortable with calling them by their first names. They watch the face-off eagerly, with San and Yunho munching on the biscuits like they are eating popcorn while watching a movie playing.
"I guess... I'm sorry too."
"Not a sincere apology," Hongjoong comments.
"I'm sorry!" Seonghwa enunciates before holding back a fist, looking like he's about to punch Hongjoong in the face. "I shouldn't have let my emotions take over me, so I'm sorry."
"You could do better," Hongjoong shrugs. "But I'll let it pass. Now please, gentlemen, I'd like to kick you out of this house if you don't explain on how we're going to do this now."
"We'd like to officially invite Danbi to the mansion," Jongho comments. "To meet with Bae Wonshik. Perhaps... he has some explanation to do, or he's as confused as we are, because we, too, have absolutely no idea what's going on here."
Hongjoong and Mingi turn to look at Danbi, but he knows what reaction they're expecting; of course their housemate would not let this opportunity slip away as she has always wanted to associate herself with Bae Wonshik. They couldn't understand her obsession in wanting to have something to do with him, or perhaps it is only her wishing she could have had a real family, and Bae Wonshik's face has been appearing too much that she's starting to weave both separate ideas together.
"So what you're asking me is to go and meet him, right?"
Yunho nods before San joins in. "It's what he requested."
"When?"
Jongho takes a look at his watch before tilting his head to the right, "Well... if you have nothing then, now would be ideal."
---
Their goal was to only bring back Danbi, but now there are two cars cruising on the highway side by side, with the bodyguards in their own vehicle while Wooyoung has offered to bring Danbi together with her housemates to Aurora Heights. Despite excited in finally being able to step inside the area that were off-limits to her, she doesn't forget about her housemates as she pleaded to bring them along as she's slightly skeptical and she believes that having them together would make her more at ease.
With her housemates at the backseat and her at the passenger front seat, Wooyoung unknowingly keeps on glancing to the side, almost chuckling at how she seems so in awe of the world around her, as if she hasn't been outside for longer than a minute. She keeps saying how the world looks different when she's in an expensive car, as if the tinted windows are giving her their own perspective of the world. She keeps pointing out random stuff towards her housemates, who gape at whatever she pointed out, making themselves look like three people with the same moulded expressions.
Wooyoung hides a smile; Danbi may look in all aspects the same as Soyeon, but the moment he sees how she acts, it's enough to tell him that the person currently seated beside him is not her. For someone like Soyeon, who finds that her home is the safest place, going out is not something exciting. Whenever they'd go out together - even then it's something very rare - she'd look like she'd love to be anywhere but there. It used to make him slightly sulky, but he had come to understand that their personalities are different, that Soyeon would survive sitting in a place for more than hours while Wooyoung is not someone who can survive sitting in the same place for too long.
How I miss her.
Delightful gasps accompany them like he's the teacher bringing school children on a trip, intensifying even more as they enter the gates of Aurora Heights. Being a regular visitor to the neighbourhood allows him easier access, as the security guards already know his face and they have no problem in lifting the barrier for him. The security guards look like they want to acknowledge Danbi on the passenger seat thinking that she's Bae Soyeon, but finds something weird about her character.
Usually, whenever the latter goes out she would wear something that would almost cover up her whole face; sunglasses and mask, and she would barely look at them. But today, this person - whom they're still thinking of as Bae Soyeon - is smiling at them, waving as the car makes its way through the entrance.
Wooyoung sees this and immediately holds her hand before trying to subtly lower it down, signalling with his eyes to tell her that they are thinking that she's someone else, and her acting this way is making them suspicious.
Danbi slaps his hand away, and as Wooyoung drives his car into the neighbourhood, he profusely apologizes for making sudden skin contact. Mingi and Hongjoong are giving Wooyoung the daggers, but she brushes them off saying that he had apologized; she swears they could be so protective for someone who's not even related to her by blood. But whenever something scary happens they'd be the first ones to run to her, and she's left to protect both of them.
When Wooyoung's car, with the bodyguards trailing behind in their eye-striking yellow-coloured car, starts going around the huge compound, driving further into a path that looks kind of eerie, she looks at him from the corner of her eyes.
