Born leader (Emma x Nathan) one-shot by Summer Cheng (@SummerCheng37)
Description: Emma Agreste was born to be a leader. At age eighteen, she joins the army and catches right on. A year later, she is badly injured when a stray grenade lands on the roof of her tent. Does she make it?
Nathan's POV:
I am a doctor.
I am used to all kinds of craziness in my job.
I hear a blast. I check for injured.
I see a young lady passed out and carry her back to the emergency room.
After the operation to save her life, I found a photo that had fallen out of her pocket.
I pick it up.
I notice a message on the back.
It reads, "Emma, we are proud of you."
I notice it is signed, "Love, Mom, and Dad, your sisters, and brothers."
It turns out she is a single Lieutenant.
"Agreste, wait, she is the girl from my twelfth-grade history class."
I smile as I reflect on the past and think if only the others could see me now.
Later, I check in on her, but she is not awake.
Hmm, it must be the trauma.
I sure hope she wakes up soon.
"Hang in there, Emma Agreste."
I say this every time.
I come by daily to see if there is any change.
Two months go by and still no changes.
Ah, I started to panic when a nurse suggested we contact her parents and her sisters and brothers.
"Not, yet!" I insist.
Everyone else looks at me like I have thistles poking out of my eyes or something.
"It is just I think she might wake up soon. I saw her grip the side of the bed with her left hand."
I made this up but as long as no one else knew, what trouble could it cause?
The next day, I returned to the room and saw someone about to throw a sheet over her.
"Stop!" I protest.
The other doctors and nurses insist I calm down. They claim I have gotten too close to the patient and need to accept the fact she did not make it.
I shake my head. I refuse to believe it.
I know she has a good fight left in there. I am sure of it.
I watch in amazement as the head nurse throws a sheet over her.
Then, to make it amusing, I see the sheet fall to the ground as Emma sits up, stretches her arms, and says, "Uh, could I get some water here? I am a bit thirsty."
I stick my tongue out at the others. I retrieve the water and hand her a glass full of it.
"Thanks, Doctor Nathan."
"Wait, I know you, you are Nathan, as in history, Mr. Andrews's class?"
I see the recognition in her eyes.
"Yes, that is the one."
"Well, look at you, a doctor."
I could tell she seemed surprised, yet appeared to be proud.
I felt her hug me and hug her back.
The head nurse blurts, "No one bothers them, got me? I ship them."
I blush. Since when has anyone begun to ship me with Emma?
I start to walk away. "Glad, to see you are better."
"Ah, yes, it took some rude person nearly smothering me."
I roll my eyes in embarrassment at the statement.
"I am sure it was not you."
"I know he is right after all he saved your life."
"Wow, thanks, hero. I always knew you had it in you."
"I always figured you were born a leader."
"Me leader, but I am only a lieutenant."
I walk off to check on the other patients.
I couldn't help but feel the stares from the nurses and other doctors.
Goodness, it wasn't the first time I helped save a life.
Why should today be any different?
the end...
bye, bye, little owlets!
Summer out!
