There was a certain girl who went to this school that this narrator is now attending.  Said girl was very unusual in the fact that she was there but never there.  She was there in presence, but nobody ever acknowledged her.  And the narrator thought this to be strange.  So the narrator decided to follow this girl and see why she was so and how she went through her day.

It surprised the narrator though, how fragile the girl was as they began to talk.  She went through her day avoiding eye contact and always staring at the floor.  When she smiled, she almost looked apologetic, yet her smile was so kind at the same time.  The narrator dubbed her for the moment as Crystal.

Crystal reminded the narrator of a glass candy covered in shiny pastel-colored foil.  The candy appears to be perfectly fine, but someone decided to use it as a test subject and dropped it from a ledge.  Outwardly, the candy was still fine, but on the inside, all that was left was the candy glass shards of the once perfectly formed sphere of sugar.  On the outside, Crystal appeared to be a cheerful, happy girl who was content.  She appeared happy to those who were older than her and younger, since she didn't want them to worry.  And when she didn't want others to worry, she activated her sixth sense of invisibility.  Nobody noticed her.  However, one of Crystal's closest friends noticed her true feelings and approached her about it.  And suddenly, the facade that had delicately held this girl together fell crashing apart as she started to cry.

And as Crystal continued her narration to the narrator, the narrator finally understood how this poor jaded girl was so misunderstood in the world.  All Crystal asked the narrator to tell the audience that reads this is:

Never judge a candy by its foil wrapping, because it may contain a broken candy glass heart.