"Don't tell me you're about to murder us and dump our bodies inside the forest behind there," Danbi says frankly, to which Mingi widens his eyes in horror hearing how calm she's talking about it.
"Maybe I am," Wooyoung replies casually, to which now Hongjoong is the one widening his eyes, looking back and forth between the two upfront, not liking their blunt jokes.
It's like they've only met but they can already see right through each other's plain expressions. But if Wooyoung thinks that he can treat Danbi the way he treats Soyeon, boy is he wrong. This girl seems tougher, more resolute, the type of person that wouldn't take shit from anyone.
Wooyoung parks the car right at Soyeon's house garage, melancholic as he sees her car that's probably only used by Yeosang now that she's gone. It's not like she ever drove herself, because despite having a licence she's scared to hit the road. He just- he can't stop thinking about her, the possibilities, where she is right now. Not to mention, as he looks at Danbi who's now stepping out of the car still gaping at everything around her, to be with someone who looks like her, a person they didn't know existed until now.
Too many explanations to be done, but who has the answer anyway? He can't even make sure whether she did run away on her own, or it was a carefully staged kidnapping. But what's making him uneasy is that it has been too quiet; no demands for ransom, absolutely no clues to her whereabouts. And now they've run into someone who could be her twin. Should be? They look too alike there is no way they're not related.
Unless... he shakes his head to get rid of the ridiculous thoughts. Soyeon is not a good actor, is she? No, that would bring up more unanswered questions. If Soyeon is somehow acting as Danbi- that wouldn't explain how she'd willingly go back to her house she supposedly ran away from. It's just-
"Why are you staring at that car until as if you could burn a hole in it?" Mingi asks, his eyes wandering around as he silently gets impressed at the massive land.
"It's my girlfriend's," he sighs. "Seeing it here makes me wish that she's inside her house as always."
Mingi clamps his lips shut, not wanting to bring the topic into a much awkward atmosphere, because he wouldn't know what to answer. It's not like he has any experience in dealing with a girlfriend, let alone dealing with a missing girlfriend. So before he says something stupid that could potentially make them kicked out of the house before they're even able to step in, he better keep quiet.
"Sir Bae is waiting for you in his study area, I suppose," Jongho comes up next to Danbi. "He said he'd be waiting all day in there until you come. He's clearing up all his schedules, just in case it would take more to convince you to come here."
She gets surprised at how important they just made her sound, as if Bae Wonshik would sacrifice anything to bring her back. But then again, if she's so important to him, why is she the abandoned one while Bae Soyeon got to live in a mansion like this? What is her relation to Bae Soyeon anyway... separated twins at birth? Or possibly, just siblings who look too much alike.
Danbi looks around when she realizes that she has no idea how old Soyeon is, before she goes over to Yunho who's about to usher her inside Wonshik's house. Behind her, Mingi and Hongjoong are stuck together as they gaze at the huge houses connected by the bridge, unsure of the whole structure of the houses because they seem like an endless galaxy.
"I forgot to ask this..." she mutters towards Yunho who replies with a short hmm? "How old is Bae Soyeon?"
He doesn't even take a fraction of a second to answer. "22 this year. Birthday's on the 15th of July. I mean, if you think that's significant."
She's the same age as me. 15th of July? I don't even know when my actual birthday is. All I know is that someone abandoned me at the orphanage somewhere late July. So there is a possibility that she's my twin...
But the question comes to her again.
Why me? Why am I the one chosen to be abandoned?
She must have let the questions consume her until Yunho looks at her from the side, wondering why she's only stuck under the massive doorway. Her mind is totally not registering the peculiar designs in the house, because all that she can think repeatedly right now is: why me?
"Kim Danbi," the voice sounds concerned and she snaps out of it to find San looking as if he's trying to search for something on her face.
Her mind was too preoccupied that her feet had brought her, guided by the bodyguards, to a room that she and her housemates wouldn't even dream of having. The sunroom looks bright from the sun but the garden she sees with some gardeners trimming the plants, brings a sort of melancholic note to her.
She doesn't know what this feeling is. Overwhelmed? Resentment?
