I am Fading Away by Summer Cheng@SummerCheng37

Description:

One day, Marinette woke up to notice something was off.  She could feel her feet. She looked in the mirror and realized she was fading. How could this happen to her?  What had she done? How had the experiment gone wrong?

www.dictionary.com describes fading as to fade away, to vanish gradually

Marinette's POV:

Last night, I worked on a special project for science class. Today, I woke up to discover I was fading. What on earth went wrong with the experiment?  "Agh, what am I going to do?"  She started to freak out.

My parents were dead because they were attacked by some bad people years ago when I was a small child so I grew up with my grandparents and older sister. The older sister had moved out years ago. It has something to do with it being lame as the hills to live with old people and a younger buzz kill sister. At least, that was the excuse her sister had given the day she moved out.

I felt it was probably because she hated the rules given to them.

My sister never was good about being home by midnight. Let alone about parties, boys, or life in general. I on the other hand was good at almost everything. I was not good with boys as none noticed me. I did not care because I had  Alya, Nino, and Adrien. That was good enough for me.

"How could this happen? The experiment was supposed to help me to glow in the dark not make me invisible!" I yelled. Not that it made the experience any less freaked than it was already.

I hoped this was permanent because then I would lose everything, my friends, my home, and everything else. It was bad enough that I lost my sister. I know she is dead because my grandparents whisper about her when they think I am not listening. I also am sure of it because I saw the news it showed the place where she said she was staying being robbed and my sister did not make it out.

It seemed like a lost cause, but I knew I had to find a way to reverse the effects. However, I wasn't very good at science. It was one of the few things Bridgette was good at, not me.

I heard my phone indicate I had a text message.  I picked up only to discover my ears felt different somehow. No, I gasped as my left ear faded away into nothingness.

"Adrien, help me! My experiment went wrong!" I texted him back.

"Wrong, in what way?" Adrien texted.

"I am fading away," I texted him.

"Hold on, I will be right over," Adrien texted.

True to his word he arrived within minutes, but by then my arms and hands were gone. I was nothing but a torso area and a face with no ears, or nose.  I felt so awkward because how was I to answer the door?

Adrien kicked the door in and gasped when he saw me. "So, it is not a joke, then?" He asked.

"No, it is serious, you have to help me before I fade away completely, Adrien, "I pleaded with him.

"Oh, my goodness, girl, what happened to you?" Alya inquired. "Girl, you are barely there," Nino pointed out the obvious.

"Guys, we have to help her," Adrien said. I nodded my head.

"Okay, what should we do?" I instructed them on where to find the formula I used and the ingredients needed for it. I emphasized that they had less than 6 hours to complete it before I disappeared the rest of the way.

"We better hurry, because I can't lose you, Marinette," Adrien said.

Alya smirked. Nino did the same.  I had no idea why they reacted this way to Adrien's words.

"Girl, Adrien likes you," Alya bragged. "yeah, dudette he has the hots for you," Nino said.

"What? "I asked. "Marinette, I..."  Adrien remarked and put a hand on my right cheek.  I looked at Adrien and saw tears in his eyes. I wasn't sure what that meant, but I was determined more than ever not to leave now that I knew he needed me. "It is okay,  I will be fine," I answered.

"No, I can't lose you. Marinette, you have to come back. I  can't ..." Adrien said. I heard the seriousness in his voice. I knew in that moment that perhaps, I was wrong about him. Maybe he saw me as more than a friend. I never knew. How could I have been so blind?

Adrien let go of my cheek and I missed the closeness. I sighed.

He started to work on helping Alya and Nino. Alya read the ingredients and the order of them. Nino read the formula and shook his head. He flipped the thing around. "It was upside down," Nino said. "you mean?" Alya asked. "Yes, I mean, we have to start over now so that the rest of us don't start to disappear too," Nino explained. "Oh, no!" Adrien exclaimed.

My eyebrows went then my eyelashes and forehead.  "Alya, and Nino, we have to hurry, more of Marinette is gone!" He said in agony.

The others worked.   When they finished all of me was gone, other than my eyes and lips the rest I could not find them anywhere.  Adrien grabbed the formula and tossed it into the air where I was standing. Soon, I reappeared. My body was back intact and I was glowing.

"Marinette, you are glowing," Adrien said.  He pulled me close and hugged me.

Alya grabbed Nino's hand, "Come on let's give them some space, Nino." They left.

I was unsure what to say now that Adrien and I were alone. "I am glowing, what do you mean?" I asked. "You are glowing with this pattern of colors, green and pink," Adrien said.

"Ah, so the experiment does work then, cool," I said. "Cool, nothing. I almost lost the girl I love because she got the instructions wrong since the page was upside down," Adrien frowned. "What? The girl you love? Wait, you love me?" I looked at him in surprise. "Yes, everyone knows but you. I never meant for it to happen and I understand if..." He remarked. I smiled and kissed him. I had to stand on my tiptoes because I am an entire foot shorter than him, but it was worth it.

Adrien's response to my kiss shocked me. I was amazed to realize that he had feelings for me all along, despite my obliviousness. My near disappearance made me acutely aware of my fear of losing him, and I finally understood his pain when I almost faded away completely.

"Marinette, does this mean what I hope it does?" Adrien asked. "If you mean, does it mean, I love you then, yes, Adrien, I love you too," I said.

Adrien took some photos of me to prove the experiment works. Then, he held my hand. "Marinette, will you be my date for the dance?" Adrien asked. "Yes, I will,"  I said. "Awe, good cause I would not want to go with anyone else," He said.

The two of us were so tardy for school that we got detention. Not that it matters because we are together now. The teacher turned off the lights because my glowing made it too bright in the room, but I did not mind. It was then the others realized I could glow in the dark too.

The science teacher was in charge of detention. He gave me an A+ on the experiment.

Once detention, let out Adrien walked me home.  He noticed the glowing stopped, but the strange thing was now I had some pink and green highlights. It was weird how the side effects worked. Well, it sure bet fading away, though.

  Until the next,

Miraculous one-shot,

bye-bye,

little owlets!

Summer out!
