Chapter 1
Adrien, upon arriving home from New York, texted Kagami to say "Hey Kagami I have come home early did you want to hang out?"
"Sure, did you want to meet at Andre's and get an ice-cream or the park?"
Adrien thought about it and decided that the park was closer and he didn't want to share another ice-cream with Kagami.
"Park please, I am a little jet lagged but shouldn't sleep yet."
"See you there" Kagami wrote back.
Kagami was pleased that the first-person Adrien wanted to see was her, but she didn't know that New York had changed him.
Adrien, on his part, wondered why he was reluctant to see his girlfriend. There was nothing wrong about Kagami, she was beautiful, kind, caring and his father approved of her but somehow, she was just so ordinary... nothing made him want to protect her like he wanted to protect Marinette...
"Wait! What? Where did that thought come from? Marinette is just a friend... isn't she?"
He pondered that question as he headed to the park where Kagami was waiting for him.
"Adrien!" She called with a pleased to see you smile on her face.
"Hey Kagami!" He smiled back.
Kagami wrapped her arms around Adrien and reached up to kiss him, but Adrien found himself pulling back.
"Sorry Kagami, I don't feel like that," he said seeing her hurt expression flit across her face.
"It's ok, you said that you're tired," Kagami accepting his apology at face value, "So how was New York? Did you see Ladybug and Chat Noir?"
"It was interesting, I'd like to go again someday to see the friends we made there." He replied, in a disinterested voice, "I got to see Ladybug she was awesome as always." But he stayed silent about the troubles he went through with her.
Kagami started talking about what had happened while he was away, and she mentioned, "It was strange that the akuma just went away even though Ladybug and Chat Noir weren't here. It's like it realised this and gave up."
Adrien zoned out as he started thinking about his trip to New York.
He admired the way that Marinette went to his father and had convinced him to let Adrien go, despite her tendency to mix her words up, she still got up and went into battle against his father - the one person that everyone else seemed to katow to.
Adrien thought about the flight over and how Marinette had requested to change seats after she fell on top of him Why did my body react to her when I do not feel anything when Kagami hugs and kisses me? Why can't I feel like this with Kagami? She is my girlfriend after all, shouldn't I be feeling something towards her? Oh, I better smile. He smiled then, at Kagami, and nodded as if he was listening and went back to his troubled thoughts.
All Adrien could think about is Marinette and how amazing she was, he remembered her smile and frown, her smell and feel. He found himself wishing for that dance in the air again... why does the magical stuff always happen with Marinette... why does she affect me when my girlfriend doesn't? He wondered before glancing at his girlfriend and finding her looking at him expectantly.
"Ah sorry, " he apologised "I zoned out."
Kagami smiled sweetly and said "That's ok, I just asked if you wanted to go see how the repairs of Paris was going?"
Adrien found himself shaking his head, in denial of her request, "Sorry Kagami, I don't." He paused and decided that he didn't want to hurt Kagami more than he was already going to "Kagami. I don't know how to tell you this without hurting you, but I can't be your boyfriend anymore. New York made me realise that I honestly just see you as a friend. "
He looked at Kagami concerned about her reaction to his news, what he saw surprised him. Kagami, did not appear upset at all, but was behaving as if she had been expecting this news along.
"It's Marinette, isn't it?" Kagami asked, matter of factly, as if it was a forgone conclusion, "You like Marinette?"
"I don't know what I feel about Marinette," Adrien admitted, "But I can't seem to stop thinking about her and Ladybug. But I came to the conclusion, if I truly loved you, I should have been thinking about you, not her."
Kagami looked sad at his declaration, "I understand... I'll go now. I hope that we can still be friends." She stood on her toes and kissed his cheek goodbye, "Goodbye Adrien," she said sadly, feeling her heart break and reform in her chest.
"Ahh... yes... me too." Adrien spluttered out, as she turned to leave. Adrien sat down on the bench near where they had been chatting and watched Kagami walk away crying. He would have gone with her if he thought it would have done any good, but he knew that if he had been given such news as he was just given, he would want to be left alone.
Luka at that point was riding by with pizza's on the back of his bike when he saw Kagami crying and Adrien spaced out on the bench. He thought I wonder what happened? but shrugged... It really isn't my problem. I only know of Kagami because of Marinette, besides which I have a delivery to make now. Perhaps if I see her later I can ask.
Luka wondered I wonder how Marinette and my sister are going? I have not heard from either of them since I rode Marinette to catch the schools tour bus. I really miss Marinette, her smile and stutters, he smiled at this thought and changed track I wish Marinette would start loving me the way she loves Adrien. If I am there for her, maybe she will. I can't force her to love me though, I have to be patient. Julika his annoying sister made him see that. Marinette is worth waiting for even though she is broken by her unrequited love, she still gives me her love and time. I have to believe that this will happen. I have to believe one day my love will be returned. But if it doesn't I will have to let her go, no matter the cost to me.