"Sorry," she quickly says before she takes a seat at one of the chairs, despite no one inviting her to. She feels dizzy, as if the painful past is brought out just right in front of her and compared with the life her supposed twin has gotten. "Everything is just too much to take in. It just feels so... different."
"Do you need something to drink, to calm yourself down?" San asks again, slightly lowering down his head so he can look at her better.
She hides her face from him, shaking her head. "No, it's just... I just need a moment."
But a moment is what she didn't get as the door opens and Bae Wonshik walks in, causing the bodyguards to immediately line themselves up on one side before doing a bow to him. He waves them away, saying that it's not necessary for them to act so tight. Only the three - Hongjoong, Mingi, Wooyoung - look like they don't know what to do as they awkwardly stand, taking in the view presented to them.
It's not a tearful reunion of a father separated with his daughter; it's more of a meeting full of doubts and questions.
When Danbi lifts her head up to be seen by Bae Wonshik, the first gasp is heard from the old man as he holds a hand to his chest, as if shocked to see her face. Just like the others' reactions, he's too speechless by the similarity the person in front of him has to the daughter he had claimed. He walks slowly to her, hand still on his chest before taking a place directly opposite her.
They look at each other and it takes all her will for her not to let any tears spill, because this was the person that she wished was her father. No- it's not that. She was only wishing to have someone to call as her father figure, and it just happened that Bae Wonshik's face had been plastered everywhere on media that she had started to weave something unrelated together.
And then, she was told that she looks like the daughter he has. What more does she need?
"You look... so much like my daughter," he says, still unsure of how he's supposed to act around her. Not to mention that he isn't close to his daughter before, so to act as a father to someone like her proves to be something harder than he had originally thought.
"Why was I the one left out?" she asks, a single tear dropping before she wipes it away angrily. "Why did you decide to take one and leave one out?"
"I didn't know," he refutes, trying to hold her stare, but he sees it in her eyes: pure anger. "I didn't know there were two of you-"
"What is that even supposed to mean?" she says, exasperated with her chest puffing up and down as her eyes produce more tears. "What did it take for you to pick one over the other, and make them both have different lives-"
"Bae Soyeon is not my biological daughter," he interjects, bringing the room to a still as they feel the rigidity of the situation.
Both Wooyoung and San automatically turn to look at Danbi who has her head down, defeated. She looks exhausted, like she just went on a rampage through the whole mansion but only with tears streaming down her face. Wooyoung's fist curls as he sees her crying, but he does nothing more before uncurling it, calming himself and reminding himself that she is not. Bae. Soyeon.
"Then..." she wipes off the tears again with her palms, "you're telling me that you only got one daughter, not knowing that another one exists. That... your other daughter got to live a life like this, while I was off to fend for myself because I was abandoned."
Mingi and Hongjoong's eyes drop to the floor when she says the word abandoned.
"I thought- I don't know. I thought I would be happy to have found someone I could call a father, but even then, I guess you're not related to me by blood at all. I don't know," she manages, "I don't even know what I want in life now. Even though you might not be a real father to my supposed twin, at least she had someone to call as one. While I was..." She doesn't have the heart to say it.
I was abandoned... twice.
Hongjoong advances towards her, trying to help her calm down. He kneels beside her, trying to take a good look at her face and he knows how hurt his little sister is. Despite the tough exterior she always puts on, when it comes to the word family she'll crumble. He hugs her and she cries into his shoulder, unable to hide herself anymore behind the facade she had built for as long as she can remember. He's the only person who has been with her ever since she knew the world, and he's the one who knows when she would need a shoulder to cry on.
"I'm sorry," is all he can say before turning to the bodyguards, as if asking for support. They try to avoid looking at what's in front and instead are directing to somewhere else, feeling like intruders during a personal moment. "I'm trying to make it up to you."
The bodyguards shift in their positions, knowing damn well that it's not the only thing Bae Wonshik is trying to get out of this. He needs a daughter; a daughter whom he can proudly show off. And this, an overwrought person who only wished she had someone to call her family, is the perfect opportunity for him.
"And how are you going to do that?" She lets go of Hongjoong.
"Come back home," his eyes glaze over, "here. So we can be a family."