A few days later the rest of Adrien's class returned from New York. Adrien and Luka, along with a few parents, waited at the school to greet them.
When Marinette got off the bus and spotted both Adrien and Luka waiting. She stood awkwardly for a while as she didn't know who to greet first, her heart torn in two as she deliberated. She knew that she should go to Luka first, since he was her boyfriend, but she desperately wanted to greet Adrien. Luka, seeing and understanding her dilemma, solved the problem for her by walking over and giving her a hug. "Welcome home Marinette" he said holding her in a warm loving hug. Marinette relieved of the choice, relaxed into his hug.
"Thanks Luka, it's good to see you again... oh! I have a gift for you!" she suddenly remembered, stepping back to dig his gift out of her carry bag, losing several of her items in doing so. Luka just smiled at her frazzled state, bending down to pick up the fallen items and handing them to her in exchange for his present.
"Hey dude!" Nino greeted Adrien grinning at him as they fist bumped.
"Hey Nino, welcome back home" Adrien replied distractedly as he looked at Marinette and Luka hugging. Why am I jealous of Luka and Marinette hugging? Marinette isnt mine. She's just a friend isn't she? he thought trying to convince himself of his feelings towards Marinette.
Nino noticing that Adrien was not paying attention to him, turned to look for what was getting his attention with a funny expression, almost like Adrien was jealous.
"Adrien, could you possibly be jealous?" Nino asked, curious to know how Adrien would respond. Alya had come over to Adrien with Nino and was standing a bit like a third wheel, holding her pillow.
"You look it," Alya commented as she pushed her glasses up her nose.
"I don't know!" Said Adrien feeling exasperated by the comments by the pair, "I've never felt like this before."
"Ah, my clueless man," Nino went on putting his arm around Adrien's shoulders, looking at Marinette and Luka as he did so, "Then you're definitely jealous. The question is what will you do about it?"
"Nothing!" replied Adrien, "There's nothing I can do. "
"You're at idiot!" expounded Alya, "I can't believe you!" And she stalked off, leaving the boys, to talk with Marinette.
"Hey girl!" Alya interjected herself into Marinette and Luka's sweet reunion. "I'm gonna go home now. I'll see you tomorrow, yeah?"
"Ah, sure, see you tomorrow Alya!" Marinette looks at Luka, "I'm kind of beat Luka, I think that I will head home too." She looked at the rest of the class, cheerfully saying goodbye in her own way, "See you Monday guys!"
"See you Marinette!" Those that heard her replied. Although Chloe heard her, she ignored her as she felt Marinette was not worth her time.
"I'll walk you home," Luka offered, and despite how close her home was to the school, he took her bag, with the intent of carrying it.
"Thanks," blushed Marinette at Luka's kindness. She glanced at Adrien then and smiled. Adrien smiled painfully back, "Bye Adrien and Nino!" she said unnecessarily, as if they were different from the rest of the class.
"Bye Marinette!"
"Bye Dudette!"
Adrian watched her leave, a little sadly, with Luka. What else can I do? I am not her boyfriend."
"Whose fault is that?" Nino asked him with a raised eyebrow.
It was then Adrien realised that he had muttered his thoughts out loud.
"What?" He questioned Nino, a little harshly.
"Never mind Dude, you will get it one day, hopefully not too late though!" Nino brushed off his prickly question.
Adrien looked at his friend then as Marinette and Luka had turned the corner "What are you saying Nino?"
"You're truly clueless dude," Nino replied, not answering him at all, instead suggesting, "You going to walk me home and hang out for a bit?"
Adrien nodded in response, and the boys left.
When Marinette arrived home at the bakery, she said in her sweet way, "Thanks for walking me home Luka!" and kissed him like the proper girlfriend she was. Luka, accepting her gift, wrapped his arms around her and returned her gentle kiss.
"You're welcome Marinette, I am happy to help you! I am always happy to help you!" he replied, and released her from their embrace so she could go inside. "Take care Marinette!" He said with a gentle warm smile.
"Thanks Luka!" Marinette said cheerfully ,"You too!" As she entered her home with her suitcases, to go to her room.
Upon reaching her room, she collapsed onto her bed thinking over New York and what happened there. "Perhaps my kitty isn't so silly after all," she murmured, "Perhaps I should give him a chance." Wondering why she was even considering it when she had an awesome boyfriend already. "But Ladybug doesn't " she reasoned "Why can't Ladybug go out with Chat noir?"
"That's a dangerous line of thought Marinette" Tikki scolded her.
"I know! Tikki, I know!" Yelled Marinette in frustration stuffing her pillow on her face.
She did not remain like this for long as she got up and deciding to patrol the city to burn off her stray thoughts.
"TIKKI Spots On!" she cried and Ladybug left to patrol the city.
